Orzhov Midrange **1st place FNM**

Standard* Control FNM Midrange WB (Orzhov)

Sideboard

This deck dominates the monoblack devotion matchup by playing fewer 'dead' removal spells vs black (doom blade, ultimate price) and more tempo-generating or resilient threats such as Blood Baron of Vizkopa. This deck was designed to prey on a meta saturated with its own kind.

As a B/W midrange-control deck, we'll be focusing on emptying out any of a handful of hard-to-beat threats onto a board shaped by removal and Thoughtseizes. I'm attempting to shore up what I see as monoblack devotion's biggest weaknesses: Lack of sweeper-proof creatures and lack of enchantment removal.

Obzedat dodges Detention Spheres and Supreme Verdicts, Blood Baron is excellent in the mirror and against aggro but mediocre (at best!) against green, especially given Nissa, Worldwaker's ability to spawn hordes of 4/4s, Polukranos, World Eater's fat stats, etc. There's a lot that beats it - which is why I have elected to go down to two. Elspeth is a wonderful, wonderful card; stonewalling Desecration Demons, Assemble the Legion, wiping opposing blood barons, etc. I wish I had a second.

The removal suite is standard, attempting to be diverse and cost effective. The draw suite is Read the Bones; dodging Banishing Light in the mirror when Underworld Connections would get removed.

Updates Add

Haven't played any magic in the last year, but the deck hasn't changed at all.

Game 1- Mirror match. I won the first game, lost the second, won the third; big players were Lifebane Zombie (He was running Brimaz instead, and Lifebane just plucked them right out of his hand).

Game 2- Monoblue devotion. 2-1.

Game 3- Rabble red. Removed his creatures, sided in Drown in sorrow. Lost game two to fast damage. Blood Baron saved me from Stoke the Flames the turn it would have killed me, and he couldn't recover.

Game 4- Jund superfriends. We drew; played a match for fun which I won by drawing the right removal at the right times (Devour flesh on Caryatid, Read the Bones dug up a Bile Blight to kill two Elvish Mystics just in time, etc).
