+1. This is an awesome deck and I plan on running a similar decklist. I play tested it vs. Rakdos Willy and Gruuling Battle, without sideboarding at all.

I found that it's slowed by the Godless Shrine's and Orzhov Guildgate's. I might swap one of those for some Plains, just so you have access to that mana immediately. Also, I kept having trouble deciding what to creature type to pick with the Cavern of Souls. This messed with the early game.

I might consider Executioner's Swing instead of or in addition to Dead Weight. Once the greenie's got big, it was game over.

Great list and write up. I look forward to your response.

Hiya dday80!

Thanks for the detailed review. Now in regards to what you've found in this deck...

I can understand how it's slowed down by the Orzhov Guildgate. Coming into play tapped is a big deal in an aggro deck. Though, I don't understand your criticism of Godless Shrine making it slow.Unless it's really late game, I'll always be slapping it down and taking the two life.

The issue with replacing them with Plains comes down to whether I want to drop Geralf's Messenger on T3 or T4. A Plains can't pay for his tri-black bost, sadly. Replacing them with Swamps would be much

Cavern of Souls is an interesting one. I will usually pick Zombie to get Geralf's Messenger out faster, but it's circumstantial. If I have Cartel Aristocrat, Cavern of Souls and a butt load of swamps in hand, I'll name Advisor so I can use it to pay for both Cartel Aristocrat and an Obzedat, Ghost Council later on.

Dead Weight is in the list as it is possibly the only 1-drop removal I have access to, and it is more reliable than Tragic Slip.

Dead Weight is an awesome card against Boros and other stuff at the moment. It's so so effective. I really like this decklist a lot - it's great. Seems to have a lot of sac'ing synergy and enough zombies to keep it going. You are going to get really screwed by board clear though. I'm not sure what you can do about it, given your colours. It's a solid deck though definitely.

Hey Bnyan,

Now that you explain everything your choices make sense. I was playing Godless Shrine conservatively. I'm going to keep play testing with your direction. Again, great job!

+1! Really dope deck man, I've always wanted to make an Orzhov deck while sacrificing creatures so I'm definitely using this as a reference.

Also, not deck related but 'wonder' was misspelled in the first sentence of the Thrull Parasite section in the description.

I ran mono black sacrifice shenanigans with Gravecrawler, Bloodthrone Vampire, and Blood Artist. Fun times. This list seems even better with the white splash.

Have you considered Mutilate? I used to have great fun with that card. It's a surprisingly effective board wipe that can take out Geist of Saint Traft. And even better, if you have a Blood Artist in play, or, better yet, TWO Blood Artists in play, it's game over.

It's just such a fun an awesome feeling to throw down a mutilate, all the creatures die, your opponent dies, everything dies except you. It has a very black mana feel to it.

I see two on the side so I guess you have considered it. Just a suggestion that might be worth maindecking 4x and build-around.

So many comments since I last logged in. Thanks guys!

ChiefBell

In regards to your mention about board wipes against this deck, I usually find it isn't much of a problem. If they attempt to Supreme Verdict, and I have at least one Blood Artist out and four other guys (Which is a very common occurrence), they stand to lose 5 life and I gain 5 life. The same player should pray to Avacyn should I have another Blood Artist on the board.

The only real boardwipes I'm fearful of are Merciless Eviction (Which no one really plays), Planar Cleansing (Once again, no one really plays this), Worldfire (Less played than the prior two), and Terminus. I'm yet to find a reasonable counter to Terminus as of yet.

Rekanize

Hah! Thanks for pointing that out! It's fixed now.

Spazik008

In regards to the Mutilate suggestion, I have very much considered it's use. Though, if only for the purposes of activating Blood Artist, I find I'm better off with the creatures. I usually wait for my opponent to wrath the board, anyway. They always come out worse :b

Yeh, I was more referencing Terminus and Merciless Eviction given the Blood Artist situation. I don't think there's any way to counter these in Black or White. Planar Cleansing and Terminus are extremely common wipes in Esper Control decks, but then again so is Supreme Verdict (which actually works in your favour because of Blood Artist).

It's certainly a situation you have a fairly strong answer to but not a solid deterrent. You can say that in the majority of cases you will gain about 4 life and they will lose 4 from a T4 board wipe (T4 is the desired turn for a board wipe). However this could go up to 6-8 if you have 2 Blood Artist down. I think this puts you in a strong situation, for sure but perhaps not one that is definitive. It's like saying, 'if you do play a board wipe, you're going to take A LOT of damage, but you may still win the game'. I would go so far as to say that Esper Control may be a threat for this deck. However I feel like you should have favorable matchups against most things. It's a very strong deck.

I recommend [Mikaeus, the Unhallowed]. I would mesh really well with your sacking and Thrull Parasite.

  • 1 on the deck idea!

Understandably Bloodthrone Vampire is cheaper by one, but would you consider Bloodflow Connoisseur as a replacement? Only because counters stay for later turns, providing a larger threat and still allowing you to have the beatstick the next turn and mana to play something else

Your description is very well written. However it mentions using cards that are no longer in your deck.

dream_cast says... #16

Your Cartel Aristocrat has fantastic synergy with Mutilate too, allowing you protection from Black so that you you have guaranteed follow up damage after the board wipe.

March 11, 2013 12:54 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #17

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that protection protects against targeting from that colour and damage (among other things). Given that Mutilate is non-targeted (because it affects the whole board) and doesn't do damage (-1 counters are not damage) then protection would not stop your creature from dying to it.

March 11, 2013 1:22 p.m.

Jay says... #18

You are correct, Mutilate would still kill the Cartel Aristocrat if it had protection, for the very reason you stated.

Great deck +1. Any thought to putting a Sorin, Lord of Innistrad in the sideboard? The vampire tokens are good sac fodder and a creature heavy deck makes good use of +1/0 emblems.

Hi, very nice deck. With regards to Cavern of Souls (unless somewhere mistaken), you'd not be able to get an Obzedat and Cartel Aristocrat out of the same Cavern. This due to them being Spirit and Human creatures respectively. Should I be wrong...apologies in advance.

Happy gaming!

Percy says... #21

Ooh, I may be wrong: 205.3m Creatures and tribals share their lists of subtypes; these subtypes are called creature types. The creature types are Advisor, Ally, Angel, etc etc

Nope, he's definitely wrong. If you name human you can cast human knights and human soldiers. You can name Advisor and get alllll the advisors in the world.
