The game plan is similar to his deck, just with less emphasis on pulling of the perfect combo. Optimally Wall of Blood turn 3, Dying Wish + Sac (Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim/Village Rites/Bone Splinters/Killing Wave), or Essence Harvest on turn 4. Bone Talisman turn 2, Wall of Blood turn 3, Bone Talisman ability to get Essence Harvest + play Essence Harvest turn 4 is another option.
I cut Rite of Consumption for the fear of it being countered. After that I would essentially lose the game. After realizing that sacrificing a creature is also in the cost though, it might make more sense. The main game plan is Dying Wish + sac, and Ayli/Village Rites/Bone Shards are 1 mana.
This is a budget deck, so I can't have the mana base I would like. I would like to splash Green or Blue for search/draw, as Wall of Blood needs to be hard drawn to play on turn 3. If there are other options/cheap ways I can get this sort of search I would like to know.
Desecration Demon, Drana's Emissary, and Athreos, God of Passage are all to add additional threats to keep my opponent from simply counter-spelling my Wall of Blood and winning the game. Dying Wish can be played on Desecration Demon, as well as Essence Harvest getting some value from him and devoted Athreos. Athreos + Killing Wave feels very good, and even though it rarely will happen it's fun and I like it. Any cards that can synergize with Dying Wish/Ayli/Essence Harvest would work here. I feel like these are middling options.
In the sideboard, it's mostly removal. Tribute to Hunger and Killing Wave are non-targeting, and Fracture/Path to Exile can be swapped for Killing Wave/Bone Splinters. Kambal, Consul of Allocation is a nice idea, but I haven't been able to play with it, so I don't know how good it is. Batwing Brume was in the original list as a stall card, but again, I don't know how strong that would be to side in. Any of these cards can be swapped for Desecration Demon/Drana's Emissary/Athreos, God of Passage if they are not getting value.
