+1 for the flavor, Tibalt, and the layset of Demigod of Revenge

@frusciante7 Thanks for the upvote! Also the flavor is good, but I was sad that more madness cards weren't viable. A mono-red version I tried ran a lot of madness, but it was far too slow

I had a crazy mono R deck with Tibalt aswell but it wasn't modern legal. Insert Punishing Fire and Recoup and it gets nuts.

For modern tho, you could add Increasing Vengeance :-)

Sadly, Increasing Vengeance increases the mana requirements too much to justify the additional Lightning Bolts it would throw.

Punishing Fire would do some serious work though. It's for the best it isn't Modern legal

Flame Jab and Raven's Crime could do some work if you're looking for a more controlling build. I'd also consider splashing blue for Snapcaster Mage and Desperate Ravings

@hannibal6 I've considered Flame Jab and Raven's Crime, but I don't have Life from the Loam. That reduces their usefulness by a lot.

Splashing blue would be an option, but that would mean we could just run the traditional Grixis Control package instead and be more effective. The good mana and mostly painless manabase is why I decided to stick to Rakdos instead of Grixis.

I do like the option of running one or two additional shocks for the flashback of Desperate Ravings though. It might be best to cut a copy of Tibalt, both Kolaghan's Commands, and both Darkblasts for three Desperate Ravings and two more Fiery Temper, then cut a Wooded Foothills and a Swamp for a Steam Vents and a Watery Grave. It would negatively effect our aggro matchups, but improve against combo, midrange, and control. I think I would have to wait and see how the meta changes before committing to this change.

You made Tibalt good, thank you kind sir. +1!

@Bluesky22 Tibalt was always good, he just needed the right deck to show off his skills. And thanks for the +1!

Browbeat would clean up in here

lemmingllama says... #10

@Bababad Browbeat is a good card. However, the direct damage isn't always what we want. I'll do some testing, but Kolaghan's Command will likely pull more weight

Bababad says... #11

Kolaghan's Command all the way if not just for the recursion of Demigod when you really need it.

just a silly side option

@Bababad I appreciate the thoughts, helps me consider new possibilities. Sadly not all cards are ideal.

Dammit, i've been trying to break this guy for a while now.. And you figured it out +1. I almost wanna say splash white for Unburial Rites. I think you should do some more experimenting!

lemmingllama says... #14

@C4rnif3X This is certainly not a final list, I plan on tweaking it and running different builds. Unburial Rites would be a great reason to splash white. If you do brew a list, please link me to it!

Torpor Orb over dragon claw in sideboard?

help shut down a few decks (predominantly the BX Eldrazi nonsense...fairies...etc.)

February 1, 2016 11:55 a.m.

lemmingllama says... #16

@Bababad Torpor Orb is sweet, although it does nothing to Eldrazi since they all have on cast triggers. Still, i'll probably slot one into the sideboard, likely over a Shattering Spree

Darn, you are right.

Haven't come toe to toe against the new eldrazi variants in person.

Ya man.. I've been brewing with the new Oath cards. I've been trying to brew a build revolving around Oath of Nissa, and had Tibalt in the brew.. But I gave up on that idea. I'd want a brew where I didn't care what I discard in my hand, that's what i've been trying to figure out. On the flip side though, it sucks wanting to discard something and not being able to haha. That's why you run the looting. I think you should definitely try to dabble in the white for a little bit.. The options are just to good. Sun Titan & Unburial Rites. The Titan can bring him back which is sick..

I just wish Tibalt had more of an effect on the board state faster.. There has to be way!

lemmingllama says... #19

@C4rnif3X It could be interesting to do a Tibalt and Life from the Loam variant that runs Oath of Nissa. Then win with Bloodghasts and lots of manlands/Ghost Quarter.

As for Sun Titan, my current list has basically no good targets for it. I may try a brew once I am not stuck on mobile and see what I can come up with.

As for Tibalt being slow, he is. However, he makes you win the topdeck wars with his plus and board stalls with his ult. I side out Tibs against all aggressive matchups for the extra removal

I've been trying to build a red deck wins build with Seething Song, Geosurge, Chandra, Flamecaller, and our friend Tibalt. Still clunky, but can get Chandra out on turn 4 sometimes. Just some more options to explore. Also, I know Fiery Temper has synergy with the discard.. But maybe Volt Charge is an option you can play with, a way to build up Tibalt faster.

lemmingllama says... #23

@C4rnif3X I really wish Seething Song wasn't banned in Modern, so many things could be done in red. Although it's best that Storm isn't so powerful. Geosurge is interesting, but can't cast Chandra, Flamecaller either...

Volt Charge would be good if I intended to use Tibalt's minus abilities more often. However, frequently he is just a way to improve our topdecks late game or fill the graveyard for delve/Bloodghast/Demigod of Revenge shenanigans. In all the games I've played with him, I've never used his -4, since we have enough maindeck discard that it is utterly irrelevant. I have won a game off of his -6, but Tibalt had 8 counters on him at the time since he had been giving me value all game.

Thanks for the suggestions though! They are certainly appreciated!

C4rnif3X says... #24

Oh is Seething Song banned? Didn't know that haha.. Don't play red regularly. I knew Rite of Flame was. Seething Song was how I was getting Chandra out turn 4. There goes that plan lmao. As for Geosurge I was using it for Balefire Dragon. But in this deck you could get out a Demigod of Revenge turn 4, that be sweet.

February 3, 2016 9:01 a.m. Edited.

lemmingllama says... #25

@C4rnif3X It is, Storm was getting degenerate in 2013 so they banned it. Epic Experiment and Seething Song were way too good together.

Also currently I don't have too much difficulty getting to five mana. With six discard spells and six Bolts, I can normally curve into the lategame without too much difficulty. Also if I did want to cast turn 4 Demigods, I would probably just use Desperate Ritual to ease the red mana requirements.

Also Balefire Dragon seems really good on turn 4. You just win if they can't answer it
