Btw, I really like the deck idea and I just want to throw in my 2 cents to see if I can help it out.

Flagstones of Troakir I playtested with, and it works to fetch shocklands, and if in a pinch, at end of opponents turn, you can Ghost Quarter it to thin out the deck and maybe even provide a mana color fix.

It would make me too susceptible to Blood Moon kamahll. But I'm glad you like the deck!

Am I going to far to suggest putting in Jeskai Ascendancy? You already have means of red mana (Mana Confluence, Mox Opal) and it has really nice synergy with Paradise Mantle...

I kind of feel like Mox Opal isn't really necessary. While you will likely get metal-craft at some point in the game, you don't have the same splooge your hand out turn one openings that affinity has that makes it powerful.

Sure it'll likely act as mana-ramp at some-point in the game but it seems like another low drop equipment would be better in the slot...

like say >.> Golem-Skin Gauntlets

I'm rarely ever racking on equipments on to one creature Worldferno. The problem with Golem-Skin Gauntlets is that it requires me to have Puresteel Paladin on the field and either an Accorder's Shield, Kitesail Apprentice or a Sigil of Distinction for 2+. It is just generally inconsistent on many a level. Finally, I'm not usually dumping all my affinity stuff turn 1. Generally they come down turns 2/3/4, depending on the deck I'm facing. They can come down turn 1, and I've won no land games thanks to Mox Opal and Paradise Mantle before, but to come down turn one I generally either have to have no lands or have to have just one Myth Realized in hand with nothing else in hand.

You aren't out of place FAMOUSWATERMELON. If you actually check the budget version and some of the updates you'll see that it is there. I've tried it before and it is really fun, but being 3 cmc means it is slow and competes with Monastery Mentor, and really only works in storm.

Magic45 says... #8

how is this actually doing at FNM? vs what decks?

April 26, 2015 10:18 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #9

I don't actually have the time nor the money to play this deck in real Magic45. Another part of it is actually because I'm trans, and I refuse to go out to events without making sure I look like a female. This means that it takes a long time to get ready and a Modern Night Magic just isn't something I'm willing to spend 2-4 hours to get ready for, not too mention the hour long bus ride to get there.

However, that isn't to say that I'm not ignorant on various match-ups. This deck is best against control. In other words, it doesn't do very well in this meta of midrange and aggro and creature oriented decks. That also depends on how well you play this deck, as knowing the various intricacies of the deck and what to get on the field against a control player is important.

I'll be writing up a primer on the three different styles of how one can build a Puresteel Paladin deck, partly in due to gain some recognition as one of the founders of this archetype in the competitive scene since I've been working on it for about 2-3 years now. The three different styles are Voltron with Geist of Saint Traft, Armament Master or Kemba, Kha Regent; Tempo with Monastery Mentor and Myth Realized; and Storm with Jeskai Ascendancy, Puresight Merrow and Grapeshot. Please keep in mind that these styles are not exclusive, and you can fuse them together for resiliency at the cost of consistency.

Jeskai Ascendancy storm with Puresteel Paladin AND Puresight Merrow?? That's... ambitious, to say the least.

April 26, 2015 10:55 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #11

No no, It's Puresteel Paladin and Puresight Merrow storm with Jeskai Ascendancy added as a 2 of for consistency. You are never attacking with that deck. You can, but you don't need to and can just cast Grapeshot as you can tutor for whatever you want for a permanent chain.

April 26, 2015 10:59 p.m.

That's still pretty awesome sounding! Mind linking me to the primer once you're done with it?

April 26, 2015 11:07 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #13

Sure. Also, the description has a budget list that goes storm if you wish to check it out.

April 26, 2015 11:38 p.m.

Yeah, already took a look at that one. It looks fun, but sort of, I don't know, fragile.

April 26, 2015 11:45 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #15

That's cause it's storm :D

April 26, 2015 11:46 p.m.

True, but traditional storm always works out reaaaaaaally smoothly (at least for me) because of all the copying. Even the Jeskai Ascendancy list I run fizzles only 10% of the time. I might be missing something huge, but I don't see any way of untapping/producing mana besides Paradise Mantle which you can only use once per creature and Jeskai Ascendancy, which combines with it, but it's only a two-of and impossible to tutor for. I feel like some enchantement tutoring would actually work quite nicely because of their importance... That said, I have trouble playing either of the lists, so I really shouldn't be talking :)

April 26, 2015 11:53 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #17

Paradise Mantle + Puresight Merrow = infinite combo. With just one Puresteel Paladin on the field you can be guaranteed a storm count. Jeskai Ascendancy is just for consistency. And an alternate win condition if you happen to run Monastery Mentor because all of your creatures then become mana dorks as well when you run Lightning Greaves with Puresteel Paladin and Paradise Mantle on the field.

The problems with these decks is that they can't handle heavy disruption. Control is fine because you can bait stuff out, but not discard paired with removal.

Very fragile Femme_Fatale at least around my meta. We've got twin, Abzhan aggro, Tasigifts, R/G tron, fish, burn x2, aristocrats, affinity, this, and bloom titan.

April 27, 2015 10:35 a.m.

Well the disruption problem is normal. All storm decks have weak spots, but others have ways to compensate. Ascendancy storm has a sideboard toolbox where they can fetch counter spells and other protection (for example), this one has none. If someone kills your key pieces, its hard for you to get back into the game.

April 27, 2015 1:36 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #20

I already know this benelas16. I play the deck after all.

That's the nature of budget versions FAMOUSWATERMELON. What differs from this archetype from regular storm builds is that you can have a storm piece and yet at the same time have a tempo piece or a voltron piece. That is always how I built my decks before going full tempo with Myth Realized. I had a combo which could flat out win me the game, but never needed to as I could just play the deck like a voltron or a tempo deck. That's where the resiliency of this deck comes in, as splitting the focus on two separate areas still actually leaves us with enough consistency that the two areas are potent enough to be diluted.

April 27, 2015 2:58 p.m.

Fair. But enough of the criticism. I love the new style!

April 27, 2015 4:28 p.m.

Riddlesmith possibly? I mean, he does Mox Opal too and he's cheaper.

April 28, 2015 3:58 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #23

perhaps ... but the benefit with Jeskai Ascendancy is that it procs on Path to Exile, Retract and Steelshaper's Gift, and isn't boltable. Though it is harder to cast, but isn't much of an issue with mana artifacts.

April 28, 2015 4:04 p.m.

Wasn't talking about the budget, but about the main deck :)

April 28, 2015 4:04 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #25

No. I can't afford to discard when I'm not proc'ing a combo. Discarding is this deck's greatest weakness.
