As almost everyone knows by know, Korvold, Fae-Cursed King is one of the most busted commanders to ever been printed. Unfortunately, he has quite the sweet ability and seems really fun to play with. However, how can one play with such a powerful commander without being too similar to other decks or too oppressive? Simple. Arbitrary deckbuilding restrictions!

Having all of that in mind, I decided to make a ""Pauper"" Korvold! Though I have to say this is not a Pauper EDH deck. There's actually a format called Pauper EDH with its own rules and community. What I'm doing here is just an excuse to play Korvold without it being the same generic thing everyone is tired to play against. For example, no Chandra's Ignition for an instant win.

I would like to mention all the cards were searched on Scryfall with rarity:common because since this is Commander I don't want to limit myself to Pauper's banlist. So, that's why Arcum's Astrolabe is in the list.

Who's the Commander? Show

I know that everyone knows Korvold, Fae-Cursed King by now. Still, for those that are unaware of him, don't know how he plays or are reading this out of having nothing better to do, I'll be talking a lit bit about how he works.

His fame as one of the strongest Commanders in recent sets isn't an exaggeration, and definitely isn't his sacrifice on ETB/attack ability that makes him such a powerhouse. What makes Korvold, Fae-Cursed King such a beast is his second ability:

"Whenever you sacrifice a permanent, put a +1/+1 counter on Korvold and draw a card."

With this, the Dragon noble becomes not only a win condition by growing enough to one-hit KO an opponent with Commander damage, but also a card draw engine. Let's break down part by part.

The +1/+1 counter part is very similar to another Commander, Kresh the Bloodbraided. Both grow when things die. However, there's a catch. While Kresh the Bloodbraided can technically grow faster than Korvold, Fae-Cursed King, he cannot grow from literally anything, which is the reason why the dragon's ability is better. Sure, you can sacrifice something like a huge eldrazi to grow Kresh, but when 21 combat damage is enough to kill a player in Commander, that's kinda overkill. So, even though Korvold's ability to grow is certainly more versatile, it wouldn't be enough to differentiate him from the likes of Kresh. That's where the second half of the ability comes in.

Being a 3 color deck with common cards only can be pretty tough on the manabase. Luckily, there's quite a few colorless artifacts to help ramp and filter the mana.

Unfortunately, this doesn't filter the mana. However, two mana ramp is always useful in any kind of deck. The Mind Stone in particular has the added benefit of sinergizing with Korvold, Fae-Cursed King since when it becomes useless, it can be cheaply sacrificed to draw two cards (in case the Commander is on the field).

Two Card Combo: Ivy Lane Denizen + Rendclaw Trow

This requires a bit of explanation since the two cards by themselves aren't a combo, but work as a combo with other pieces. Ivy Lane Denizen is a simple +1/+1 counter generator that cares about green creatures entering the battlefield. Rendclaw Trow is a black/green creature with wither (completely irrelevant in this deck) and persist, meaning that when it dies, if it didn't have any -1/-1 counters, it comes back with a -1/-1 counter. You can probably see the combo now. Whenever Rendclaw Trow dies and comes back, the Ivy Lane Denizen can put a +1/+1 counter on it, cancelling the -1/-1 counter. However, the Trow can't sacrifice itself and the Denizen can sacrifice the Trow.

Now I'm gonna talk about the rest of the combo, the movable/redundant pieces. Since the two card combo isn't properly a combo without at the very least a sacrifice outlet, let's star with these.

There's a few sac outlets in the deck (after starting to write this I realized that there may no be enough). Things like Bloodflow Connoisseur and Thermopod transforms the two card interaction into a proper combo. Bloodflow Connoisseur can keep sacrificing the Trow infinitely to grow itself while feeding card:Korvold, Fae-Cursed, who will also be growing and drawing cards, and Thermopod basically generates infinite red mana.
