(It's not Modern legal)

Oops. Hah. Other suggestions?

You could use Chalice of the Void to prevent them from playing their 1-drop spells. The only problem is that it shuts off your mill engine and you'd have to rely on Mind Funeral , Duskmantle, House of Shadow , and Elixir of Immortality to win.

GoldGhost012 says... #5

Well actually, Chalice of the Void cuts off Elixir of Immortality too, so that could prove to be a big problem.

Holy crap, and Lantern of Insight . So never mind, definitely not Chalice of the Void . Maybe Spellskite to redirect the burn spells? But not exactly budget... I don't know.

June 16, 2014 3:20 p.m.

@ GoldGhost012 -- Yup, no Chalice haha. The burn spells aren't as much of a problem as they T1 Goblin Guide s and such. Golgari Charm would help a lot if I was B/G haha

Ratchet Bomb or Engineered Explosives may actually be your best bet then.

June 16, 2014 3:28 p.m.

GoldGhost012 -- Ratchet Bomb ! There was a card I thought of last night and I couldn't remember it this morning. Ah, but the 1-drops are the biggest problem. I'm all 1-drops :(

Is there a less intensive Black Sun's Zenith ?

June 16, 2014 3:33 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #10

Well, there's Damnation ... but otherwise, no, I don't think so. I checked Gatherer for both -1/-1 counters and destroy creatures.

June 16, 2014 3:41 p.m.

@ GoldGhost012 -- Black Sun's Zenith would essentially serve the same purpose as Damnation in my situation. Most of the time I need to board wipe a bunch of 1/1's or 2/2's. Ah yes and Tarmogoyf is a problem, but I can usually stop him from hitting the board from counters and top control.

Hey thanks again for all of the help with this deck. I really appreciate all of your suggestions and the time you're taking to help me out.

June 16, 2014 3:49 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #12

True... it also helps that BSZ is much, much more budget than Damnation , especially if they're going to be doing the same thing.

No problem! It's summer, school's out, and I don't have anything better to do until corn detasseling starts, haha.

June 16, 2014 4:10 p.m.

@ GoldGhost012 -- Do you think it's a SB card or something worth putting into the MB? And same. I've been home from school for a month and I'm so ready to start work and/or go back to school hah.

June 16, 2014 4:24 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #14

Maybe both. Possibly 3 total with at least 1 in the main and the rest in the side to counter creature heavy decks.

June 16, 2014 4:28 p.m.

@ GoldGhost012 -- How about dropping one Ghoulcaller's Bell for one MB and one Illness in the Ranks and one Dispel for two in the SB?

June 16, 2014 4:30 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #16

I think that should play out fine.

Would Nephalia Drownyard be better than Duskmantle, House of Shadow ? It does cost one more to activate but gets a 1:1 ratio of mana to mill instead of the 2:1.

tj70 says... #18

After looking more into your deck, I see you are looking to just take care of the top card. I guess I can see how Duskmantle, House of Shadow plays more into that. Your thoughts on Nephalia Drownyard ?

June 16, 2014 10:28 p.m.

@ tj70 -- I was originally running a copy of Nephalia Drownyard , but I rarely found myself having enough mana to crack it at the end of my opponent's turn. If I did, I'd usually save it for a counterspell. Ironically, milling one can be better than three in this deck; if you get rid of their Tarmogoyf and two lands, you just helped them out by getting rid of two dead draws - they're sure to have another Goyf.

Nice deck definite +1. Do you have any thoughts on splashing red for Elemental Augury ?

I love this. This is absolutely brilliant haha and looks super fun to screw on people. I think I'm going to play this over my heartless summoning build. Any thought on Dimir Charm in the deck?

June 16, 2014 11:24 p.m.

@ Arctic -- Splashing a color on a budget like mine, in Modern, is near impossible. If I were to eliminate the budget, I'd suggest adding green on maybe even white. This deck needs a way to deal with artifacts and enchantments that can shut it down, and green will give that, plus some additional removal. You only need to control the top card, and it works better if that's all you do. I've applied the same reasoning to Nephalia Drownyard . Plus, Elemental Augury is mana intensive, and a cost of 3 is pretty hefty for this deck - I've played (and won) games that I only see two lands.

@ 2austin5 -- I can't take all of the credit - I've gotten ideas from the Pixy Stix article mentioned in the description and a lot of help from GoldGhost. The deck still is in testing, and it needs some tweaking. It works great when I get a good hand, but that isn't as frequent as it should be. Dimir Charm could work, all three of its abilities have applications in the deck. Do you have any suggestions regarding what to cut?

I think I may have found a solution to the Leyline of Sanctity and such problem (GoldGhost012, tagging you too to see if you have imput). Is there a playable Totally Lost (lower CMC)? I found Vanishment which could work because setting it up for a Miracle would be easy. Return their enchantment to the top of their library and then mill it. It's a half-assed Nature's Claim , but I think it'd work in the deck. Thoughts?

June 16, 2014 11:49 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #23

The thing with Vanishment is you're miracling it or you're not casting it at all.

For permanent to library, there's Consign to Dream . Otherwise Cyclonic Rift may be a possiblity, as well as AEther Tradewinds , Boomerang , Disperse , Echoing Truth , Into the Roil , and Repeal .

as much as I like Surgical Extraction , I feel that it could get replaced or even the one of Black Sun's Zenith . Surgical is just a better sideboard card in most scenarios that I have seen

June 17, 2014 12:32 a.m.

@ GoldGhost012 -- That's true about Vanishment , I never want to see one in my opening hand now when I need it. I don't like Consign to Dream either though, since the threats I want to get rid of are either white or colorless.

I think Echoing Truth or Boomerang are my best options. I'm leaning towards the former because it doesn't have a double blue cost. Thoughts?

@ 2austin5 -- I have found the mainboard Black Sun's Zenith to be under-performing. I like the mainboard Surgical Extraction s because there's always something threatening to pop. I have been finding two copies of Artificer's Intuition too much, so how about I drop one of those, the Zenith, and... a Mana Leak for three charms?
