I've just come back from a tuesday night magic, and through the games i've played tonight, i can't quite cover how much Rewind has saved me,

being able to counter a spell and still cast either another counter such as Psychic Strike (which i did too two boros reckoners in one turn xP) or even still cast a Grisly Spectacle , it has been deffinately one of the most valuable cards of the night,

I think you should playtest the card atleast!

How do you feel about Dream Twist ? I love that both the original cost and flashback cost are so cheap + it's an instant

So we need a replacement for Jace's Phantasm ... in one week. Mining the Gatherer db for a 1 CMC creature in B or U turned up an interesting find: Realmwright . It isn't a direct replacement for JP, but I don't think we're going to find anything nearly as good for a while. The 'wright does help solve a different kind of problem in the deck, though.

M13 doesn't rotate until Theros comes out

July 6, 2013 4:16 a.m.

Pyroshade says... #7

yup, no rotation until around September 27th (the announced date for the next block which is named Theros)So your jaces are fine until then, not to mention if you look at the 2014 cards, jace MAY not saying he will but might be reprinted, or there MAY be a better alternative to Realmwright .

out of the 2014 cards i've seen only one really hits me as usefull for this deck, which is Elite Arcanist

"3UCreature - Human WizardWhen Elite Arcanist enters the battlefield, you may exile an instant card from your hand.

X, T: Copy the exiled card. You may cast the copy without paying its mana cost. X is the converted mana cost of the exiled card.Illus. James Zapata #54/249 1/1"

because you can exile a counter spell and have it there for a good while, or even Thought Scour which would be very nice, only that as he is he is very prone to removal....

Took this to Friday night magic. Didn't work out too well... 0-5.
I'm not sure if I should move on, or try and get it to work :(

Wow ducttapedeckbox. You got some loyal fans for this deck

Well, my thoughts. Elite arcanist is especially good since it says to cast the copy which triggers aberration. But, it is slow and very prone to removal especially with doom blade coming out (hint hint)

nickhapp sorry to here that. What decks did you play against? Maybe you meta is just too fast

July 6, 2013 9:42 a.m.

Boy I guess I do, tempest. Elite Arcanist would be a great addition if his body wasn't so weak - he can die to pretty much any burn spell out there. Doom Blade may be too good to pass up to put in, so we'll see.

@ nickhapp -- What type of decks did you play again? As I've admitted many times, this deck doesn't stand up to top-tier FNM decks but is great against other decks of similar budget and things.

I think we'll be waiting to replace Jace's Phantasm when we are sure he isn't coming back. If he isn't, this deck will suffer a serious loss.

Also, I don't really see much benefit out of adding Realmwright .

I haven't added Dream Twist because.. err I've just never thought it was that powerful. And it's rotating out soon. Think Twice just doesn't have a mill component to it, so I've never added it.

i seriously doubt Jace's Phantasm will be reprinted. they already spoiled jace's mindseeker

July 6, 2013 2:45 p.m.

tempest says... #13

whoops sorry for the double post. you could add in Duress ... technically its not mill but it still rids them of a card... or consider adding strionic resonator to copy the aberration's ability... but, basically, this deck needs something powerful in the next 48 cards or it dies

July 6, 2013 2:48 p.m.

tempest says... #14

oh wait. (god, triple post) you have until theros as well actually since m13 doesn't rotate until theros

July 6, 2013 2:49 p.m.

@ tempest -- Yeah... this deck needs something. Give me something, Wizards! Something!

If they don't listen to me, I'll probably have to change to a creature-based mill. This deck relies way too heavily on the Phantasm to not have something like it.

ygamretuta says... #16

hey @ducttapedeckbox, m14 spoilers are complete and they are exciting! what will you replace for Tome Scour and Traumatize ? Also, can you find a place for Quicken in this deck, maybe to replace Thought Scour ?

July 8, 2013 12:54 a.m.

ygamretuta says... #17

also, if it is not too much, may I request that you post once in awhile about your FNM matches? I really am following and running the same deck since last March (though I lost a playset of Jace's Phantasm to a friend who borrowed it and never showed up again) and would love to see how you run it!

hmm... looks more like a creatureless mill to me now! lol

July 8, 2013 1:32 a.m.

ygamretuta says... #19

I had experiences with creatureless mills and it's really bad. Jace's Phantasm is soon rotating out and as mentioned I lost my playset of it but Wight of Precinct Six IMO is more than a viable replacement. With really quick mill he can be massive against creature-dominated metas, maybe useless against control because of their lack of creatures

The rest of M14 has been spoiled and things aren't looking good for the future of this deck atm. Let's hope and pray for some good Dimir and Mill stuff in Theros

@ducttapedeckbox - So, first off, I love what you've done here with your deck. It is very budget friendly, and with how everyone has been building decks as of late, I love the reaction at my FNM when my opponent realizes that he/she has nothing in their sideboard to counter my milling.

Secondly, I made a few changes (primarily due to the fact that I had the cards, but it makes the deck not so budget friendly), and I had a few interesting suggestions as far as the card draw issue and mill.

My current decklist is 1 Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker , 4 Jace's Phantasm , 3 Consuming Aberration , 2 Psychic Strike , 3 Grisly Spectacle , 4 Dimir Charm , 3 Far / Away , 2 Breaking / Entering , 2 Increasing Confusion , 4 Dream Twist , 2 Jace, Memory Adept , 4 Mind Sculpt , 2 Sphinx's Revelation , 4 Watery Grave , 4 Glacial Fortress , 1 Nephalia Drownyard (I only had one), 7 Swamp , and 8 Island .

Now for my explanations of why I changed what I did. Well, Jace, Memory Adept is an obvious addition. Pure mill for nothing and card draw if you REALLY need it. As you can notice the splash of white with Glacial Fortress and Sphinx's Revelation , the deck was seriously hurting for card draw, and I figured I could sideboard Supreme Verdict if I was up against a fast aggro deck. I decided to throw Mind Sculpt into the deck, since even though Breaking / Entering IS technically better, it's only better by one, and with Mind Sculpt , it's a little easier to cast if you're getting boned on the black mana (I somehow managed to get stuck with 3 Island and still managed to mill out more than half an opponent's library). Now, I switched out Mind Grind for Increasing Confusion , primarily for the flashback, especially with a Consuming Aberration on the field, saying that I can (and have) cast Increasing Confusion 0 for X, just to have it in the graveyard while activating Consuming Aberration 's effect. Same reason for Dream Twist . The flashback gets really nasty with Consuming Aberration on the field.

A few suggestions, since this deck is facing some phasing out with these next few releases. Well, one in particular. Pilfered Plans . Pilfered Plans is in essence two Thought Scour 's, with an additional mana cost. Mill, draw, one extra cost. Just thought I would try and contribute.

Thanks for such a great deck idea!

@ ducttapedeckbox, I previously posted as nickhapp (Friend left their account logged in), and I went 0-5. The decks I played against were mainly aggro and midrange. What really killed me was tons of removal. Almost every match, I would get a Consuming Aberration or 5/5 Jace's Phantasm out, and they would be exiled/ killed almost immediately. The only game I won, he whittled me down to 2 health, he had half of his deck left, and I used Mind Grind for 4. He had 3 lands left in the second half of his deck. He wasn't even mad, it was hilarious.

Pyroshade says... #23

problems with removal means you should either sideboard the Consuming Aberration or include something like Dying Wish as a deterrent, or even Crypt Incursion for life gain

Just got the last cards for this deck a couple of days ago. Playtestet it for some time now against my friends tournament decks and it definitely packs a punch. For a budget deck it works pretty good. I tryed adding Duskmantle Guildmage wich worked fine for pumping some fast damage with some of the big mill cards like Breaking / Entering I also tryed Increasing Confusion as suggested but always found that I had better mill options in my hand that Increasing Confusion so took it out again.Anyway great deck! Loads of fun to play with! +1 ofc.

You obviously know what your doing and have spent a lot of time on this deck. Can I ask for some help on my first deck Dimir cipher/mill? keep in mind that I use cipher+invisible stalker+consuming aberration to great effect
