I'm playing around with a similar deck but I'm using murderous redcap instead of safehold elite, and Varolz scar striped instead of blood artist. The benefit of that is that Time of Need can search up a trigger or a protective legendary. It also means that Summoner's Pact can search for a trigger, a persist, or a protective legendary.

woozie88: I actually don't like turn 3-4 wins myself. I prefer to play casually and usually just try to make games fun, rather than trying to win outright. (Although I do quite enjoy winning.) This is just my attempt at trying to create something Modern competitive where "fun" is a rare beast.

SpatulonMk3: I am aware that Hexproof does not stop Drown in Sorrow. If you are referring to Ranger's Guile, it is the additional "+1/+1 until end of turn" that keeps a 2 toughness combo creature alive as well as being able to provide Hexproof if needed against spot removal.

Serendipitous_Hummingbird: I never considered Summoner's Pact! That's a great suggestion Thank you! I am definitely going to give it a shot. I am not using Murderous Redcap because of his 4 CMC and the needed to cast him which greatly conflicts with the needed to cast Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit. He is also not usable with Collected Company. I tried him out for a while, but he just proved to make the deck too slow, even when considering that he acts as two pieces of the combo. I also used to run a few Time of Needs along with a singleton of Varolz, the Scar-Striped, but I eventually pulled them in favor of running more Collected Company and Bloodthrone Vampire, which proved to be much more consistent.

Anafenza doesn't get rid of -1/-1 counters. She just adds a +1/+1 to balance it out. The counter is still there, just uneffective, so persist doesn't go off again.

I don't know exactly where to point you to, but there is a ruling that opposite counters cancel each other out, which is why Mikaeus, the Unhallowed cancels out undying.

Just found out that is in fact the case, but I don't agree that should be the case. It's a dumb rule that makes things less interesting, but whatever floats your boat, I guess

You're running 6 Blasting Station. I like the deck tho

Monsmtg: Thanks! I am only running 3, but the way I have organized it Blasting Station is listed in both the Trigger and Sac sections as it performs both functions.

I really like this build but I think it could use more tutor effects. Personally, I think Chord of Calling would work great here because the most you would be chording for is 3 but more realistically it would be for 2. In terms of the previous comments I think chord would serve you better than say Summoner's Pact or Time of Need because it is instant speed and it is not limited to just one type of creature. Dropping the hand disruption would be more beneficial if you are focusing solely on the combo. Just some thoughts, hope it helps! +1

That's a cool deck.I would play four collected company and only one rangers guide, because most time you will use all your mana and can't cast your protection spells. Turn three win could become boring but it's a perfect turnament deck;)

Is there a way to make this a budget deck? The only things I can think of is replacing the shock and fetch lands with Sandsteppe Citadel and more basic lands.

Exiled_soul: I am playtesting with Chord of Calling and it works great. The only reason I am running the hand disruption is to get rid of counterspells and removal before they bust my combo. I'm currently divided between making the deck all about pulling off the combo as fast as possible, or pulling out extras of some combo pieces in favor of other threats or alternative win-cons to make the deck less vulnerable to disruption/more fun to play repeatedly.

abzanforever: (See above) Yea, the combo works wonderfully, it's usually combo out no later than turn 5 or lose - which can get really repetitive and boring sometimes. Definitely designed for tournament play only.

Frestho: As with a lot of decks, the Mana-base is by far the most expensive part of the deck. The Fetch Lands ($20) and Shock Lands ($8), and Mana Confluence ($10) account for over $200 of the deck. The Check Lands Woodland Cemetery and Sunpetal Grove are about $2 each and can be decent replacements. Slightly more expensive, yet still cheaper than the Fetch Lands is the Scars of Mrrodin Tap Land Razorverge Thicket which is around $4. With these, the deck would price drop to around the $150 range. But keep in mind that what you don't pay for in land you end up paying for in consistency. You could also replace the Kitchen Finks with Rendclaw Trow to pull another $20 or so from the deck. But the Kitchen Finks is well worth the extra penny for the life gain.

This deck is R00D
Id suggest something, but it seems like the deck is already perfect, gonna play test it against some other decks and see how it works out

I playtest on Forge, but the version I have doesnt have dragons of tarkir implemented, so its a lot less consistent with a couple cards I threw in
Gonna proxy this and play at school, get some input there

A relatively similar list just won 1st place at the Starcity 5k modern event. Just letting you know that collected company combo is a real and powerful thing now!

I've found that with this deck the single best card is Collected Company.

I don't think Melira, Sylvok Outcast can actually help you here. She prevents those counters from being placed on your persist creatures but since they return to play with the counter, it doesn't seem like she can do anything. The -1/-1 counter is there as it enters play, it's not placed on it once the creature has entered.

May 17, 2015 12:59 a.m.

Exiled_soul says... #18

@shilabaca: That is EXACTLY why Melira is so good in this deck because she prevents the -1/-1 counters from being placed on the creature when they come back in. It goes like so... creatures dies, hits the graveyard, comes back off of the persist, enters the battlefield, would then normally get a -1/-1 counter but Melira states that your creatures can not have -1/-1 counters placed on them while she is in play so in short it comes back with no -1/-1 counter.

shilabaca says... #19

@Exiled_soul Seems like you're right. I get what it's supposed to do in context it just feels intuitively wrong. Since the persist creature enters with the -1/-1, it seems like the counter shouldn't be placed on the creature once the creature spell resolves and the creature lands in play, the counter is already associated with the creature before it resolves. Anyway, found this http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/magic-fundamentals/magic-rulings/magic-rulings-archives/293154-melira-and-pyrrhic-revival. Looks like it's a widely accepted effect so I'm convinced. Interesting nuance.

AWESOME deck. Seems extremely redundant and very difficult to keep from "comb-ing off". Great job. +1 of course.

I'm finding that Cartel Aristocrat is good against burn, and that Fiend Hunter can stave off big threats as you can Chord for it, on trigger sac it, and permanently exile a large threat (like Emrakul, the Aeons Torn on turn 3 as a worst case scenario).

These recommendations are strictly one-ofs in the 75.

Voice of Resurgence proooobably should be here somewhere but if you're running well... eh.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for being sane and running Blood Artist +1 for that.

The SCG list is quite convincing... This list, though, looks great! Honestly, this is pretty cool - and as a combo player, I'm glad to see this combo still work without the extra Junk (pun intended)! +1
