Please Don't Exile My Graveyard, Daddy

Commander / EDH* BGW (Abzan, Junk) Reanimator

EricTheHoff

This is a pretty straight-forward reanimator deck. Nethroi, Apex of Death has a very explosive mutate ability, so we'll be wanting to take full advantage to win the game. You'll almost never cast Nethroi for his normal mana value (2WBG).

A couple of things to keep in mind with this deck:

  1. Early prints of Hermit Druid indicate that he is a Druid, but he's officially a Human Druid. This means that we cannot target him with Nethroi's mutate ability (mutate can only target non-Human creatures). The other humans in this deck that we cannot target with mutate are Doomed Necromancer, Eternal Witness, Saffi Eriksdotter, and Syr Konrad, the Grim.

  2. Polukranos, Unchained has an interesting interaction with this deck. In your graveyard/library, Polukranos's power is considered 0, which means he is a free pull with Nethroi. It also works nicely with Graceful Restoration, as you can choose the second option to grab a Polukranos and anything else with power 2 or less.

  3. Only 32 lands?? It's actually 35 with the Agadeem's Awakening  , Bala Ged Recovery  , and Turntimber Symbiosis  . We've also got plenty of ramp to top out the rest of our mana needs.

  4. If you have Entomb and Animate Dead/Reanimate in your opening hand, you can get any creature of your choice onto the Battlefield by turn 2.

  5. If you have Animate Dead in your graveyard, you can have an extra-powerful Sun Titan trigger by returning the Animate Dead, which could grab something else like Avacyn, Angel of Hope instead.

  6. A challenge that some reanimation decks can run into is that they mill themselves out before they win (especially with cards like Hermit Druid). If you have an Underrealm Lich, you cannot lose the game to mill. Because Lich replaces all of your draw effects, you technically never draw a card; you always just look at the top 3. If there are no cards left in the library, then the ability fizzles, but you won't lose the game because you never draw a card.

Enjoy! I've seen some builds that focus more on continuous mutating, but honestly, 1 or 2 mutate triggers is enough to win a game.
