Before you read too much into the deck it’s important to note, THIS IS A CASUAL DECK. If you’re looking for the cEDH variants of the deck I recommend looking at the spike feeders or YouTube. If you’re looking for a casual deck that has big spells, high interaction with a lot of room for flavour, then this will be it.

As gathered, our commanders Thrasios, Triton Hero and Vial Smasher the Fierce are an amazing pairing, especially in casual. We’ll get to Vial Smasher in a bit but let’s focus on our main merfolk man. Thrasios is an amazing commander offering the best colours in the format. CMC is low, he’s a 2/3 which gets around some quick spot removal, but what makes him great is his ability. The ability offers, card draw, card selection as well as ramp, this alone would be great but it’s also in colourless mana which means it’s a great mana sink. Cards like Training Grounds and Biomancer's Familiar allow us it to abuse it lowering how much we pay, and are often our first things we get with our tutor suite Vampiric Tutor Demonic Tutor Worldly Tutor Green Sun's Zenith. Thrasios allows any game play to run smoother, faster, and more consistently whilst offering great colours, and once we get going with untapping stuff with Wilderness Reclamation and Seedborn Muse we can activate it multiple times before we get back to our turn. It isn’t unusual to double the amount of land we have before our next turn, or even triple if we’re scrying specifically to get lands. He can so easily be broken with infinite mana and is something often seen in competitive but this deck doesn’t do this and instead focuses on lowering the amount we pay whilst also making our lands (of which we will have many) tap for more through cards like Zendikar Resurgent as well as the new Nyxbloom Ancient which will be going in this deck. This allows vial smasher to shine also.

Vial Smasher the Fierce rewards big spells hitting our opponents randomly (bit of fun doing this as well) for damage equal to the CMC of the first card we cast each turn. So, if we cast Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre on cast we will roll a die to see which of our opponents will take 11 damage. This works exactly how we’d hope. If we cast cards like Villainous Wealth and Torment of Hailfire (the latter has a place in this deck but is absent since it’s an easy win) where we can cast them for 20 and Vial Smasher will hit someone for 20. We are rewarded for playing big things which we already want to play with the amounts of mana we get from Thrasios. Notice importantly, it says each turn...with untapping shenanigans going on already with Thrasios why not cast big spells on everyone’s turn! With cards like Josh Lee Kwai‘s pet card Vedalken Orrery as well as Leyline of Anticipation we achieve this and are cards we’re always looking out for when looking to activate vial smasher. Vial Smasher can provide consistent pecking away at our opponents and when we throw cards like Vampiric Link and Curiosity on him we’ll be gaining life and drawing cards doing so.

Both of these commander together offer a concise gameplan that no matter what we’re doing or which commander is out, we are working towards. The deck can be switched to be more competitive or more casual but choosing different big spells to play and different ramp packages.
