Day 173: still not sure how it works —Feb. 18, 2017

Looking through, I see that the deck has enough thought put into it in order to work decently... but not well built enough to work the way it does.

Sweet! I've always wanted to build Nekusar. From what I can tell getting wheels is not possible due to availability?

Yeah, how did you know XDAlso, on a side note, running infect works wonders on him, but doing so is just asking for being targeted. So, if you want to do that, run a lot of defensive spells.

SO I recently heard about the whole "when a commander is put in the bottom of the library, its owner can choose to put it into the command zone" rule. So spell crumple is out. It was a fun card to use against say, their commander. So, seeing as mill decks are a thing, I decided to put in one of the old Eldrazi Titans. So I put in Ulamog.

So I fitted in a few cards. First off, I got my hands on Phyresis, and swapped out one of my extra draws. I also put in Leyline of anticipation, Epicenter (fun but old card) Isochron scepter, corrupted conscience, psychosis crawler, and mu personal favorite: time reversal. Wheels everyone and as an added bonus screws up mill decks. Kazuul, Cliff tyrant is going out once i find an Ensnaring Bridge, and same with Gamble for Vampiric Tutor.

Nonono you need to get rid of Increasing Ambition for Vampiric Tutor

Entrei says... #8

Nah, while ik the whole more efficient mana wise, I have it in there bc I often wheel myself, or just use it. I will take out gamble probably tho for it, bc gamble always ends up making me discard something I need, like lands, the card I tutored for, etc. In addition, having an extra thing to use mana on late game is pretty nice

So, combocrazy: i was looking thru the my local card shop and beheld the beauty of a time spiral! Yay, another wheel and this one untaps stuff. I also added in havoc festival,(fun for speeding up games and against life gain decks) wound reflection (speeds up games). I also got a wandering fumarole, which is a great replacement for the kinda useless izzet guild gate. Got a graven cairn, which is also lovely. Best thing is: with double the amount of wheels in the deck compared to before (archivist, shocker, incendiary command -> archivist, shocker, incendiary command, dragon mage, time reversal, time spiral) i get those game ending wheels a lot more often. And then i found the card winds of change... geez i need it. bummer it is ancient, and hard to find

Scratch that, I'm switching out gamble for demonic tutor, and ambition for vampiric tutor

Hey, I would consider Tezzeret the Seeker for tutoring in some ramp. Also Bloodchief Ascension and Mindcrank would do serious work here. Lastly I'd consider Memory Jar and Liliana's Caress as solid additions. Maybe take out some single target removal and just play No Mercy to free up space.

Entrei says... #13

So yeah I had been trying to get my hands on a no mercy, which arrived a day after you said that. BloodChief ascension is nice, and I have been trying to find one, but I currently need curiosity, ophidian eye, and glistening oil more, so I will order that once I find the other two. My local card shop had one a while ago... Someone bought it before I could. I also need whispering madness (wheel with cipher, can cipher it onto keyrune or tarpit to wheel every turn unblockable). However, I DID find a mind over matter (consecrated sphinx+forced fruition goes nuts, with niv mizzet otherworld atlas or archivist it goes infinite) and a chrome mox (no explanation of what it does or why it went in needed). Any other suggestions aside from damnation, wheel of fortune, vampiric/demonic tutor, and the stuff you already mentioned?

I feel like Notion Thief ruins the point of Nekusar, because what's the point of punishing them for cards they're not drawing? I might go with a Stranglehold just in case someone else tries to tutor. Otherwise, great deck. I'm a big fan of Grixis and Nekusar.

Entrei says... #15

Yeah, notion thief is kinda a double edged sword. However, what I often do is have him out while they are about to draw a bunch of cards, so I then draw into a boardwipe, and then wipe all of their creatures. Kinda situational, but in the cases he is useful he is great.

That does make sense, especially considering that he has flash.

Dvanonod Thanks for the upvote! If I may ask, how did you come across this deck? I haven't deckcycled it recently, so were you looking for Nekusar Builds?

Entrei Yes no problem lol. I have my own deck I wanna see what's in your deck and i always like to look around to make sure that I'm not missing out on some combos :)

Knollspine Dragon seems like it's too costly for what it does. I wouldn't add it, personally.

Vandalblast needs to be mainboarded in place of Smelt as well.

NarejED, as THE expert on EDH, may I request your input on this deck?

I have been summoned.

Thanks for all the nice things you said about me on my wall!

First, let's talk lands. I'm guessing there's a budget based on the lack of ABUR dual lands, so I'll try to keep my suggestions cheat. Luckily this will mostly focus on cuts rather than additions. You're currently running a lot of lands that are actually worse than basics overall. arcane lighthouse, Bojuka Bog, Boseiju, Who Shelters All, Creeping Tar Pit, Ghost Quarter, Lavaclaw Reaches, Myriad Landscape, Spinerock Knoll, and Vivid Creek would all be better as basic lands, preferably islands. For (relatively) cheap additions, I'd recommend picking up a Flooded Strand, Wooded Foothills, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Mana Confluence, City of Brass, and Ancient Tomb.

If you do end up deciding to increase your island count significantly, I would highly recommend putting in a High Tide package consisting of Tide, Frantic Search, and possibly Snap. Tide is one the best reasons to play Blue, especially in UBx builds like Grixis, which can fully capitalize on it. If you

I would also recommend adding more early-game fuel. You're missing all three of the Signets, Talisman of Indulgence, Fellwar Stone, Lotus Petal, Grim Monolith, and a lot of the great cantrips like Ponder, Brainstorm, and Preordain. Ad Nauseam, Cabal Ritual, Mystic Remora, Necropotence, Gamble, Gitaxian Probe, Windfall, Chain of Vapor, and several powerful low-cost counterspells like Pyroblast are also notably amiss. For Nekusar-specific suggestions, I see a lot of lists running Reforge the Soul, Winds of Change, and Geth's Grimoire.

For cuts to make room for some of these suggestions, I recommend the following:

Gilded Lotus, Elder Mastery, life's Finale, Mind Over Matter, Time Stop, Necromantic Selection, Decree of Pain, Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre, Illusionist's Gambit, Leyline of Anticipation, Nevinyrral's Disk, No Mercy, Thran Dynamo, Burnished Hart, Darksteel Ingot, Black Sun's Zenith, otherworld atlas, and Smelt. All of these cards cost too much mana, don't impact the game in a significant way, are almost strictly worse than another card, or some combination of the three.

Hope I was able to help!

NarejED first off: whoah, long comment. A couple thoughts on what you said though. First off: Necropotence: I tried running it for a while... But it exiling what I ended up discarding from wheels often ended up killing me later on.As for taking out ulamog... This deck has a combo with mind over matter and otherworld atlas that infinitely mills the table except for anyone running a Titan .

Other than that... Thanks! I will look into your suggestions!

None of those three cards are good on their own, and three-card combos are generally frowned upon, especially when they don't involve your commander. You can safely cut all three and focus on better combos.
