"Oh, hello there. I will stay behind, to gaze at the sun.
The sun is a wondrous body. Like a magnificent father!
If only I could be so grossly incandescent!"
-Solaire of Astora
Welcome to the wonderful world of Lordran! A place where if you run into another living being it most likely wants you eviscerated and sent back to whatever bonfire you foolishly crawled from the safety of. Although it appears as though the very land wishes nothing more than to be the cause of your death, never fear! The Knights of Astora are here to help you fend off the evils inhabiting the land of Lordran from the depths of Blighttown to the halls of Anor Lando itself. So don’t feel ashamed to call upon them when you see their golden glow emanating from the runes on the floor; it’s not ganking, its jolly co-operation!
Here's a little walk-through of how a Turn 4 win is possible:
T1: Windswept Heath into Plains, play Aether Vial
T2: Plains, Play Student of Warfare with Aether Vial, Level her up twice.
T3: Plains, Aether Vial out Knight of Meadowgrain and play Mirran Crusader; Swing for 3.
T4: Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, Aether Vial into a Knight Exemplar; Tap
nythos, shrine to nyx
and two Plains for seven mana to play both Elspeth, Knight-Errant and another Knight Exemplar. Use Elspeth's (+1) on Mirran Crusader making him a 7/7 double strike with flying. Swing for 23 total damage.
Creatures:
Fiendslayer Paladin: My amazing Solaire of Astora (and the inspiration behind the theming of this deck)! My local Meta runs a lot of black and red, mostly burn and removal, which my good friend here cannot be targeted by. Both his firststrike and lifelink not only give him some longevity, but myself as well; making it so I can outlast some other aggro style decks with just enough lifegain to make a difference. I know a lot of people don’t think he pulls his weight in Modern, but I absolutely love him!
Mirran Crusader: Here we have the masterful Oscar, Knight of Astora. I feel as though I don’t really need to explain this choice, but I will. Crusader is an absolute beast of a work horse; he is basically my Abzan killer since he has protection from 2/3 of the deck type. He gives me a win con and a big body to flash in with vial for some combat tricks as well.
Knight Exemplar: Possibly my favorite NPC from DS3 Anri of Astora. As the Lord of Knights she is amazing. She not only improves how aggressive the deck can be by giving knights +1/+1, but she works as a utility by giving them indestructible. That being said, she comes out with a huge target on her back and, thus, needs to be protected at all costs. Having two of her out is imperative since she is incredibly vulnerable to Bolt. I'm thinking of adding in 1-2 Brave the Elements for some added protection for her and against early damage sweepers.
Knight of the White Orchid: The ever quick and dangerous Undead Prince Ricard. Not only is he a 2/2 beater with first strike, but he also helps me not fall behind in the land department. To be honest that’s not too big of a problem in this deck build, but as a 2/2 knight with first strike for {w}{w} can’t be passed up. Flashing him in with Vial while down a land can really throw off an opponent giving me an extra land he/she was not expecting to play a much needed removal or protection spell.
Knight of Meadowgrain: Another 2/2 body with first strike and lifelink. She helps me stay alive in the early game and can be a real threat when combined with the other knights in late game situations.
Leonin Skyhunter: Another 2/2 body with flying for early damage, for the cost he is cheap and effective against most decks.
Student of Warfare: One of the best early game aggressive knights in modern. With Nykthos he can become a late game finisher as a 4/4 with double strike. I can't overstate how much I love this card. It has won me a ton of games since I built this deck. She's an easy turn 2 play and gives great board presence.
Wilt-Leaf Liege Another turn 4 finisher. She is an absolute monster on the field buffing my other creatures and has the possibility of hitting the field early if playing a discard deck.
Artifacts:
Aether Vial: Think of this as your White Soapstone. The Vial helps with deck acceleration by getting more knights on the field faster than my opponent can deal with them. It’s staple of any tribal aggro deck for a reason. I also love the flashing ability of Vial, it can become a hassle pretty quickly. Flashing in a creature with protection or an extra blocker at the right time can change the flow of the game in your favor incredibly quickly.
Instants:
Path to Exile: A staple of any deck in Modern that runs white. Possibly the best removal card in the format, it works quite well in conjunction with Knight of the White Orchid to erase the effects of its downside.
Enchantments:
Honor of the Pure: Gives a much needed boost to my small knights, ramping up the aggressiveness of the deck.
Planeswalker:
Elspeth, Knight-Errant: A game finisher. Having the possibility of giving me a 1/1 chump blocker or providing one of my knights with a pair of wings to float over enemy lines and strike my opponent directly. She works well with Crusader by giving him +3/+3 (making him a 5/5 with double strike) and flying to deal, at the very least, 10 damage on turn 4 which, hopefully, will end the game.
MFW you guys support my brew:
I want to take a moment and thank everyone who supported this deck and gave suggestions as to how I can make it even better. So thank you my beautiful Sunbros! May the Sun always bathe you in its incandescent glow!!
