Primer: The American Dream
That turn 3 triumph in Modern, oh the American Dream... Let's make it a reality!
I've always loved the abilities of Kiln Fiend and Nivix Cyclops. I think they are super fun (which is what playing magic is all about, right??), so I've decided to build a deck using them. This deck is not meant for Pro Tour-level competitive play, but if you want to have fun at your local FNM or make some pretty EPIC plays casually with your friends, you are in the right place!
***If you are interested, in the Updates Section below, I've posted a viable budget version of the deck that is by only changing the land base and 3 cards! And you can definitely go way cheaper if you want to!***
This deck is meant to be fast. Drop potent creatures, clear the board with removal or just barge through if necessary. Unanswered, this deck can win T3 or T4, pretty consistently.
The Breakdown
THE FEARSOME FOUR:
Kiln Fiend / Nivix Cyclops - The BIG GUNS to victory in the early-game. They possess incredibly high burst damage when paired with the plethora of instants/sorceries. For matchups where your opponent does have much removal or early game interaction, This is the way you go.
Young Pyromancer / Monastery Mentor - The tactical weapons of choice to stay relevant and domineering into the late-game. These token generators provide card advantage and board presence as we topdeck instants/sorceries. If you suspect a matchup with a lot of controlling elements preventing your early game victory, this path is the way to go.
UTILITY:
Boros Charm / Temur Battle Rage - This is essential for the early game kills. All of a sudden, Kiln Fiend's +3/+0 proc is effectively doubled in damage. Boros Charm adds damage flexibility and boardwipe resilience while Temur Battle Rage has the advantage of instantly proccing double strike with trample.
Emerge Unscathed - Amazing utility card. It protects your creatures from removal, allows your creatures to attack the opponent directly, and activates triggers twice over the course of two turns.
PLAYER BOARD INTERACTION:
Lightning Bolt - Staple in almost any red deck. Cheap and efficient removal, which is important if we want to cast multiple instants/sorceries early-game. Doubles as extra damage to the opponent if necessary.
Path to Exile - Staple removal for white. Also cheap, and it can deal with the larger creatures that Lightning Bolt cannot.
Electrolyze - Currently playtesting. Can potentially two-for-zero in terms of card advantage. The card draw helps you from losing valuable momentum, late-game.
Gitaxian Probe / Gut Shot - Free spells are great! The "freeness" and card draw makes T3 or T4 wins much more consistent. Looking at the opponent's hand is also a nice plus.
Example Turn 3 Finish
T1 - Land
T2 - Land, Kiln Fiend
T3 - Land, Boros Charm, Emerge Unscathed, Gitaxian Probe
Kiln Fiend becomes a 10/2 Double Strike, Protection from X. Potentially swings for 20 damage directly!
Sideboard
The sideboard can be catered to your meta accordingly. Access to Red, White, and Blue mana provides many sideboard option tailored to your needs.
