I'm trying to build the same deck. The problem I see is, the moment people see the proteus staff+Fblthp you are going to be the archenemy. Nonetheless, good luck.

Don't forget Mind Over Matter , Gilded Lotus for all deck draw combo.

Koka in my humble opinion, Mind Over Matter and Gilded Lotus are a bit slow for what this deck aims to achieve. This list is meant for cEDH and I those cards are too high on the mana curve for my liking. I know I have yet to highlight my lines of winning, but when Proteus Staff hits the board, it's kind of the point to become the archenemy because it's a one card combo with Fblthp that allows you to win on the spot when you activate it essentially. I'll be sure to list my win lines in detail today if you want to check them out. Regardless, thank you for the suggestions and the upvote! Much appreciated!

Dango I spoke too soon. And those cards do suck for what we want to do. Please disregard my comment :D

Koka No worries! I can see the pieces you suggested working in more of a casual meta, but for the sake of mana efficiency I think it would be best to stick to my current lines. I have the win lines listed and highlighted in the description now if you'd like to take a look!

Funny that people think Staff fizzles to the 2nd ability lol

IAmTheWraith I thought so too, but Fblthp doesn't shuffle on abilities.

Just so you know as long as you have enough mana you can take infinite turns with cards like Beacon of Tomorrows and Nexus of Fate since they shuffle back into your library and you can just re tutor them every turn. That allows you to win off of upkeep triggers or just infinite loyalty abilities on planeswalkers like Jace Beleren Jace, the Mind Sculptor Jace, Cunning Castaway . Or you can slowly assemble other combo pieces like Rings of Brighthearth and Basalt Monolith and search up and use cards like Stroke of Genius to win.

Fila_Mindbender in all honesty I thought about it in my initial draft along with other win cons like Aetherflux Reservoir because I wasn't sure which direction Fblthp wanted to go. I personally am not a fan of extra turn spells in this at least because they seem pretty roundabout and prolong the game. I have a strong preference towards win conditions that win on the spot, and I don't see how infinite turns would benefit me aside from making my playgroup groan while I play by myself. Right now USZ and Double Scepter wins seem the most viable and promising to close out games.

Command Beacon can get him to your hand if he’s been killed a bunch, then things like Brainstorm can get him back to library. Jace, the Mind Sculptor similarly.

I think decking yourself could pose an issue, perhaps either the new Jace or Laboratory Maniac could be a fix, I realize already been considered but is important I think. I also like creatures that want a big hand and help draw more, like Kefnet the Mindful , Consecrated Sphinx , Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur , Psychosis Crawler and Consecrated Sphinx .

Very cool build, +1

Jimmy_Chinchila for the Proteus Staff combo to work, the deck must be creatureless. Beacon isn't bad though, so I may consider it. I'm just not sure how problematic his drawback is going to be until I have him on paper and I need as many islands as I can get to be able to cast Gush reliably. This deck doesn't want Jace either I'm afraid. He's far too slow for what this deck aims to do.

Myriad Landscape , Ash Barrens , Lonely Sandbar , Remote Isle can help thin the deck for better draws.

Reliquary Tower , Thought Vessel , Venser's Journal help with hand size.

Elixir of Immortality or Clear the Mind can shuffle in library later in game.

The new Jace. Wielder of Mysteries lets you just loop proteus staff on Fblthp for the win once you have Dramatic Reversal and Isochron Scepter . I was just wondering if this combo actually worked, nice to know it does the way I thought it did!

Thoughts on Trophy Mage for the staff and Long-Term Plans ?

April 5, 2019 12:12 p.m.

Dango says... #20

In order for the Proteus Staff combo to function, the deck itself must be creatureless. This means that cards such as Trophy Mage and Laboratory Maniac cannot be played in the 99.

Furthermore, on its surface, the new Jace does have some appeal for a deck like this. However, it would be more or less a dead card outside of the combo and have little impact at any other point in the game. USZ and Double Scepter win conditions are favorable in this regard because they are not necessarily dead draws and they feel more efficient than the new Jace.

Long-Term Plans feels a little too slow unless we have a Brainstorm or another card that digs at least three cards deep. For that I think it's too slow and too conditional.

Polymorph is not bad targeted removal, plus you can use it on Fblthp as a 1 mana draw 2
