Ayli's deathtouch does great for staving off early aggro, the deck synergy is balanced out with her perfect tempo abilities.

The tempo of Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim's ability allows any spell to have a remaining 1 or 2 mana and be able to use it to protect creatures from exile. That synergizes with the grave etb strategy and alows for short bridges between field wipes.

The deck relies on using the sacrifice and flicker to avoid stack based exile, as well as the graveyard to avoid phase based effects. Lots of ETB based creatures allows synergy within that defensive strategy.

The main combo is to tutor into Living Death by using various combos to get Rune-Scarred Demon on the battlefield. Every card plays differently depending on what is in hand, the library, the grave, and on the battlefield.

Instead of what would normally be ramp I use discard/reanimate. It allows you to get ahead of the curve the same way mana sources do, but allowing for more utility.

Whip of Erebos and Conjurer's Closet:"If a creature returned to the battlefield with Whip of Erebos would leave the battlefield for any reason, its exiled instead. However, if that creature is already being exiled, then the replacement effect wont apply. If the spell or ability that exiles it later returns it to the battlefield (as Chained to the Rocks might, for example), the creature card will return to the battlefield as a new object with no relation to its previous existence. The effects from Whip of Erebos will no longer apply to it."
