What is Puresteel Storm?

Puresteel Storm (also known as "Cheeri0s" or Puresteel Combo) is a rising-competitive Modern combo deck with consistent turn two/three wins (and a possible turn one win). At its simplest, it works up a storm count by flooding the board with zero-mana equipments like Accorder's Shield and Paradise Mantle . With Puresteel Paladin and Sram, Senior Edificer drawing us cards, the deck rarely runs out of Cheeri0s to play. Once the storm count becomes lethal, Grapeshot is cast to close out the game.

Puresteel Storm is a fairly easy deck to play, with a few nuances. Below is a guide to piloting the deck:

Taking a hand: Like most any combo decks, Puresteel Storm requires a certain type of hand in order for the game to go well. When you take your first seven, it's likely you will have either Sram, Senior Edificer or Puresteel Paladin. Any hand with Sram or Puresteel is a keeper. If you don't have puresteel or Sram in you opening hand, you should almost always mull to six. With six cards in hand, it is still fairly likely you will get Sram or Puresteel. Remember, any hand with Sram or Puresteel is a keeper. With six cards in hand, if you dont have Sram or Puresteel but you do have either Swan Song or Serum Visions (or game 2&3 if you have sideboard hoser in your hand), the hand might be keepable - use your own judgement. It depends on the matchup.

One thing this deck has going for it is a possible turn one win. The necessary hand is: Mox Opal, Sram, Senior Edificer/Puresteel Paladin, any land, and four Cheeri0s (In the example of a turn one win below, the number in brackets after each sentence will represent the current storm count).

First, play a land, followed by two cheeri0s and a Mox Opal [3]. Then, tap the mox and land to cast either Puresteel Paladin or Sram, Senior Edificer [4]. Cast your two remaining cheeri0s, drawing into more cheeri0s, playing those cheeri0s, etc. Continue chaining as many cheeri0s as you can. Eventually, you must draw into Retract and a second Mox Opal. Let's say you cast a total of six cheeri0s post-Sram/puresteel. [10].

Now that you've run out of gas, cast Mox Opal into Retract, bouncing all your artifacts [12]. Recast your seven cheeri0s [18]. If you draw into more, you can cast them - it's not necessary to win, however. Replay Mox Opal, float a red, cast another Mox Opal, sacrificing the old one, then tapping the new Mox Opal for a second red [20].

Finally, close with Grapeshot - storm count 20.

To make this combo more consistent, you can cast two Mox Opals before your first Retract, float white with them, and cast a second Puresteel Paladin/Sram, Senior Edificer. This will make you more likely to draw into more gas and will also get to your grapeshot faster. If you do do so, once you hit storm count 20 or run out of gas, use a third/fouth Mox Opal to cast Retract/Grapeshot.

Once I can finally assemble trade for and purchase all the cards in this deck (Mox Opal fetches a pretty penny these days), my goal is to start taking this deck to as much off-line standardized play as possible. Once I have enough tournament-level experience under my belt, hopefully this will become a fully-fledged primer for Puresteel Storm.
