Maybe consider Molten Birth over Goblin Rally ?

2x Legion Loyalist May also be a good option over Weapon Surge

I like this deck a lot. I'm hoping my booster box nets me some Purphoros and Temple of Triumph so I can built this deck for cheaper.

I thought about Molten Birth , but Goblin Rally seems to fit the curve better. If I can get a turn 4 Purphoros, then a turn 5 Goblin Rally is perfect. But I'll see how it plays out in actual games, and if Goblin Rally ends up being a dead card most of the time, I'll try switching it out. I really wish Siege-Gang Commander was in standard though haha.

I like the idea of Legion Loyalist though. I had Weapon Surge in there mainly because it's an instant so it works well with Young Pyromancer , but I suppose it's probably better to have Legion Loyalist out and just use Purphoros' ability to give my creatures +1/+0

areClifftop Retreat and/or Arid Mesa still legal post-rotation? I think both beat the temple by miles

Unfortunately, they are not. Clifftop Retreat is rotating out in a couple weeks, and Arid Mesa hasn't been in standard for a while. I would love to use those, but for now Temple of Triumph is the best option. Besides, scrying 1 at the beginning of the game helps out a lot if you're looking for that Purphoros or extra land that you need, so I don't mind having 2 of those in there. If they prove to be really useful, I might up it to 4.

Scry also helps you lategame, when you need to find a specific topdeck card to finish off your opp.

After playing sealed at the Prerelease I would heavily suggest using Evangel of Heliod . Now he is rather costly at two white and four colorless, however, the format has been altered drastically so we don't see much action until the later turns of the game. When he enters the battlefield he drops 1/1 soldiers equal to your devotion to white.

Evangel of Heliod is definitely a card I'm considering for this deck. But, I think I like Elspeth, Sun's Champion and Aurelia, the Warleader better in the 6 drop spot. Evangel is only good if I already have Purphoros, God of the Forge , and even then Elspeth would be better. The only time Evangel is better than Elspeth is if I have a Boros Reckoner out as well, so it can hit them for 12 damage, but that's such a rare situation that it doesn't seem worth it. Elspeth and Aurelia are both really strong on their own, even without Purphoros, which is why I'm keeping those in there.

I actually like Ogre Battledriver , but I couldn't really find a spot for it in here. I might take out Assemble the Legion for it, since Assemble is a really slow card, and I usually want to be winning the game by turn ~6. I'll have to actually test the deck out first to see which one fits better.

HappehNinja says... #10

You could try lowering one Purphoros, God of the Forge (he's legendary), one Magma Jet , one Chandra's Phoenix and a Boros Reckoner for four Ogre Battledriver . Also, you might want to include Shock either on the mainboard (preferably) or the sideboard.

forgive the intrusion, but doesn't purphoros and battledriver contest each other for the same role in the deck? I mean, both 4cc, both delivering powerful bonuses when you pop creatures into play.

Not saying they wont get along, I'll bet they get along splendidly, provided you can still spam enough creatures with the deck.. But you will probably find they're doing the same thing for you, so 4 battledrivers (7 4cc 'general' archetypes total) might be over the top

I was actually thinking the exact same thing, bjarkov. That's why I only really want 2 battledrivers in here. I'm just not sure yet what to take out for them. I actually kinda want to keep Assemble the Legion in. It's slow, but as soon as I get it out with Purphoros or Battledriver, I just have to sit there and survive as I slowly win the game.

I'm thinking of maybe taking out 1 Chandra's Phoenix and 1 Boros Reckoner for 2 Battledrivers. I want to keep 4 Magma Jet s in here, since it is somewhat of a combo deck, digging deeper through my library is always super helpful.

You should still lower Purphoros, God of the Forge to two, though... he's legendary.

September 24, 2013 3:59 p.m.

DarkDucky says... #14

I think I'll keep at it 3 for now, but I may lower it later. For now, most of my gameplan relies on having a Purphoros out, so I want to be drawing it every game if possible. Also, having a 2nd Purphoros in hand isn't entirely a dead card. If my devotion is up, it counts as a creature ETB for another 2 damage before I sac the other copy, or if I have an Ogre Battledriver out, it's 2 damage plus a hasty indestructible 8/5. Plus, with Annul and Fade into Antiquity running around, I'd like to have more of a chance to recast him if he doesn't stick.

With the old legendary rule, I would definitely lower it to 2, but to me it seems worth it to have 3.

This is my version of the deck, but I built it before I saw yours:

Your version had a few cards I forgot about.

Nice, it seems like a lot of people are making the same (or very similar decks), but independently from each other. I guess the synergy between Purphoros, God of the Forge and Assemble the Legion is just too obvious to pass up. It'll be interesting to see how many of these I'll run into at FNM

If I was going to put in a 3 CMC token generating spell, it would probably be Molten Birth over Hive Stirrings , just because of the possibility of getting it back. Wake the Reflections doesn't really do enough in this deck, since all the tokens I make are just 1/1, spending 1 mana and a card just to get one more 1/1 creature doesn't seem worth it to me. Also it's just a dead card if I don't have any tokens on the field, which most of the time I don't

A red devotion deck using purhoros and not a fanatic of mogis in site? You need the fanatical Minotaur him and purphoros make for a deadly combo!

October 3, 2013 10:08 a.m.

DarkDucky says... #20

Fanatic of Mogis is definitely something I've been considering for this deck. If I could go Frostburn Weird into Boros Reckoner into Fanatic of Mogis , that would be pretty much perfect. The only problem is I have no idea what to take out for it. Any suggestions?

October 3, 2013 10:30 a.m.

I was thinking -1 magma jet and -2 stormbreath dragons then +3 fanatic's! I know the dragons are a great top deck win con but so are the fanatic's if you can stop your opponent clearing your board you could do an easy 7 + from him just entering the battlefield

October 3, 2013 11:38 a.m.

DarkDucky says... #22

I kinda prefer Stormbreath Dragon over Fanatic of Mogis though... It just seems like more of a consistent card to me. Although the Fanatic can hit for a lot more when it comes in, the dragon will stick around longer and be more useful over the next few turns after it hits the board. The dragon is also much better than the fanatic if I have nothing else on the board. If I was going for the fast burn/aggro deck, then fanatic would definitely be better, but this is more of a midrange, win by turn 7 or 8 kind of deck.

Magma Jet is also another card that I wouldn't really want to take out. It gets rid of early threats and lets me dig for what I need, which helps me significantly on getting into the late game.

October 3, 2013 12:40 p.m.

The stormbreaths are good but there 1 more mana and can be doom bladed etc etc the fanatics just needed to hit the battlefield with a full board then swing with your dudes and bam game over

Yea, this gets there! +1 from me. Just 2 suggestions: -1 Azorius Charm +1 Sphinx's Revelation . Also, Wear / Tear does nothing in my experience...you may want to replace it with something else in the side...possibly Ash Zealot against agro. 2/2 first strike is nasty....or Rest in Peace is an option since the GY is still a playable zone This deck causes problems in the ways that mine doesn't. I think you have strong matches against everything. Good job

October 10, 2013 5:32 p.m.

DarkDucky says... #25

I like the idea of a 2nd Sphinx's Revelation , but I might want to take out a Boros Charm instead of Azorius Charm . I'll have to test the deck out first, and see what my meta is like before I make that decision. I like Wear / Tear because it deals with Detention Sphere and problem artifacts like Whip of Erebos , but really the only thing it does that Detention Sphere doesn't is deal with other Detention Sphere s. Maybe I could take it out for Pithing Needle , to deal with AEtherling and planeswalkers... Again I'll have to see what my meta is like first.

Thanks!
