Sideboard

Maybeboard

Intro:

I am the Often overlook crazy cat... Lord? anyway i like cats and as such i made this and other deck that has cats on them...

anyway. unfortunately. Cat's are not Particularly good or powerful on modern, but is what my friends play, and to be fair some cards i like are not Pioneer legal... why wizards!? or they ban them cuz the crazy cat lady keep throwing them (in pioneer Saheeli Rai ):

I made this deck around the idea of a cat Tribal + boots equipment ( Lightning Greaves ).

  • Since Lightning Greaves have equip "free", they are nice, however Equipment can only be activated as Sorcery... But there is a CAT!, Leonin Shikari , she is key to make this puss in boot's pun a (More) viable deck in modern than just a casual pun deck, and allows to protect cats from removal.and also give them haste...

we have 3 things:

Authority of the Consuls helps a lot. Not only allows us to gain life. It also Slows our enemy and frustrates them to no end if their strategy plays around of having haste as this card force the creatures to enter tapped. so creatures such Lightning Skelemental becomes useless.

HOWEVER if your opponent is not creature centric you might want to sideboard something else. but my question if that is the case is, what is your opponent playing? red burn? (to booted cats is not a good idea, so go to the face? in which case we should think about the layline ( Leyline of Sanctity to avoid dying to aggro burns... )

well besides her gorgeous art Auriok Champion ... here is why:

Healer of the Pride is a Cat that give us Life, HOWEVER she is too slow/expensive(CMC 4) with little return (2 gain per creature and only from our side of the board), besides she dies to Lightning Bolt ... what a huge waste of mana!

After research, I found that Healer of the Pride has superior alternatives:

gain 1 life for ANY creature entering the battlefield not only on my side of the board (so any creature triggers the effect)

life gain on our side of the board:

  • Impassioned Orator (not a cat, nor does he look like a cat person... hmm)
  • Ajani's Welcome (enchantment) (ajani a cat, yes it fits the requirements but with the only on our side caveat)

So I had to bend a little my "only cats rule" (as i want this deck to more fun and maybe somewhat competitive rather than just thematic ), hence I exchange her for a non cat (but arguably 'a Cat Lady')

Auriok Champion who cmc is 2() (1 more than Soul's Attendant , Soul Warden or Ajani's Welcome , but with added benefit that she has sort of "removal protection" (protection from Black & Red !!))

Now we may argue, Essence Warden , Soul's Attendant OR Soul Warden may enter turn 1... yes. but just as fast can be removed by Lightning Bolt , Disfigure , Fatal Push , Tragic Slip . from red/black aggro decks. which are plentiful. so i think the extra cost is worth. we also have the extra assistance from Authority of the Consuls

However since Essence Warden , Soul's Attendant and Soul Warden art seems to match a "Cat Lady" then can go to the maybe or sideboard...

  • Lightning Greaves : the cat boots we talk about :P, but also reason why them instead of for example Swiftfoot Boots basically they are really similar(with the caveat Shroud vs Hexproof) but Swiftfoot have Equip cost VS Lightning begin "free". both give haste that make the creatures that enter the field able to attack or activate abilities. and shroud protect against targeted spells(even our spells)... however when we include Leonin Shikari this boots becomes a teleporting equipment and allow to protect all our creatures from target attacks (as long we have either enough boots on the field or the spell does not target more than a single target) (and allow us to change the boot at almost any time) (and here is where the 0 cost is important otherwise we are mana dependent)

  • Coat of Arms : this artifact is a bit costly. However it buff our cats A lot. if we had on the board Kemba, Kha Regent for a few turns with the boot's on at upkeep well we got a few 2/2 Cat tokens. and if Regal Caracal is on the board we got ourselves 2 1/1 cat tokens. so with Coat of Arms we can use this tokens to do heavy attacks as they get buffed by each other cat on the board...

    • alternative the same can be said about Stoneforge Masterwork but only for 1 creature at the time but with 2 benefits, lower cost to cast, and can be used by Kemba, Kha Regent to create 2 tokens per turn. then equip other cat, and do heavy damage. (but needs more testing)
  • Chariot of Victory : a way to deal with problematic creatures (such with those with death touch or lifelink on the other side of the board) and when i have run out or do not have removal for example to deal with someone with 4 copies of Wren's Run Packmaster and i have alredy exile 1 or 2 copies, and exile Tolsimir, Friend to Wolves

maybe's:

final note.

if adding Path to Exile please note:

using this same reasoning we can add Worship but please note it has to be the one from Guideon's book cuz this is the one where the art has the Cat god begin Worship

any other suggestions are welcome.

Updates Add

exchange Nature's Way in favor of Ram Through as per it is #1 a instant. and it has a similar effect. so overall a better spell. if we add a way to add Trample for example via Shadowspear or Chariot of Victory we will deal a lot of damage with for example a buffed ajani pride.also we could include Pridemalkin that will default our ajani cats with counters with trample.
