Put the Cats Amongst the Pigeons

Pioneer Budget Cats GW (Selesnya) Tribal

BRG24

Sideboard

A cute cat tribal deck. A quick run-down of the list:

  • Sacred Cat and Garrison Cat are both solid one drops, and the ability to generate a second body off each of them means they are great tempo plays early on.

  • Fleecemane Lion is a monstrous (literally) cat to play out early, and then causes your opponent all sorts of problems into the late game if you ever make it monstrous. A great early threat that is difficult to remove and trade into well, especially once your cat lords start hitting the board.

  • Adorned Pouncer is a another great cat, the double strike really gets out of hand quite quickly. Then, you can bring it back as a 4/4, and with some buffs can easily close out a game for you.

  • Ajani's Pridemate, another solid two-drop, will just grow throughout the game since lots of the cats have lifelink. A pretty basic beat stick, but one that will cause your opponent problems.

  • New from M21, Feline Sovereign is the first cat lord in the deck. The anthem is the main reason for playing her, but the incidental removal she provides can come in useful in some matchups.

  • Kaheera, the Orphanguard is another lord, and the vigilance that she gives is really useful to us, making our swings that much safer since we aren’t leaving ourselves open defensively when we do swing out as this deck wants to do. We are also running Kaheera as our companion for this deck, so we should have fairly regular access to her.

  • Cubwarden and Leonin Warleader both let us go a little bit wider on the board. Cubwarden particularly is nice, since he can mutate onto an Adorned Pouncer which can end up being a massive on board threat. The tokens having lifelink is also pretty useful with our Ajani's Pridemate

  • The final cat is Regal Caracal, and she does everything we want her to. She buffs our board, which is hopefully quite big at this point, brings even more bodies with her, and gives lifelink to everything, bolstering us and helping the Pridemate.

  • What would a cat deck be without the greatest cat of all - Ajani. Here we are running two versions of him, Ajani, Strength of the Pride and Ajani, the Greathearted. Strength of the Pride allows us to make yet more Pridemates, bolster us with lifegain where necessary, or potentially reset our opponents if needed. Greathearted is yet another source of the all important vigilance, as well as a very significant buff to our entire board to help us close out games. The option of lifegain can also help in a pinch, or even be really useful with our Pridemates.

  • A lot of these cats make token friends, and as such we are running Anointed Procession to make those effects even stronger. Having Ajani, Strength of the Pride make two Pridemates, or eternalising to make two 4/4s with double strike is amazing value, and hence earns a spot in the list.

  • This type of deck is vulnerable to board wipes, so we are running Unbreakable Formation to try and reduce this weakness. It also can be used very aggressively, to give your board a boost to close out a game.

  • Return of the Wildspeaker acts as both the decks finisher, putting the final bits of damage through by giving a massive buff to our board, and the card that gives us staying power in more drawn out matches with the card draw mode. This can draw us absurd amounts of cards in some situations, especially if we have large Ajani's Pridemate on board.

If you want to build a cat deck yourself, a few other cards worth considering might be:

  • Brimaz, King of Oreskos is one of the strongest cats in the game and if you can afford him should almost always make it into a cat deck. Unfortunately, he was cut here for budget reasons since he is a little pricey.

  • Pride Sovereign is another solid cat that can easily be huge and pump out lots more cats. However, the exert part of its text I find can be too slow for this deck, so he didn’t make the cut.

  • Heroic Intervention might be considered a better version of Unbreakable Formation, since it is a cheaper way to protect your board, but personally I prefer the ability to push through extra damage.

Any suggestions would be really welcome here, and I hope you enjoy the deck.
