Today Hands got to test against one of my janky decks I simply call Stormtide.

Hands starting hand: 3 Swamp , Black Cat , Devour Flesh , Waste Not , Master of the Feast

Stormtide starting hand: 2 Island , Hypnotic Siren , Quickling , Thassa, God of the Sea , Dakra Mystic , Whelming Wave

Hands rolls a 1 on a D20, and Storm gets a 4. Storm will take first.

S1: Island , Dakra Mystic , pass

H1: draws Swamp . Swamp , pass (no first turn Thoughtseize this time)

S2: draws Omenspeaker . Island , Omenspeaker , revealing 2 Island off the scry (excitement). One will stay on top. Dakra Mystic , with nothing better to do, swings for 1 (H-19), pass.

H2: draws Swamp . Swamp , Black Cat , pass

S3: draws Island . Island , Thassa, God of the Sea , pass

H3: draws Swamp (well this is going nowhere fast). Swamp , Waste Not , pass

S4: upkeep scry reveals Island , goes to bottom. Draws Military Intelligence . Island , Military Intelligence , pass

H4: draws Mutavault (man, all this land). Mutavault , pass. EoT, Storm flashes in Quickling , returning Omenspeaker .

S5: scry reveals Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx . Sure, well keep that. Draws Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx , plays it for turn. Omenspeaker , revealing Archetype of Imagination (ha) and an Island . Archetype can stay. Quickling and Thassa, God of the Sea (now active), swing in, triggering Military Intelligence , drawing the Archetype of Imagination . Thassa makes herself unblockable (dont want that Black Cat blocking), making the total damage dealt 7 (H-12). Pass

H5: draws Hero's Downfall . Swamp , pass

S6: scry reveals Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx , goes to the bottom. Draws Thassa, God of the Sea . Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx taps for 5, another island, and out comes Archetype of Imagination . Before combat Dakra Mystic checks the top cards. Storm has a Hypnotic Siren , Hands has a Devour Flesh . Both go to the grave. Storm feels confident with all these flyers, so he swings with Quickling , Thassa, God of the Sea , and Omenspeaker . Military Intelligence trigger, drawing an Island . Hero's Downfall makes quick work of Archetype of Imagination , Black Cat blocks the Thassa, and an animated Mutavault stops the Omenspeaker . Only the Quickling hits (H-10). Black Cat cause Storm to discard Whelming Wave at random, Waste Not trigger, drawing another Black Cat . Storm plays an Island for turn, pass

H6: draws Mutavault . Swamp , Master of the Feast , pass

S7: scry reveals Master of Waves . Draws Master of Waves . Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx for 5, 2 more islands, and Hypnotic Siren attempts to bestow itself on Master of the Feast . Now we cant have any of that. Hands decides to Devour Flesh his own creature (H-15) to prevent Storm from taking it. Precombat, Dakra Mystic . Storm has Omenspeaker , Hands has Duress . They meet the graveyards. Thassa, God of the Sea and Quickling swing for 7 (H-8), Military Intelligence nets the boss monster: Stormtide Leviathan . Pass.

H7: draws Devour Flesh (still no good discard cards) Mutavault , Black Cat . Pass

S8: scry reveals Chasm Skulker . Draws Chasm Skulker . Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx for 6, 2 islands, and out comes Stormtide Leviathan . Dakra Mystic reveals Hypnotic Siren and a Swamp . Both are drawn. Quickling and Hypnotic Siren swing for 3 (H-5), Military Intelligence draws Dakra Mystic . Pass

H8: draws Waste Not . Swamp , Waste Not . Hands has enough mana to animate both Mutavault and use Devour Flesh . Lets see how this next turn plays out

S9: scry reveals Master of Waves . Hmma decision right here. If Storm decides to keep the Master of Waves , his hand will be nothing but creatures, thus giving Hands zombie tokens should the Black Cat somehow die before combat this turn. However, those tokens wont last long under the onslaught of Stormtide Leviathan . Draws Master of Waves . Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx for 9, the first Master of Waves , producing 10 tokens, followed by another Master of Waves , producing 11 tokens, totaling 21 3/2 tokens (gross). Precombat, Hands uses Devour Flesh on their Black Cat , netting 1 life (H-6), and causing Storm to discard Chasm Skulker and random, thus making 2 zombie tokens. But in vain. Thassa, God of the Sea makes Stormtide Leviathan unblockable for lethal.

Conclusion: more discard, if possible? You only have 14 sources, and they never seem to show up when Waste Not is in play, or vice versa, you have plenty of discard but no Waste Not . Also Black Cat has been an underwhelming card when testing. It's literally only been a chump blocker, which I guess in some cases might be good.

Black Cat has made me happy enough as a chumper that I think the kitten can stay, but perhaps Stain the Mind could be sideboard... for something bringing in more discard effect as brokendwarf suggests. Or just 2 Bile Blight mainboarded. I'm not sure.

Anyone else playtesting this? How is it working for you?

omnipath could you please look at my Waste Not deck. im looking to make it like yours but now that Khans is out id like suggestions. Also if you would splash a color in this what would it be and why?

Great deck here mate! I've been planning on building a discard deck for STD format myself, and this looks like a good one. Any changes or swaps now that KTK has come in and RTR has rotated?
