Moved Barrage of Expendables from the sideboard to maybe to get down to 15. I really like what it did for the deck so the move might not be permanent.

Does anyone have any thoughts on Epic Experiment ? With Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx I could pop it off for 8-10 mana and do some serious damage. It'd be a one of and could be an alternate wincon.

I love the deck and I'm a big fan of red, but I'm just wondering, why did you pick Shock over Magma Jet ? Seeing as how it's only 1 more colourless mana, it seems like the scry would be worth it.

Casting turn and burn together counts as casting one spell, so it will not trigger the pyromancer twice!

Shock is especially helpful when on the draw or when casting multiple spells to abuse Young Pyromancer + Purphoros, God of the Forge for large amounts of damage. Turn 1 it allows me to hit Elvish Mystic before it can be used or can get rid of Soldier of the Pantheon or a Rakdos Cackler . Or at the end of their 2nd turn killing their Scavenging Ooze , Pack Rat , Lotleth Troll , or Tidebinder Mage is way more valuable than waiting an extra turn and scrying 2 when I'd rather be dropping a Young Pyromancer . Magma Jet hasn't done a good job clearing early creatures, 2 damage to the face is not enough for 2 mana, and it's too slow for this deck.

@nielsbass True, I just read over the rulings on Gatherer. Thanks for the heads up.

Nivmagus Elemental can't counter their counters though...

November 20, 2013 4:18 p.m.

He doesn't literally counter them... If the opponent counters a burn spell of mine I can exile the spell and add 2 +1/1 counters to Nivmagus Elemental and in effect counter their counter by turning my spell into counters and their's fizzling. It still triggers Young Pyromancer and helps keep the pressure on.

Dude, you are running burn. Please run Mizzium Mortars and Anger of the Gods Also, Planar Cleansing is valid boardwipe.

So I'm a dummy. Thought the tournament was at 12 and missed it. Bummer.

Lifegain is your bane. Skullcrack maybe in sideboard and get 1 or 2 Anger of the Gods in main board.

December 8, 2013 7:51 p.m.

Against lifegain I will speed up the deck and try to kill them before lifegain becomes a factor. Most lifegain played in standard is at the 5 cmc or above so there's a good chance that we can end it before then. Don't think there is room for it in the sideboard. Thanks for the input.

Firstly, I think 21 lands might be just short. I just tested against my black/blue and you were mana screwed 3/5 games,

In my experience (I play a lot of Boros), Purphoros is really better on paper than in games. Most of the time, his enchantment doesn't see much play, because as a fast aggro/burn deck you're gonna play a lot of your creatures before you can play him out. Also, if you face any kind of creature removal you'll probably not see the devotion that much.

As far as your matchup vs Mono Blue - Chained to the rocks and Last Breath . Last breath takes out NVS and Master of waves. Chained MoW and all the elementals die. Anger of the Gods might be worth looking into as well.

Assemble the Legion is nice in the sideboard against control.

I don't buy into Chandra, Pyromaster either. At 4 mana she's too slow. You also don't have any 1 drops, which is strange for aggro. Rakdos Cackler and Legion Loyalist are good in this spot.

December 9, 2013 9:57 a.m.

I'm running a midrange deck rather than aggro. I have Rakdos Cackler s in the sideboard for when I do want a more aggro approach. But in a lot of matchups they can be a dead card. Chandra, Pyromaster is a good planeswalker. All of her abilites are relevant and card advantage in red is nothing to scoff at.

Against mono blue I have found Chained to the Rocks lackluster because of they run a lot of bounce spells. Anger of the Gods is something I'm trying out for this match up and the mirror match. I play more burn and less early permanents, try to burn off their early devotion and then establish mine.

Purphoros, God of the Forge is solid and is usually a creature. 6/5 for 4 mana is why I play him. I've considered playing Stormbreath Dragon . I don't own any and the 5 cmc concerns me. Also 4 power is kind of weak.

21 lands has worked real well for me. I tend to get flooded more than starved, Hammer of Purphoros helps out with this. I really only need 4 lands which I hit consistently. 2 lands in an opening hand is perfect for this deck. I've played 1 land hands on the draw when I have Temple of Triumph and it works out usually. I wonder if 20 is viable sometimes.

Thanks for the advice.

I have a pretty similiar deck:

Maybe something in the middle is the sweet spot?

I run four Stormbreath Dragon and two Aurelia, the Warleader as the finishers, while Purphoros, God of the Forge is really in the middle of the curve. Also, instead of Ash Zealot I have Burning-Tree Emissary for sneaky devotion plays. I run a bit less burn than you, but mainboard four Chained to the Rocks

I think both Wear / Tear and Assemble the Legion deserve sideboard spots, and as for Madcap Skills I found as soon as I enchanted a creature with it, it would die. Also, I find the Hammer of Purphoros somewhat slow and redundant (but more of my creatures have haste than yours).

Anyway, I like the deck! +1 from me, and please check out mine!

1-3 drop at an IQ after going 1-3 at a sealed PTQ. Played very badly today, sloppy as fuck.

with all this devotion, 4 nykthos is a must. if you double draw, you just tap one for a ton of mana, play the other (sacking the tapped one) and tap the new one for a ton more mana. drawing two nykthos is awesome, not to mention extremely helpful.

I agree. Need to trade for the last one.
