Why Mardu Superfriends? Show

When Conspiracy: Take the Crown released, it debuted the greatest Magic multiplayer mechanic of all time: the Monarch. One of my favorite characters, Marchesa, became the signature card and the set contained further inspiration for how to build her deck: Kaya, Ghost Assassin and Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast asked the question "what about Mardu planeswalker control?" Mardu has the best board wipes and since Queen doesn't have to stay alive for you to keep the monarchy, often the safest thing to do is just keep the board empty. Only haste creatures or animated permanents can take the crown from you (and we're playing quite a few living lands and artifacts to take back the crown with ourselves.) Planeswalkers love wipes to protect them, too. Add to that, if a player has only one free attacker against you, they have to choose going after a walker or taking the monarch, not both. And if the monarch is stolen from you, then your other opponents have choices to make when attacking: do they attack your walkers in the hopes of keeping them down or do they steal the monarchy for some card advantage?

The Queen's Strategy Show

We run lots of good 1-2 CMC mana rocks to help land a turn two or three Queen, as the monarchy is very important to for maintaining card draw throughout the game. The goal of this deck is to appear innocuous at first and eventually overwhelm your last opponent or two standing with massive board advantage. Sometimes, we attack in the early game, politically trading the monarchy back and forth with potential allies and accumulating some Assassin tokens. This can also be good for getting early grudges started between our opponents as we are never bashing as hard as aggro decks can. In fact, it is often worthwhile to let a weaker opponent steal the monarchy for 1-3 damage if a player coming later in the turn order has a big monster to attack with; better for that Ulamog to go at them than you.

Eventually the board gets wiped, walkers start ticking up in loyalty, and ultimates start happening. Between the monarch and planeswalkers using their abilities every turn like free spells, the deck feels like it has a lot more card draw than it appears to have.

The deck is good at maintaining the Monarchy and keeping itself alive but many of the Mardu-colored planeswalkers don't have game-ending ultimates - instead they make it much harder for everyone else to win. So we need some more ways to close the game out and with all the board wipes we run, reanimator is a solid plan. Alternatively, you can play a game where biding your time and staying safe is the best course, waiting for just the right moment to unleash a backbreaking Primevals' Glorious Rebirth or Command the Dreadhorde.

New Card potentials Show

Kaldheim is coming with some real bangers. Here's what I'm hyped for:

Kaya the Inexorable and Valki, God of Lies  /Tibalt, Cosmic Imposter - Now this is podracing. Once again Kaya is showing up in the same set as a Rakdos planeswalker and I am hyped. Kaya's +1 allows you to recoup a loss from boardwipes and provide crucial clutch blocker against a targeted removal spell, her -3 can answer nearly anything, and her -7 leans directly into the legendary reanimation them of the deck. Valki/Tibalt is an interesting beast; I doubt I would cast the Valki side very often, though it is not bad and could be a blowout if you know a critical creature is in an opponent's hand. The Tibalt side is just nuts, providing massive card advantage and answers. Notably, Tibalt cannot be reanimated on his planeswalker side with Primevals' or Command the Dreadhorde, which is his only real downside.

Also, from Commander Legends, I haven't yet tested Triumphant Reckoning but it could potentially be good. Similar to Primevals' but can also snag artifacts and enchantments. The mana cost is a big ask though and I am not sure I like this more than Command the Dreadhorde.

Individual Card Notes Show

Ancient Tomb - Probably our best land, turn-one Tomb into a Signet guarantees turn-two Queen which is the nuts. The other way to achieve this is turn-one Sol Ring into any mana rock. I don't own a Mana Crypt but that card would probably go in if I did.

No Mercy, Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts, Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs, Righteous Aura, Delaying Shield, Solitary Confinement, Ghostly Prison, Archon of Coronation, and to a lesser extent, Gisela, Blade of Goldnight - These cards are strong for maintaining the monarchy. It becomes taxing or impossible to steal our precious card draw when one of these are out, and it also helps bring the Luminarch Ascension online. Notably, I have found that Delaying Shield seems to encourage some opponents to attack and pile on counters, which can be devastating if we can't find a way to deal with the trigger (though you can kill the Shield with something like Chaos Warp before your upkeep.)

Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, Elspeth, Sun's Champion, Toxic Deluge, Merciless Eviction, Austere Command, Blasphemous Act, Slaughter the Strong, Chandra's Ignition, Akroma's Vengeance - Mardu has the most versatile board wipes in the game, it's telling that both Damnation and Wrath of God have been rotated out because they just weren't needed. Targeting Queen Marchesa with Ignition results in all creatures taking lethal deathtouch damage and leaving her alive to take the crown. An amazing boardwipe in this deck

The living lands Inkmoth Nexus, Blinkmoth Nexus, Shambling Vent, Lavaclaw Reaches Forbidding Watchtower - These pull double duty making mana and taking back the monarch. Many a turn you will wipe the board, animate one of these, and take back your rightful crown. Watchtower pulls double duty as an attack inhibitor and monarch stealer in one, it's been a lot more impressive than it seems on paper. And late game Lavaclaw Reaches can get really big to polish off an opponent.

Chandra, Torch of Defiance, Karn, Scion of Urza, Kaya, Ghost Assassin, Ob Nixilis Reignited, card:Sorin, Gim Nemesis, Liliana, Dreadhorde General, Ugin, the Ineffable - Aside from the Monarch itself, these walkers are your recurring source of card draw. Because the deck is full of haymaker spells, you are often netting virtual card advantage all the time, but actual card draw is highly dependent of the crown resting safely upon thy brow.

Primevals' Glorious Rebirth and Yawgmoth's Vile Offering - The legendary sorceries really shine in a deck that has so many planeswalkers who stick around to cast them, and with so many legendary creatures as well. Originally, the deck had Urza's Ruinous Blast also but it turns out that it was not great at dealing with threats in a format like Commander where so many permanents are legendary, and it wiped a lot of our valuable permanents. If you want a Ruinous Blast effect, I'd go with Akroma's Vengeance, which still doesn't touch walkers and has the added benefit of cycling; testing has borne out how versatile cycling Nev's Disk is.

Angrath, the Flame-Chained - I was uncertain about Angrath for a long time but it's become apparent that he is solid. His +1 ends up protecting him a lot in the long run, stripping our opponents of options to deal with him and providing a solid source of repeating damage. His -3 is very situational, but having stolen a Blightsteel Colossus and a card:Kozilek, the Butcher of Truth with him now, I can see the value in it. The ultimate is one of the few in Mardu colors which can actually kill players so all around I'm glad to have him in.

Sun Titan - I put Titan in and it really encourages running more fetches and possibly Crucible of Words. It's a nice synergy with Mind Stone, Animate Dead, Necromancy, Aura of Silence and Daretti

Ugin, the Ineffable - Opened a foil in my prerelease and he is very impressive. He makes all of our mana rocks free, creates defenders that draw us cards when they die, and can spot remove immediately.

Liliana, Dreadhorde General - Just like Ugin, her +1 makes a token that draws you a card when it dies. Her minus is a solid board wipe (which might draw you some cards) and her ultimate is REAL, and color spread with few "I Win" ultimates (unlike blue and green) this is definite I Win button.

Command the Dreadhorde - This card is very powerful, akin to Primeval's but it can also reanimate opposing creatures. And depending on the cards we play, we can even dodge the damage (with Archon of Coronation Righteous Aura or Gisela, Blade of Goldnight or Solitary Confinement or The Wanderer. In any case, the lifeloss can be substantial, so it's not guaranteed good.

Notable Cards Not Included Show

Ajani Steadfast, Disrupt Decorum, Gideon Jura & Sorin, Solemn Visitor - These cards were in the deck at one point and constantly on the chopping block. Ajani's +1 makes Queen impossible to block effectively and he can ultimate quickly, making you and your walkers much harder to deal with. His loyalty-adding ability is interesting and sometimes you pay 3W just to surprise add that last loyalty to ultimate someone else. Since all three of his abilities are useful, I kept him in for a long time. Disrupt Decorum is so much fun but I find myself rarely casting it anymore, mostly because it has anti-synergy with all the board wipes. All three of Gideon's abilities are relevant for protecting other walkers, and being able to animate post-boardwipe to steal back the monarchy is nice, but more and more he feels like too little for the 5 mana + card investment, so I've swapped him for Sun Titan. Sorin ultimates so fast and once he has, it becomes much harder for certain decks to beat you. However his minor abilities don't synergize well in the deck and if drawn at the wrong time, he's a dead card. I've cut him for now.

Djeru, With Eyes Open, Thalia's Lancers, Call the Gatewatch, and Deploy the Gatewatch - Because Mardu walkers are just generally good value and not silver bullets, I have found that I rarely wanted to spend mana and a card to find a particular one. Sure sometimes you need that Ugin board wipe or that Karn targeted removal, but just as often you just want a walker and don't particularly like the opportunity cost of spending mana. Djeru is in an especially strange spot because his 4/3 body with vigilance doesn't make him a great protector of walkers, and his damage reducing ability isn't particularly relevant with such an easily-killed body. He is legendary, which isn't nothing in a deck with legendary sorceries, but he's unexciting. Lancers can get any Planeswalker, nearly any creature, the two legendary sorceries plus the Chain Veil and Kor Haven, but again a 4/4 first striker isn't exactly accomplishing much in commander; instead, Sidisi is in their place (bonus, she's legendary and can get any card she wants AND keep it a secret.) Call and Deploy are both overcosted, and Deploy is especially bad in a deck running only 14 walkers (one analysis of Deploy in commander stated you need a minimum of 25 walkers to hope to hit two when you cast deploy.)

The Courts Court of Ambition, Court of Ire, Court of Grace - These are real payoffs for holding the monarch and are great ways to recover it mid-game if it's proving difficult to stick a creature. Possibly the best Monarch payoff.

Archon of Coronation - M'lady, this card is nuts. Not only does it protect the crown it can also allow for insanity when coupled with Command the Dreadhorde

Cards to Consider Show

Cards listed in the Sideboard section are in contest for consideration

Authority of the Consuls - This deck hates haste on opposing creatures, we like nice predictable combat steps. Blind Obedience is great here, so maybe I should add a second one.

Arena Rector - Once I get one I'll have to test it. Getting Ugin or Karn for free is nice. Would definitely encourage me to add Phyrexian Tower and possibly High Market to my build.

Phyrexian Tower and High Market - We don't want Queen getting stolen, we don't like Homeward Path spoiling our reanimation fun, and Angrath's -3 becomes a lot keener with a sacrifice outlet. Plus we have a few ways to make token creatures that we can then feed to these lands for value.

Thran Temporal Gateway, Loyal Retainers and Weatherlight - As this deck embraces more and more historic permanents (read:all PWs, most creatures, and all the artifacts) then card filtering and instant mana cheating both become more exciting.

Bruna, the Fading Light  , Gisela, the Broken Blade  , Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, Linvala, Keeper of Silence, Baird, Steward of Argive, Tariel, Reckoner of Souls - All of these Legends are solid in their own right and give the deck more value towards the goal of protecting the crown and creating proactive threats.

Torment of Hailfire - This card seems to single-handedly unseat both Exsanguinate and Debt to the Deathless as a premiere black finisher spell. Once I get one I will definitely test it out; combining our board-wipes with this means it can hit for a lot and close out the game.

Guardian Idol - The deck loves a 2cmc mana rock in the opening hand to enable turn 3 Queen, and this one has the added bonus of surviving board wipes so that it can animate and steal back the monarchy. Can also surprise animate to chump for a walker. I've been pretty happy with it so far, despite making only colorless mana. If I owned a Mana Crypt I would consider it over this.

Mirage Mirror and Mimic Vat - These two artifacts give you a lot of value over a long enough timeline and both can provide board-wipe-proof ways to steal the monarchy back.

Potential Alternative Queen strategies Show

Pillowfort - the style of deck I am least interested in is Pillowfort, building a bunch more protective permanents into the deck to totally lock down any threats to me. That deck would ultimately need to rely on a combo to win, something I am not terribly interested in (I prefer the current PW path)

Greater Reanimation Focus - The deck is currently a PW control deck with some reanimator pay-offs. However, shifting the deck toward more big creature combats and more reanimation could be a strong avenue. This build would probably play cards like Dark Deal and Reforge the Soul to help fill the grave with potential. This deck would also run more big threats of its own, specifically big legends (Glorious Rebirth is so dang good.) Likely this would have a strong Dragon theme, since there are so many good dragon payoffs in Mardu. Speaking of which...

Dragon Queen - Thanks to Sarkhan the Masterless, there is a strong incentive to build a hybrid PW/Dragon themed deck. Dragons are great for winning the game, they are great at protecting the monarch, there is even a Monarch dragon in Skyline Despot. This static ability, plus the 'animate all your PWs' ability definitely ask the question: is there a build of this deck which focuses on Dragons and Walkers? For one thing, Sarkhan the Mad and Sarkhan, Fireblood would get a lot more exciting under this play style, and Nahiri, the Harbinger now serves a real solid ultimate; for another, there are a lot of powerful dragons, many of which are legendary (keying off the very powerful Primevals' Glorious Rebirth) that all get more powerful in a build that was already leaning a bit into reanimator (now I can run Patriarch's Bidding). There are other fringe benefits like Crux of Fate. Will build a list separate from this page to brew on.

Queen's Riches - The printing of Dockside Extortionist along with cards like Revel in Riches, Smothering Tithe, and Brass's Bounty leads to an interesting version of the pillowfort in which I protect the crown while finding powerful treasure makers and then plan to win with either Revel or a huge X spell, such as Torment of Hailfire.

Combat manipulation - The Monarch is good bait to get people attacking each other. Cards which force combats and allow you to control the outcome like Brutal Hordechief, Basandra, Battle Seraph, and Warmonger Hellkite are all decent here, and you could play more cards like Ghostly Prison in order to keep yourself out of the crosshairs.

Enchantress / Voltron - in lieu of the green enchantress cards, you get the Monarch and Mesa Enchantress. This build would probably be a bit pillowfort-y and benefit from being a Voltron deck, focused on buffing up Queen for some real big beats. Mardu is a good color spread for some Equipment voltron builds as well.

Game Reports Show

15-Feb 2020 - vs. 4 others (Secret Partners, I was the a face down team member to a player playing Feldon; opponents were Hallar, the Firefletcher, Sisters of Stone Death, and Nicol Bolas, the Ravager  ) - Turn 1 Ancient Tomb into Orzhov Signet, turn 2 fetch for Badlands, cast Queen. This the ideal opening line in the deck. This is why I play all the cheap rocks I can. I maintain control of the crown the entire game, save one time it is stolen, which I am able to steal it back right away; must have drawn me 8+ cards. Early Nahiri helps me dig, Elspeth's board wipe saves my partner and hurts all three of the other players, and Liliana Vess tutors up my favorite card Primevals' Glorious Rebirth. A kicked Comet Storm takes out all three of my walkers and Queen. I recast her, and the following turn she is still alive so I can cast the truly Glorious Rebirth, which gets back Nahiri, Elspeth, Liliana, as well as a previously-discarded Chandra and The Chain Veil. The Chandra's +1 to add RR was enough to allow me to activate the Veil and the board concedes.

28 Jan 2019 - vs. Maelstrom Wanderer and two others. The game was really a slug-fest between me and the Wanderer player. Early mana ramp leads to turn three Queen who gets taken by Wanderer's Gilded Drake and then suicided into the Drake. Later reanimation spells allow me to get both an Oracle of Mul Daya and card:Tatyova, Benthic Seer . This combo is amazingly powerful and I spend several turns protecting them. At one critical turn I decide not to Austere Command and that allows the Wanderer player to cast and resolve lots of big scary monsters and alpha-strike me to death. This with a No Mercy in play (which doesn't deter alpha strikes since the No Mercy cannot kill anything if I am dead) so I consider swapping out Dread for card:Kazuul and Disrupt Decorum for Gisela to give me more automatic protection for swings. Plus, they're legendary!

12 Jan 2019 - 5-player free-for-all against Nicol Bolas, the Ravager  , Etali, Primal Storm, and two The Scarab Gods - Turn 3 Queen off a signet, turn 4 Luminarch Ascension which is active by my next turn. Make 7 angels before it is destroyed. Several Wheel of Fortune effects happen. I Rise of the Dark Realms, board gets Cyclonic'd. After board fills back up, I wipe with Blasphemous, then cast Emrakul to control Nicol Bolas turn, and I cast Sepulchral to get back a few solid bodies. Eventually take the win. So many big spells!

7 Jan 2019 - League game - Turn one Ancient Tomb, Signet, turn 2 Queen, Turn 3 Angrath. Opponent's hands all get destroyed, Angrath ultimates to kill someone, Sepulchral reanimate enough to close out the game quickly.

Jan 2019 - OUT Emrakul, the Promised End, Temple of Malice, Temple of Triumph, Ajani Steadfast, Disrupt Decorum, Dread IN: Gisela, Blade of Goldnight, Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs, Settle the Score, Sidisi, Undead Vizier, Verdant Catacombs, Canyon Slough - Emrakul was needed in my Yuriko deck so I'm testing Gisela in her place. Both she and Kazuul provide varying degrees of protection for both my walkers and the monarch. Am testing Kazuul because he provides some alpha-strike protection, unlike Dread, and he is legendary. Canyon Slough and Verdant Catacomb seems a bit better than the Temples now that I run more fetches and Sun Titan. Testing Settle the Score over Ajani Steadfast as the effect can mean an out-of-nowhere ultimate which can be enough to give you the game. Was testing Thalia's Lancers again; they can search up any Planeswalker or creature in the deck, along with the Chain Veil, the two legendary sorceries, and Kor Haven. That's a lot of tutoring power on a good sized body and worth testing. But then I remembered that Sidisi can tutor for anything, is legendary, and costs the same amount. Whether I'm exploiting a token or herself (a sweet set-up if I'm going to get Primevals) I look forward to testing this new crop.

Jan 2019 - OUT Damnation, Gideon Jura, Reanimate, Nomad Outpost, Fetid Heath - IN: Emrakul, the Promised End, Mimic Vat, Sun Titan, Animate Dead, Wooded Foothills, Polluted Delta - Found that I still had too many board-wipes, not enough action. With the spread of card types, Emrakul becomes pretty cheap in this deck (plus flavor synergy with Nahiri's ultimate) and I'm wanting to test out Mimic Vat to see if the card advantage and Monarch-stealing of Vat is worth inclusion. Finally moved Sun Titan in and as a result swapped Animate Dead in over Reanimate. Adding Titan makes Fetch lands all the better than lazy tri-lands or awkward filters, even if it will make pimping this deck more expensive.

Nov 2018 - OUT Sorin, Solemn Visitor, Terminus, Urza's Ruinous Blast,Darksteel Mutation, Oath of Gideon, Xantcha, Sleeper Agent, Djeru, With Eyes Open IN: Animate Dead, Karn, Scion of Urza, Toxic Deluge, Slaughter the Strong, Mimic Vat, Plains - These changes reflect a desire to push for a lower mana curve and more win conditions. Reanimation is a good route when you are blowing up the board time and again. Also adding a 38th land to help with mana consistency; I have been experiencing too many games where I am stuck on 5-7 lands and unable to take more than one game action per turn.

Sept 2018 - The Eldest Reborn OUT - Xantcha, Sleeper Agent IN - Wanted to test several of the new C18 cards, and also test Crown of Doom to try and manipulate combat more. Haven't drawn Xantcha yet, but when I drew Crown I never felt like I had an opportune moment to cast and activate it. Cut Eldest Reborn because it never seemed to be strong enough; I cut Oath of Liliana for it (similarity of effect) but perhaps that was premature.
