Queen Narset, or: How I Learned To Love The Bomb

Commander / EDH

The_Believer_Of_Lies

NEW: I just thought I'd add in here... I recently actually made this deck and have been playing with it and... look, Narset is just going to have to be banned! She's TOO powerful. A single hit and usually the game is over, and if it's not and they have no removal for her, then the game is DEFINITELY over on her second hit. It's just absurd... But I'm gonna enjoy it while it lasts!

So this is my take on Narset for EDH. I guess one of the reasons that some people wouldn't like playing Narset is because there's such an obvious and self-explanatory way of playing her: Voltron with Extra turns, Extra combats, Land Destruction and Fork effects. "Solitaire" is perhaps a fair criticism to be leveled at her play style... As a result, I would say she is not the sort of general I would play in a multiplayer game with people you consider friends (though she is certainly super-effective in multiplayer) because she will inspire a lot of groans and hate. 1v1 is usually the only way I play her.

Now look.

1) Narset... She doesn't really play well with others. If she had a birthday party, well, she wouldn't have a birthday party because she's far too enlightened for such shallow nonsense. Now you can see why she has no friends. So yeah, creatureless (with the one exception of Generator Servant) is the only way to go. The only reason the Servant gets involved is because he's gone by the time Narset's on the scene, and only a fool would tell her he was ever there.

2) If you treat Narset the way the lady deserves to be treated, then first time she hits should spell the end of the game for 1v1, and sometimes once, but maybe twice or three times in multiplayer. She should be able to play around with enough little tricks and extra turns, extra combats, fork effects, mass land-destruction and voltron-inspired bolstering that, unless you're very very unlucky, that first hit should give you all the providence you need.

3) Card draw is clearly useless, even early game. To quote an ingenious poet of our time whose name currently eludes me: "If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it." Those harrowing words reminded me of how we as a society need to respect women through the display of material wealth and, as a result, the deck is loaded with rocks to give Narset and thus prove your worth in her eyes. Call me old-fashioned, but I think that's more important than card draw. Narset is the only card you should be looking at anyway.

KEY CARDS

Destruction:Sometimes aggro creature decks might put up a powerful early-game resistance. Narset is a sweet little biscuit, and she doesn't deserve or need that sort of misogynistic nonsense in her life. SO:

Catastrophe is the real star in this aspect. If you need to clean house before old Narsy gets home, bingo bango, BUT if you need to roll out the red carpet for the good lady... Well, what a card.

Cataclysm and Razia's Purification are tough choices... They have similar properties to Catastrophe, and Narset gets heaps impressed if she's there to see them, but if you play them before Narset gets a chance to show up. The deck doesn't have the draw to recover. HOWEVER, that said, if you can do it and leave yourself an ancient temple and a Gilded Lotus... Well that would be just dandy.

Supreme Verdict and Day of Judgment (or if you have a Wrath of God) are obvious choices if Narset isn't around.

Armageddon, Boom/Bust are self-explanatory. Also, if you've got a gentleman's Boros Charm handy then anything I've listed above is almost certainly game ending.

PROTECTION AND VOLTRON

Now you've finally got her... But can you keep her? Only you can answer that my friends. Unquestioned Authority, Spirit Mantle, Reconnaissance, Holy Mantle, Aqueous Form, Steel of the Godhead, Boros Charm, and Rogue's Passage, with perhaps Elspeth, Knight-Errant's second ability, are what you want. Together they compile a powerful suite of effects that will assure Narset will be untouched by the rabble. Eldrazi Conscription generally will help with this, and of course a well placed Savage Beating will finish the job.

I also think countermagic is a must with Narset. I run Mana Leak, Hinder, Counterspell, and Arcane Denial.

I'm drunk and I don't know why I wrote all this, but I did it so there you go.

Took out Increasing Vengeance for Turn to Mist

Narset is a great multiplayer general, because she can swing at the player who she won't die by attacking, but if you're playing 1v1 then it's hard to get through. My playgroup has a lot of sacrifice, and will often have a sizeable creature(s) by the time she's on the scene... Still not sure what to do about that.
