(R): Purphoros, God of the Forge

Standard* Aggro Burn Goblins Mono-Red Multiplayer

TimDepp

Mono-red relies on high-damage spells and aggressive creature-based tactics to quickly pound down on a single player until they are simply too low on life to mount a counterattack or survive any conditions of their own. In a multiplayer Commander game, a strong emphasis on board control and general-permanent interaction makes this a difficult task for most decks that can only rely on outright brutality, but Purphoros answers to this issue by making it easy and fast for a player to kill off their opponents by dealing damage rapidly to every opposing player at once.

Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under a player's control as long as Purphoros is active, every opponent is dealt 2 damage by Purphoros (which is not counted as commander damage but rather as damage dealt through loss of life). Since the greatest strength of Purphoros as a general for this deck is that he will spend most of the game as an indestructible enchantment rather than a creature, it is easy to curve into casting him and follow up with creature and artifact spells in order to begin dealing damage.

Positives1. An emphasis on inexpensive creatures coupled with synergistic spells and permanents allows Purphoros to deal consistent global damage.2. The amount of mana relative to the amount of total damage dealt each turn in a good game is incredibly cost-effective.3. Red's ability to artifact-hate and steal creatures from players prevents combo decks from interacting too readily with other players.Negatives1. Red's inherent weakness to blue is most apparent in a mono-colored deck and counterspells or spellpower will persistently punish this deck.2. The deck's innate lack of card draw makes typical midgame strategies too risky to rely on and typical lategame strategies too costly to implement.
- Caged Sun, Fire Diamond, and Ruby Medallion: Expand your mana limit.- Goblin Charbelcher: Cycle through your deck and deal damage just for doing it.- Orochi Hatchery: Expensive but permanent addition to your number of per-turn ETB triggers.- Panharmonicon and Throne of the God-Pharaoh:: Grants a huge boost to your damage output.- Skullclamp: Emergency card draw if you can stand to lose a few tokens and are not at risk due to a lack of chump-blockers.
