I love the Knotvine Mystic ! Forgot about that guy - think I'm going to add that one to mine now :p

I see you have some great tutors - that will probably go a long way for getting the right enchantment for the right situation.

I see you have Bear Umbra . Have you considered Hellkite Charger ? I have it in my slightly less competitive deck just because Bear Umbra is one of the best umbras and Uril loves umbras - and the Hellkite Charger can help whatever voltron you use beat through chump blockers systematically - but - I don't have the tutors that you have - so as not to push things too far by getting an "infinite combat phase" combo off too easily, systematically, or often.

I guess that from my playtesting - Uril umbras tends to ramp up into a huge one-shot voltron kind of fast so that the whole infinite combats thing might not matter ...

But you did mention that you are going for competitive here so I wonder if you have thought about that combo at all.

+1 for protecting your voltron well!

I think the Hellkite Charger didn't make it as it combos only with one card Bear Umbra and I'm not a fan of infinite combos so it would be kind of hypocritical of me to include it on that basis.

The whole deck is built to buff Uril and protect him. Grand Abolisher , City of Solitude and Vexing Shusher from counter spells, Tajuru Preserver and Sigarda, Host of Herons from sacrificing, Riding Red Hare and Spirit en-Dal make him basically unblockable, Gaddock Teeg protects him from things like Blasphemous Act and board wipes (Damnation , Wrath of God etc) and the combo of Sterling Grove and Privileged Position give all my permanents hexprof to prevent land destruction etc.

Even your tutors offer you protection for the commander against things like Terminus that would get around even Privileged Position . Pretty good!

What would you do if you faced Bruna, Light of Alabaster ? Her ability isn't targeted so Privileged Position wouldn't stop her from just sucking all your auras up.

I have Brand in my 'sideboard' if there is thievery going on with things like Bribery , Control Magic or Insurrection although I'm thinking of replacing it with Gruul Charm . Both of those cards work with auras that would be stolen by Bruna. Failing that you could use any number of Destroy all enchantments'' cards such as Back to Nature or Tempest of Light and then cast Retether or Replenish or Faith's Reward .

I think if your coming up against Bruna, instant speed removal is key as her ability only triggers when she attacks so you need to be able to respond on your opponents turn or risk dying.

Bruna could be a pretty hard match up for an Uril deck so I think you should try and race it by taking advantage of what the green in Uril's mana cost offers you access to: RAMP. Things like Cultivate , Kodama's Reach and Explosive Vegetation will help you get Uril out and pumped before Bruna has a chance to hit the board. Including these ramp spells is the only change I would consider with my build at the minute.

I think that would work in 1v1 fairly well. I found that the various "vow" cards work well such as Vow of Wildness . I also like Kitsune Mystic and Crown of the Ages . I have to think about Bruna, Light of Alabaster because when I told my buddy that I will make an Uril, the Miststalker deck, he decided to make a Bruna deck.

Headtrauma1984 you know that Winds of Rath is getting reprinted in the Heroes vs. Monsters duel deck, right? it's in the Heroes deck, the one with Sun Titan .

Very Nice! You should throw in Rith, the Awakener for S and Gs. Everybody loves a legendary dragon.

September 3, 2013 6:32 p.m.

also Realm Razer for added "fuck you"

I like dropping bombs, canterlotguardian. I may not build the best decks, but I know how to have fun lol

September 3, 2013 6:55 p.m.

that's the way to do it.

Neither Realm Razer , Rith, the Awakener nor Godsire belong in an Uril deck, its about making Uril, the Miststalker huge while locking your opponents down. That being said, some of those bestow creatures from Theros could find a place in the deck

canterlotguardian I did not know that thanks. ThrKing let them have there fun.

how do you feel about Awakening Zone ? blockers and mana

September 5, 2013 4:17 a.m.

Headtrauma1984 that's usually a safe bet but what will you take out for it?

Slayers' Stronghold is something ive been looking at but i never have the mana available to activate it after casting Uril.

Open the Vaults is a bad Replenish or Retether as it works for everyone

In a multiplayer game, Open the Vaults can be fun - especially if you run Kitsune Mystic and Crown of the Ages . Even if you don't get those two cards out, you will probably be the player at the table with the most enchantments - unless you are facing Bruna, Light of Alabaster and then she doesn't need your help to get them back. The few "removal" enchantments that people would get back would be more likely to be played on opponents (like Pacifism and Lignify and things) since Uril can't be targeted by them. Besides, it is a nice budget option and Uril benefits greatly from having some way of getting enchants from the graveyard back - it's better than nothing - and for many people it may be better than shelling out the money for the expensive version. It is also partly a style thing - I do like to use a smattering of "group love" cards in decks and tend to lean towards higher interaction cards over self-contained ones - just because I find it more fun (which makes me question the use of Jokulhaups - but think about it ... Jokulhaups + Umbras on Uril ... jinkees ...)

I think Rith, the Awakener (as well as Living Hive btw) is good in Uril, the Miststalker because it generates chump-blockers and creates an air-presence. Both of these could be alternative voltrons in case Uril gets tucked - a thing that is becoming more and more popular to do.

I agree that protecting Uril is the top priority. But with enough people ganging up on you, they will still be able to get rid of him - trust me. Uril is also only capable of attacking one player at a time and unless you get Eldrazi Conscription or something giving him double-strike out (in addition to evasion), it is likely to be a 2-shot requirement. So considering what might happen in the case of losing him or wanting more than one viable attacker isn't bad for a second priority (in my opinion).

At any rate, for a lot of these suggestions and options, how good or bad they are probably depends a great deal on which opponents you face.

This deck actually exists, I play this deck every week, well not every week as I have others as well, in my meta which consists of Riku of Two Reflections , Sen Triplets , Sedris, the Traitor King , Wort, the Raidmother , Varolz, the Scar-Striped , Rakdos, Lord of Riots , Ghave, Guru of Spores , Heartless Hidetsugu , Isamaru, Hound of Konda , Iname, Death Aspect and Thada Adel, Acquisitor . This is tied for the strongest (with Sen Triplets) if not the strongest depending on the draw.

I'm never going to play Jokulhaups as those type of cards ruin games, along with Obliterate et al.

Sigarda, Host of Herons is the only backup beater and its rare that I need to use it for anything other than its anti-sac ability.

Why would I waste a spot for Open the Vaults when both Replenish and Retether in the deck? My meta is too competitive to help other players out (I am thinking about a Bant pillowfort deck though)

September 8, 2013 7:02 a.m.

guessling says... #25

Yeah - I was only thinking about Jokulhaups because I got MLDed out of a color by a teamed up / coordinated play last game I played and the meta I am in is starting to get more competitive - but also more restrictive (seemingly) (which might be part of competing on new levels and wanting to win more). So since someone did it to me, I was wondering ... is it time for Jokulhaups yet or is it not to that point yet? The person I playtest against also said to me after a night of dukeing it out "so I figured out how to beat you - taking out your blue lands". So taking out lands is becoming "a thing" but it is just emerging in my playgroup.

I guess if other people in my meta are going to go that route, I don't necessarily have to as well - simply because I don't like that style so much. I do have Terastodon and Sylvan Primordial but those don't always hit lands and don't hit very many lands - and they come out pretty late in the game when players have lots of lands to spare.

I would say that if you already have Replenish and Retether then you probably don't need Open the Vaults as well. I was just saying that it isn't a categorically bad card - it just might need to be built around a little more.

I'm surprised that you only have one backup beater in a competitive meta - but then again, if you can avoid making yourself a target (a thing I am not good at - thus the need for multiple back ups), then it could work - you certainly do have many layers of protection!
