Since Crypt Ghast has the hybrid symbol in its description of Extort, it is an illegal card in this deck because it does not match your commanders color identity.

Last post was meant to read, "Since Crypt Ghast has the hybrid symbol in its description of Extort, is it an illegal card in this deck because it does not match your commanders color identity?

Centaurriyl The symbol in Crypt Ghast's text box is reminder text, and therefore it is legal. No symbols in reminder texts count towards color identity.

PheardemonsOh, ok. Thanks for that.

Good question to ask as a new player Centaurriyl. Everyone is confused at first by this. Same with Blind Obedience. Its easiest to understand by realizing that the reminder text isnt actually on the card at all. Its just telling you what the ability does in order to help people who come into contact with obscure abilities for the first time. Its unfortuantely confusing in this context. You can be sure though that a deck with 100 upvotes doesnt have any illegal cards in it, and more than that, TOs system would say this is an illegal deck for trying to run cards outside of the generals color identity. Thanks for looking and commenting!

Sheoldred, Whispering One would be a good card to add.

I am a fan of decks that are unique, creative and original while at the same time being playable and powerful, and this is one of the coolest ones I've seen. Well done sir!

Thanks a lot TheRealSpecialK! That means a lot.

Have you thought about running Amulet of Vigor to really abuse Korlash's Grandeur ability?

July 13, 2018 6:42 p.m.

TheRealSpecialK yeah I have and if he was the General I would probably run almost the same deck with Amulet in place of Ashes of the Fallen.

Very creative ways to make use of Korlash's grandeur. Helm of the Host, Mirror of the Forebears, and Mirrorpool are other ways of copying Korlash.

Gray Merchant of Asphodel is great with your recursion, and is also a wincon for the Deathrender + Decaying Soil combo.

Not sure if you'd be in the market for a Morality Shift to give you access to all the creatures in your library.

Overall I think Korlash would be a better commander, since it's easier to tutor/draw Haakon then discard him, rather than having to draw Command Beacon then use it then discard him, and Korlash can help ramp and thin the deck earlier.

You’re not wrong about any of that but there’s really no reason to play Haakon in the deck then because nothing else is a knight. He’s fun for the occasional game where he’s super relevant and to promote the wider discard theme in the deck. Also I like sitting down at a game where no one has ever seen my commander before. Korlash May have the same reception and surprise factor, but I just like something about Haakon. And it’s funny how they’ve made so many ways to use Grandeur in EDH after mirage mirror! Personally not interested in Morality Shift just because it exposes you so much to graveyard hate. And I’ve used Gary for years as a wincon in other black decks and just find him to be boring so I left him out of this one. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and upvoting!

Umm HerrOttesen I don’t think this is a budget deck...haha

Hah hah, fair enough FenIsABasicSwamp. Honestly, it was supposed to be more of a "hey, this deck is pretty neat and I want to build it sometime" but I'm too lazy to rename the folder. Nonetheless, this is a really neat deck; it's super creative.

Thanks HerrOttesen I really appreciate that!

I can respect somebody who is actively trying to play the worst Commander in the game and actually making it work.

Here are a few cards I think you could consider Josu Vess, Lich Knight, Phyrexian Crusader, Whip of Erebos, and Beseech the Queen.

November 11, 2018 1:50 a.m.

lol thanks CaptSillva, the deck is one of my top 5 favorites of all my decks now too. If only more people would try to branch out and build interesting decks outside of the mainstream. Thanks for the suggestions; I considered Josu when he was spoiled but I only want tokens to be sac fodder and he makes me have to pay for them every time I cast him, there's no way to cheat kicker costs. It doesn't even work with Deathrender unfortunately. Phyrexian Crusader is a fun card in some decks but doesn't feel like it actually does anything in this to me. What are you thinking of with it? Whip of Erebos is 100% out of place in Haakon since Haakon literally just lets you replay your creatures without exiling them, so the Whip would be redundant and counterproductive. I considered Beseech but really, you can have too many tutors in black decks and this one already almost does as far as I'm concerned. Really you just need 2: one to get your Razaketh, and Razaketh.

Phyrexian Crusader is just generally a really powerful creature. First Strike + Infect and two protections make him really hard to deal with. Also for course he brings an alternate win con. He is a bit on the weaker side in this deck, but adjustments could always be made with the equipment package. Batterskull and Hatred both work great with him.

Josu is also just a generally good card. A 4/5 Menace for 4 isn't super intimidating, but it isn't an awful baseline, and it pays off in the late game. This is Mono-Black commander so mana is rarely an issue. You even run most of the Mana doubling cards, but could even easily fit in a few more like Liliana of the Dark Realms. Not a super powerful Planewalker, but that is kind of the point. Players are typically less threatened by her allowing you to get far more value off of her than you should.

Whip is more of a life gain engine than a reanimation card. Blanket Lifelink is just so powerful so much so that I don't think it is wrong to run it when you have no intention to activate it. Of course Black is not without other good ways to gain life, but Whip is a very strong option when you have strong ETB triggers to go along with it, and you do. You may not want to Exile your guys, but sometimes tempo is more important than value.

Your not wrong about running too many Tutors and generally two is enough, but your deck leans heavily on getting very specific cards just to function properly. Many of which are fragile to removal and graveyard hate. So having more ways to get the cards you need can be fairly useful.

Though maybe Beseech isn't the right Tutor, perhaps something else that offers more flexibility and late game value like Sidisi, Undead Vizier.

how about Priest of Gix ?

November 12, 2018 3:17 a.m.

nakedgto what’s your reasoning for him? He’s a cool card that I can play infinitely with his own mana, Haakon, and a sac outlet but I don’t see much real utility for him.

FenIsABasicSwamp Amazing Deck! I’m looking to build Korlash myself and hadn’t found much inspiration and wasn’t feeling great about it but this has definitely got me thinking! Do you think this deck would work on a budget? Looks like a blast to play!

November 28, 2018 5:29 p.m.

Thanks a lot for commenting khayoz! It is a ton of fun to play and has rapidly become one of my favorite decks to play. I hope the Korlash combo in here is helpful to you. Should definitely work on a budget. The expensive stuff comes from foiling it out and having a few specific things that aren't necessary to Korlash like Crucible of Worlds and fetchlands. Best of luck!

You said "TheRealSpecialK yeah I have and if he was the General I would probably run almost the same deck with Amulet in place of Ashes of the Fallen." Could you please tell me which cards would you remove and which would you add if Korlash was your Commander? Btw, great deck!!
