I love the interactions of this deck, but wining a game with Rise when game seems lost is... priceless :)

Earlier we were discussing extra card draw potential, what about Mask of Memory ?

It could be an option, but right now I'm quite happy with 3 Night's Whisper and Chandra, Pyromaster :=

I'm thinking about extra spot removal, namely replacing one of the Lightning Bolt by another Devour Flesh . Sometimes I've trouble dealing with large creatures, namely Tarmogoyf .

Here are the current tests:

Main board:One Vampire's Bite and one Lightning Bolt out, one Devour Flesh and one Anger of the Gods in.

Sideboard:One Anger of the Gods out (now on the main board), one Grafdigger's Cage in.

I feel that one Anger of the Gods fits main boards in current metagame. Very useful against Affinity, Pod, Naya Zoo, tribal decks, etc, and is almost never a dead card. OTOH, I think I need one more heavy spot removal, especially when playing Jund. Sometimes, I have a Tarmogoyf on the battlefield and just a Lightning Bolt in hand. Not pretty :)

With one Anger of the Gods moving to main board, I think the second Grafdigger's Cage is a good option, namely because of Pod and UWR Control.

I see my previous post didn't make it to the page. Recap, I play 3 Lightning Bolt , two Terminate and 1 Dreadbore . The sorcery speed has never really been an issue, while it can still hit planes walkers like Bolt can. I have been happy with it :)

Interesting. I'll use one Dreadbore instead of a Devour Flesh , and see hoe it goes :)

After seeing Chandra, Pyromaster here I am curious how she will do in my izzet deck..
I'm gonna test it out!

As for this whole control spell issue; it can depend on your meta. If you notice certain decks being played around you more often you can adapt to them. I like the ones you have included as it provides a good versatility. Although playing a lot of 1-ofs may be inconsistent. But if its working for you no need to fix something that's not broken!

@Nefferean: Chandra, Pyromaster has been quite good :) She's very underrated IMO. Her first and second abilities are quite useful and even the last one has given me some victories.

When she and Liliana of the Veil are both on the battlefield will be probably game over for my opponent. It's quite fun to lock the game with both of them :)

Yeah that is pretty cruel ;)
So far from tests I did, I really liked her!

Deviant Glee for the pump and trample effect? Ensuring you give them some damage.

Hi UpperDeckerTaco, thanks for your suggestion :) I've considered Deviant Glee in the past, it's a nice card but, being an enchantment, I can only use it once on Inkmoth Nexus .

July 26, 2014 12:30 p.m.

I was thinking for more of your creatures, so my thinking was to add 2 Deviant Glee as so not rely on them and not take up space but would help wreck your opponents.

Minor tweak: back with 2 Runechanter's Pike once again. Vampire's Bite is great and served me well and both cards have their pros and cons, but I feel like that most of the times I was drawing Vampire's Bite I was wishing that it was Runechanter's Pike instead.

And Pike makes a great combo with Lili.

Just had an insane victory against Melira Pod.

Game was 1-1. On the final match, opponent had 6 creatures on the field and played Melira, tapping Pod. His life was at 7 and had 5 poison counters. He attacked with some of the creatures and I went to just 3 life.

I just had a Phyrexian Vatmother and 2 Inkmoth Nexus. I was hoping to topdeck Anger of the Gods to wipe the board out. I drew a Rakdos Charm, which I normally board against Melira Pod in order to destroy Pod. "Damn, I'm done", I thought. But then there was light: "He has 7 creatures and is at 7 life and no Viscera Seer to sacrifice creatures for". BAZINGA!

It was great, indeed :)

So, I managed to get my hand on another Liliana of the Veil , so I'm replacing one Devour Flesh :)

I'm also considering more Artefact hate and will possibly add a Shattering Spree to the sideboard. Any thoughts? Robots/Affinity seems to topdeck every single draw.

Hurkyl's Recall as SB against Affinity? Also Vandalblast .

Hi Abubroki, thanks for your suggestions :) I'm definitely considering Vandalblast and also Shattering Spree . Will test both soon. Will also test Hurkyl's Recall (probably the best of the three) as soon as I get my hands on another Marsh Flats .

Wow! The "missing" fetch lands are getting printed in Khans of Tarkir. This is excellent news for Modern players as the fetch lands price will drop almost for sure. And this deck needs one more fetch land so I can't wait till I get my hands in a Bloodstained Mire :D.

Think I might need a lifelink card on sideboard to help me deal with burn decks. Whip of Erebos ?

I played with Vampire's Bite for several months. It's a good option when playing agains burn but Runechanter's Pike is a better option overall.

Three Liliana of the Veil does make the difference :)

Totally agreeing that the return of the fetch lands is great for Modern! I think it will be good to upgrade to Bloodstained Mire in stead of the once we are running now

I have the same problem with the burn decks. And the problem is getting worse, as they seem to get more popular every week! They are very well equipped against life gain: They have Skullcrack main and sometimes even artifact hate. They will definitely have it in the sideboard Making cards like Cruel Feeding , Vampire's Bite and Whip of Erebos easily answered. Personally, I think that against red it's better to have an aura / enchantment that can be played on Phyrexian Crusader . It would have been great if Gift of Orzhova would have been non-white :D

On a different topic, Phyrexian Vatmother has been mostly a disaster for me. Yes, there have been games I was pleasantly surprised, but the majority of the games it was just subpar. I like what red brings to this deck, especially Rise/Fall and Lightning Bolt in the main, but also the tech that comes in the sideboard. I have to admit however, that recently I have been looking into green in stead of red. Mainly to gain access to Garruk Wildspeaker that I hope to use to ramp into Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon , but also for his ultimate to make the Inkmoth Nexus dangerous flyers :) In addition, with green I have access to Abrupt Decay , Maelstrom Pulse , Rancor and Pendelhaven . I even have been working on a aggro sideboard plan utilizing Glistener Elf and pump spells to outrace them...
