After a couple of more tests, I added one more Swamp and reduced one Dragonskull Summit . Now, the deck is less vulnerable to Blood Moon (a couple of folks im my meta run it), while also reducing the probability of a land entering tapped on the battlefield.

No worries! Sowing Salt and Fall would for me be the reason to splash red, actually. Maybe a little bit also Rakdos Charm as it kills the Twin Combo decks, is extra graveyard and artifact hate. Pretty cool if that come in one card :)

And Fall kind of brings me to the next point. I think, depending on the deck of course, that Fall actually is more powerful turn 3/4 than turn 2, because of the lands you can hit (especially on the play). I personally love hand with two lands and a Night's Whisper . Almost always I will draw into my third land for Lili or Crusader. Again, depending on the matchup you want to play it a bit differently, but the 3rd turn drop can win you the game. I have tried Read the Bones , but it did not work, since it's competing with two crucial pieces of the deck.

Depending on your play and meta, if life lose is a problem, play 3 Verdant Catacombs and skip the Thoughtseize for Duress . It can fetch your Blood Crypt if you need it, otherwise a Swamp (obviously). However, with Blood Moon or Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth would become a mountain or swamp. The Catacombs will enable you to have the black sources, even if you opponent plays Blood Moon (just sacrifice as response). Yes it will be harder to cast a turn 1/2 Lightning Bolt , but I am not a fan of that card anyway ;)

ps I would play Dreadbore or Hero's Downfall for it :D

Slaughter Games is also awesome against some decks (Spaceshift and Living End, for instance) and a great addition to the sideboard. OTOH, I also use Rakdos Charm against Tron, it's great to slow the deck down.

And you're right, Fall can be better on turns 3/4. Normally, I only use it on turn 2 when I played Inquisition of Kozilek or Duress on turn 1.

I also had one Dreadbore on the sideboard, but dropped it for the third Pithing Needle , which can be used against more threats (Manlands, for instance, and also to slow down Tron or to stop Splinter Twins), only costs one mana and stays on the Battlefield (unless is destroyed, of course). Hero's Downfall is cool, but costs 3 mana.

Fetch lands are expensive but Verdant Catacombs will be my next addition, exactly for that reason you mentioned :)

Hey Dutchmen, guess what? Just added two Sowing Salt to the sideboard :) Many thanks for the hint, how could I not know this card? It's awesome against Tron. Tron was one of the archetypes that made me splash red on this deck and this is the card that I was missing. A little slow, but normally I can slow down Tron with Rakdos Charm , Pithing Needle and some discard.

Just run a couple of tests against a Tron deck and guess what? :D

You are welcome! Depending on your meta, you might want to run three. Yes it's a bit slow, but it takes decks apart. In line with this, Ghost Quarter destroys a land faster than Tectonic Edge , though will still set you back a land trying to make the 4 lands.

Ow and I guess you took the Tron deck apart if you were able to cast the Sowing Salt ;)

When I played the MBC version of this deck, I used to run 2 Ghost Quarter and 2 Tectonic Edge :)

IMO, Ghost Quarter is better against Tron and fast Manlads and Tectonic Edge is better against everything else. For instance, Edge is great against Kiki-Pod and decks heavily dependent on Cryptic Command (which is 1UUU). A lot of folks in my meta use Cryptic Command, but I have other ways to deal with it. I'll run some more tests and will probably replace both Tectonic Edge by a couple of Ghost Quarter as Tron is my main concern right now :)

Very true. Can you share the mana bad you used for your MBC version? I am curious to see it. As you can see from my list, I have no land destruction in my MBC at the moment, since I really want to have at least 2 black sources in the third turn and I am very much in doubt whether this will happen consistently enough with, for example, 2 Ghost Quarter and 1 Tectonic Edge

Walrusyn says... #8

Dutchmen sure :) I used to run 23 lands: 1 Urborg, 4 Inkmoth Nexus, 2 Ghost Quarter, 2 Tectonic Edge, 1 Bojuka Bog and 13 Swamps. Most of the times I played with these lands, but I also played with just 2 TE and no GQ and with one of each. I must say that 3 cards for land destruction on a MBC deck is probably more than enough. As you said, on turn 3, you'll want to have 2 black sources to drop a Crusader and keep some pressure on the battelfield :)

Another minor tweak: 1 Read the Bones out, 1 Night's Whisper in. Read the Bones is cool, but too slow for this deck and sometimes is completely useless.

I'm considering some new options:

  • Phyrexian Obliterator : despite not having infect, think it would be a great card to put some pressure on the battlefield. The idea would be to replace a Vatmother by a Obliterator.
  • Vampire's Bite : I'm happy with Runechanter's Pike , but sometimes it's too slow for Modern as I need 4 mana to have a creature equipped.

Would love to read your opinions :)

I am honestly confused as to why you're running Devour Flesh and not Geth's Verdict ...

November 28, 2013 12:49 a.m.

oops... didn't see your explanation... I still think Geth's Verdict would be preferable, as the BB mana cost is not that problematic in a deck this black-heavy...

Hi gentlemansquid, thank you for your comments :) Believe me, sometimes, on turn two, you just don't have BB and need to use Devour Flesh . Happened a lot to me in the past :) Even in later turns it's useful, as I may use my black/red mana to cast other spells. And I really don't care if opponent gains life :)

Hey brother just wanted to ask... Why do you prefer Phyrexian Vatmother over Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon ? I would like to build this deck and I would appreciate if you could help me here... Cheers ;)

Arid Mesa seems a tad awkward. Marsh Flats seem a bit more streamlined towards this deck. Additionally, I'd like to see how Apostle's Blessing could work for you. Phyrexian mana isn't a problem and whether you keep the Mesa or go with Flats, you can throw in a Godless Shrine or Sacred Forge for the white mana.

You could even do the Verdant Catacombs approach to throw in random Mutagenic Growth s.

I do like this deck as is though. +1

Hi Argmals, thank you for your comment, up vote if you like :)

Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon is great and I've been trying to use one for some time. Its main drawback is that it's a five mana creature, while Phyrexian Vatmother is just 4. The main idea of this deck is to control the game on the early turns, with discard and removal, while putting some pressure on the battlefield with Phyrexian Crusader and Inkmoth Nexus .

Vatmother works as a finisher and 70% of the times that this creature enters the battlefield I'm already in full control of the game and will finish it in a couple of turns. So, IMO, it's better to drop it for just for mana, instead of 5 :)

Skithiryx is also a great option, though, namely because of flying, but I think it fits better on more aggressive decks.

Hi mana191, thank you for your comment and upvote :)

You're right about the lands, I included Arid Mesa because I already had one and it's useful in some cases. As soon as I have the budget for it, I'll include a couple of Marsh Flats or Verdant Catacombs (I have some cards to trade at the local MTG store :))

OTOH, Apostle's Blessing and Mutagenic Growth are two of the cards I've been wanting to test for a while. Nowadays, I'm testing Vampire's Bite instead of Runechanter's Pike . Let's see how it goes :) Pike is cool, but kind of slow for Modern, I think.

Thank you once again for your comments and suggestions, glad you like :)

How about Vault Skirge ?

November 29, 2013 1:13 p.m.

Walrusyn says... #24

Hi Ndarren87, thanks for your comment and upvote :) Vault Skirge is a great evasive creature with lifelink but it doesn't have infect, which is my win con. It's great for more aggressive decks, though.

OTOH, as I want to include Thoughtseize in a near future (to replace Duress ), I need to have some cards to give me lifelink and will need to considering some options (i'm testing Vampire's Bite right now). I'm open to suggestions :)

Once again, thank your for your comment and upvote :)
