So I went to FNM this week with hope. I ended up going 2-2, losing 0-2 to a mono-red aggro deck after I mulliganed to 5, and 0-2 to a jund monsters deck against which I drew no creature of CMC < 6.
Sideboarding in a bunch of cheap burn spells and poor luck for the opponent allowed me to win 2-1 against a pretty rad mono-red goblin deck. I was able to suppress the mob and ramp enough to get out the fatties.
My other victory was against a BUG control deck that seemed to be put together just for Hornet's Nest and Aetherspouts, but also had Jace, Architect of Thought and Kiora, the Crashing Wave. In game 1 I was able to T2 Domri into a T3 Scuttling Doom Engine with haste. That was pretty much it.
In game 2 I displayed a high level of stupidity by casting Mizzium Mortars on Hornets Nest. It ended up being a close game, but holy shit did I deserve that loss. In game 3 I was able to get out planeswalkers and creatures and build up pressure and get him to 2 life, but 3 Aetherspouts later, I was frazzled.
After an overloaded Cyclonic Rift cast in response to an Eidolon of the Great Revel, I was left with almost nothing. Luckily, he failed to remember Great Revel's trigger, and played a Sylvan Caryatid, killing himself.
With the low-cost creatures, it's possible to survive until the midgame, where you can get out big creatures, and from there everything is great.
