Playtesting Notes Show

20171130

Played against 4C Jeskai Ascendancy combo and Nath Elfball. I ended up winning the game, but there was a lot of luck and misplays from opponents involved.

I noted several issues:

• I was outtempoed by the creature-based ramp of both opponents. Not surprising with sans green vs. green, but problematic with the other points below.
• They had scarier boardstates in the midgame and I couldn't attack to get Kindred Discovery triggers. I didn't draw into my boardwipes until endgame
• I lacked raw card draw and card selection to get me out of the hole.
• Add one point I set up RIP Helm combo, only to get RIP destroyed in response to playing helm. I had no reliable way to recur RIP (apart from Sun Titan , which costs 6 and is hard to tutor for).

Tweak strategy:

• Add a little bit more non-creature draw like Frantic Search , Chart a Course or Sphinx's Revelation
• Add some recursion or other way to achieve combo redundancy: consider something like Restoration Specialist or Treasure Hunter
• Deadeye Navigator might be too weak without something like Palinchron - it comes down too late and doesn't win the game. If I end up cutting it, I should probably also cut Pestermite and possibly Gilded Lotus
• Stonybrook Schoolmaster is great with Azami or Patron Wizard, but on its own it tends to whiff - it's not relevant enough in a creature-heavy meta.

Proposed changes:

• Remove: Deadeye Navigator , Gilded Lotus , Pestermite , Stonybrook Schoolmaster
• Add: Treasure Hunter , Sphinx's Revelation , Felidar Guardian , Voltaic Key

Gameplan Show

This is primarily a 'blink' themed deck. The primary strategy is too play creatures with valuable 'ETB' effects (e.g. Oreskos Explorer or Sea Gate Oracle ) and use blink effects to use them repeatedly (e.g. Eldrazi Displacer or Venser, the Sojourner ). Some creatures fit in both categories (e.g. Restoration Angel ). There is a Wizards subtheme: not only is the commander a wizard, but there are many wizards with powerful ETB effects (e.g. Venser, Shaper Savant ). Important here is the addition of Azami, Lady of Scrolls , which turns all the wizards in draw engines. This is a feature in some of the game-winning lines (see below).

Infinite mana combos:

• Eldrazi Displacer + Rasputin Dreamweaver
• Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter is break-even with from non-land sources, more goes infinite
• Deadeye Navigator + Gilded Lotus + Pestermite

Infinite mana outlets:

• Walking Ballista : no color restrictions
• Capsize : requires at least
• Stroke of Genius : requires at least
• Deadeye Navigator : requires at least
• Eldrazi Displacer : note requires two colorless mana as opposed to colored

Other win conditions:

• Helm of Obedience + Rest in Peace : this kills 1 player. You can kill another one if you have Brago, King Eternal or another way to blink or untap an artifact.
