We Shall Inherit

The Underempire

Marrow-Gnawer is my favorite card in MTG and the main reason I started playing back in the day when Champions of Kamigawa came out. Here I've finally incorporated him into a semi-competitive commander deck. The idea of this deck is to spam rat tokens with Marrow-Gnawer's ability and other cards combo off of this by sacrificing rat tokens, removing enemy creatures, increasing your life / decreasing the opponents, and drawing lots of cards.

Rat Colony Is probably technically better for the curve and buffing up from any rat in play, rather than ones with the same name. However, I like the old school feel to the Relentless Rats, so I'm rolling with them. Rat Colony also benefits from Skullclamp card draw, whereas Relentless Rats do not. In my case though I don't care, as there is plenty of other draw tech in here.

Primary combos:

Marrow-Gnawer + Thornbite Staff = Infinite Rats. Old school: Plunge into Darkness to sacrifice the rat tokens for infinite life. New school: Ayara, First of Locthwain / Blood Artist / Bastion of Remembrance on the field = infinite life and damage to opponent. Increasing Ambition to search for Thornbite Staff. There many are other good Black tutors that could be included, I'm just opting to not always go for the infinite combo as a win-con for this deck. Just an occasional win-con.

Lightning Greaves and Cloak and Dagger make Marrow-Gnawer not targetable and can be equipped immediately for free

Lightning Greaves and Thousand-Year Elixir give Marrow-Gnawer haste for his activated ability

Mirkwood Bats activates 1 life loss for every rat Marrow-Gnawer creates, potentially game ending as soon as it's played.

Updates Add

Took out two Relentless Rats to try out Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm and Virtue of Persistence, theoretically it should make the deck more powerful having more permanent recursion despite losing 1 creature. Virtue even has targeted removal if there's nothing to return. I try to focus on cards with multiple uses like this, which is also why I took out Patriarch's Bidding, despite it being great with Relentless Rats. Because I've had games before where it's just a dead card sitting in my hand, waiting for a board wipe that never comes. Also switching out Costly Plunder for Toxic Deluge for some mass removal that this deck is missing. It's better than Damnation since it can remove indestructible creatures, with the drawback of losing life in the process. That should be okay since the deck has lots of lifegain options. Tragic Slip is also better than Go for the Throat for indestructible removal. With the added bonus of 1 less mana and should have the big minus condition since Marrow Gnawer sacrifices a Rat each turn.
