Works fairly well I'd say 65% of the time he's a 2/2 on turn 2 or 3. Also with Fiery Cannonade he both survives and trades up very well.

I have a Red deck of my own. instead of the spot for the rigging runners. I play 3 insult/injury (mostly because of soul-scar) and 2 glorybringers. With your play experience, what do you think of these cards mainboard? Ever since I have mained insults I've always come 2nd place in the past to fnm. What do you think about main board harsh mentor?

Glory always felt too slow when your main goal was to stick Hazoret. Tried insult before was always stuck in hand.

How does Soul-Scar Mage play for you? Playing against it it has always seemed kind of... meh. The prowess, along with some burn spells has caught me off guard once or twice, but it seems to me like it is always attacking for one. My deck runs very few creatures so I'm not sure how useful the second ability is, but I'm not sure if it makes him worth running. On your question about the Throne of the God-Pharaoh what turn do imagine playing it on? It'd throw off your curve and playing it too late might not give much value. I would recommend 2-3 Chandra, Torch of Defiance though. She's pretty powerful in your deck.
Anyway, those are just my two cents. I hope this was helpful and good luck!

Soul comes in good against the mirror giving me a answer to hazoret. It also stacks so a lightning strike can kill just about anything in standard. Tbh tho throne on turn 3 is solid along side a one drop preferably bomat. If you curve out turn 1 and 2 then drop it your not losing any gas because it hits for 2-3 assuming your opponent didn't have a play but I'm not running them the gf uses 2 in her mono black aggro and it's been golden.

How have matchups against control faired for the deck? Im interested in putting a red deck together soon and the meta where I play is almost entirely control decks.

I've beaten a few control decks like a 55% win ratio uw approach isn't too bad ub scarab god and hostage isn't a good matchup without chandra and glorybringer.

Surprisingly my matchups against midrange decks has been so much better vs Temur, temur black aswell as Sultai. Keep hearing how it's suppose to be a bad matchup but tbh only decks I don't like running into are god pharaohs gift decks with hostage taker and scarab god, and in control decks running the same cards.

Okay, sweet. I run a U/B control Scarab God and Hostage Taker brew that has been pretty successful but can be very boring and really lengthens out games. I was wondering if Mono-red could speed through some of the matchups in my meta, and this looked like a well put together deck. I run into constrictor decks, temur energy, Dino midrange, and Approach control every week. The decks I have had the most trouble with are the control decks because control VS control is really just who gets a lucky break. Would you think this could be more of a contender? If so, what could potentially increase the odds against Scarab God Dimir control matchups? Only one other guy has a Dimir deck that worries me.

I'm considering upping my scavenger grounds to 4 putting two in sb. Chandra is also solid aswell as glorybringer you have to drop threat after threat after threat and overwhelm them. I've only had two bad matches I lost in last 4 weeks to each of the decks I mentioned. Scavenger grounds or sentinel totem answers them well.

Red players are gonna have to increase the number of abrades and graveyard hate now since the U/B G-PG took 2nd in the pro tour.

Current meta shifted away from vehicles and bit more scarab god and a few god pharaohs gift decks popped up so added in Sentinel Totem to sb.

Went 3-1 losing to a RB Aggro deck I've beaten twice that runs hazoret glorybringer and chandra. Game two I chandra's defeated two glorybringer, 1 hazoret with soul scar mage and shocked a second hazoret to death with 2 soul scar mage out but sadly a bonepicker did me in.

A single shock couldn't have killed the Hazoret. Soul-Scar Mage's ability is a replacement effect, so they wouldn't each put 2 -1/-1 counters on the Hazoret.

Went 4-0 At FNM and 2-2 At Showdown losing to two decks I built lol cats and mono black aggro. Deck performs amazingly cats is tbh my roughest matchup and my mono black aggro deck is solid that match went to game 3 and I made the mistake of keeping a one land hand with a 4 cards curving into hazoret but going 7 turns no land.

1-1-1 At tonight's Saturday Showdown won first game against a homebrew deck that wasn't very good. Lost a close match to my girlfriends mono black aggro. Then had a bad match against blue black pirates. He got game one and game two was very close. He displayed with a hazoret that he exiled with vraska's contempt. He copied it with scarab god then used hazoret ability to discard a hostage taker. I've been up along time and his slow play had me out of focus so I began scooping only to have someone point out his bad plays. Caused quite a issue so we ended up drawing the match without us having a judge present. Moral of the store is don't play magic sleepy >.>

why are you mainboarding lightning strike when abrade does the same thing and more for the same mana cost? Though I am sure you are a great player this is an amateur mistake

Not really the ability to hit your opponent with your removal gives you reach. I've won numerous games off a top decked lightning strike or shock. Second there are a few times were I've been stuck with abrade and another card in hand and unable to attack with hazoret.

So i went 4-0 again. I played UR enigma drake control, RDW, Sultai Energy, and Temur Energy. Both RDW and Sultai Energy beat me games one but after sideboard games went very well. Other two decks got stuck mulliganing and drawing into mana stacks. Girlfriend went 3-1 with her new mono black aggro deck losing a close match to GR Pummeler.
