Is Ashling a Teen or a Warrior Queen?

Commander / EDH

MalariaJones

I've been dying to build a voltron EDH for ages. Ashling the Pilgrim is a nice, cheap creature who both grows and wipes the board a lot, so she seems like a great choice.

We've included a ton of sources of protection from red and indestructibility to keep Ashling safe from her own ability, a bunch of shroud and hexproof to keep her safe from opponents' targeted spells and abilities, and some ways to give her lifelink, since she's dealing a ton of damage total whenever she pops.

We're running a whopping 50 lands, as well as a ton of ramp; Ashling can get very mana-hungry, especially if we haven't been able to protect her from her own ability and have had to recast her multiple times. We're also running a decent amount of artifact-based card draw to shore up red's incredible lack of repeatable card draw effects.

Our strategy is simple: Play Ashling as early as possible. Drop tons of equipment and load it onto Ashling. Whenever the board starts getting too clogged with enemy creatures, pump and pop Ashling to wipe the board. Otherwise, activate her ability twice during each turn if possible to keep her growing quickly. Rack up general damage on your opponents and eliminate them one by one. Whenever Ashling dies, recast her as soon as possible and start pumping her up and re-equipping her.

This deck has several serious weaknesses. The first is that we're playing mono-red, and thus we are basically incapable of destroying enchantments or countering spells. Chaos Warp and Nevinyrral's Disk are your outs for these threats, so don't waste them on other stuff if you can help it. Our second major weakness is related to the first: If our opponents drop an Arrest or a Faith's Fetters on Ashling, or anything else that prevents her from attacking and activating her abilities (such as Song of the Dryads), our main tool and win condition will essentially have become a potato. Other than the above enchantment-removers, the only advice I can give is to spend some mana make her explode in response, bringing her safely to the General Zone. If she's unable to destroy herself (due to protection or indestructibility), you might need to sacrifice her to High Market or zap her to hand with Erratic Portal. If the enchantment doing the deed is white, you might be able to give Ashling protection with Sword of War and Peace, at which point the white enchantment will slide off.

Good luck, and godspeed!
