You need to find room for Force of Savagery and Hunted Horror just for discarded them to the Loltroll and scavenging them even Hunted Troll could maybe even work.

All of these are subpar options for the secondary strategy of the deck. I would rather add more death's shadow than anything else. Having no way to reanimate those is a bummer too, plus I would need some Torpor Orb to cast these cards.

Golgari Grave-Troll is modern legal again. Might want to look into that.

Yeaaah, he ain't that good. Dredging is not key to this deck and I would never spent five mana to cast this guy.

What a bout 1-2 Tasigurs? they are easily castable for B if you need a creature on the board.

Boza says... #7

Tasigur is just a 4/5 really, his ability is lackluster and delve is kind of anti-synergy with all the other cards. Also, his ability costs 4 mana more than Undertaker's ability, doing essentially the same thing. I really cannot see why people are getting excited over a Hooting Mandrills , but I may be willing to give him a try.

Undertaker is a 1/1 for 2. The effect also has summoning sickness.
4/4 and 4/5 is not a huge difference, but the fact that you can play tasigur in nongreen decks is huge + his ability is stronger than you think. Getting back any nonland spell is stong. + You don't have to delve away your creatures, fetchlands will get there, thats why i suggested 1-2.

I will give him the befit of the doubt for sure, but I am unimpressed by him on paper.

It's a lot of straight black, but ever think of working in Demigod of Revenge somehow?

He is too expensive for what he does IMO, but if I ever make it JundVine, I will be sure to include him.

The scavenge mechanic is cool with Vexing Devil; another cool reason to go jund. But keeping with colors in the current deck, have you thought about Postmortem Lunge? it can get you your Death's Shadow back in a pinch. anyway, +1 from me

Including too much stuff that is not able to be cast from the grave is risky. Currently, these cards are abrupt decays and grisly salvages, which are pretty necessary. Lunge does not do enough and bringing back shadow while at a low life total is not something I am looking to do - it is too unrealible and narrow and the point of the deck is convergence - all the parts converge to same gameplan, regardless of the early game.

I do plan to include vexing devil in a Jund version of the deck.

what about Ghoultree? it becomes a very real target to scavenge quickly and not a bad top deck late game. Golgari Charm could be good sibeboard tech against token decks and gives you some options.

Taisgur, The Golden Banana is a generally better Ghoul tree, even though he exiles some lands away. Plus my creatures do not like staying in the graveyard. Charm is good SB tech, though I prefer my SB cards in the form of creatures to be able to recur.

I am really enjoying all these suggestions, definitely something I have not thought about. Keep them flowing!

If you choose the dredge route, you should make the meager investment in 4 Golgari Thugs. They are awesome, and have some utility. Also, the Golgari Grave-Troll got unbanned. Also, if you go dredge, Life from the Loam, which both dredges, and gets lands back. Warning, though. If you got full on graveyard tricks, there will be a lot of graveyard hate, as I believe that this will be the dominant theme of many decks, in the coming months. Abrupt Decay, Krosan Grip, and, if you DO go JUND, Ancient Grudge will become must haves. I tell you, the vine will see much more play now, post the banned list update. That is for sure. I am actually on the fence about making a JUND or a BUG dredge/reanimator deck, and am always interested in seeing what other people come up with. I love graveyard tricks. My current modern deck is a loam/pox, which is much less graveyard heavy, and I am still using Life from the Loam, because it is awesome.

Thanks, these are all great things to think about. I like the aggressive angle this deck can take but Smallpox is also pretty good.

I know that Verdant Catacombs are pretty expensive and hard to trade for being modern staples, BUT you DO have relatively easy access to Polluted Delta and Bloodstained Mire in the form of your / fetches. They help fix, but even more importantly they can trigger another landfall activation for Bloodghast, even at the END of your opponents turn. As someone who has played Dredgevine I can tell you people forget about your Bloodghasts in the yard on their turn a lot of the time since people are expecting you to recur them off your land for turn.

@iLikeDirt

I have been working on my fetches, I am currently up to 10 in the deck, albeit with around 9-10 total targets (4 tombs and 6 basics). Will do some updates on the deck once I have tested it in FNM today. It will work a lot better with the red splash I am planning for Vexing Devil and Faithless Looting.

iLikeDirt says... #23

If thats the case Boza I have to say that a ratio of something more like 7 fetches to 9-10 targets is far safer and prevents you from creating dead draws from lands that have no fetch targets left in the long game. I really like the red splash to Dredgevine, its the more consistent version to the BUG list I played for a little (though I liked how explosive BUG was =P). I also just noticed that you're only running one Life from the Loam and no copies of Raven's Crime? Its an AMAZING way to lock down your midrange/combo/control match ups. Thats just too good to pass on. I also have to ask why no Bloodsoaked Champions if your plan is just creatures with recursion? He may SEEM underwhelming, but he doesn't take anything to bring back except you swing with SOMETHING and pay , which you can do with multiples and it gets around counter magic.

February 13, 2015 9:53 a.m.

grumbledore says... #24

I have 12 fetches and 8 non-fetches in my modern build Cruel Moon, and I have never had an issue late game of drawing fetches I can't use. Granted, they tend to end up being mountains on account of Blood Moon... But still. I think his ratio feels safe.

February 13, 2015 10:15 a.m.

Boza says... #25

@iLikeDirt

Bloodsoaked is underwhelming, since he is not cast (does not help vengevine), but returned from the grave and if I wanted another 2 power dude with recursion and I do not think I do right now, I would run Flamewake Phoenix as he is cheaper to recur and has haste. On the raven's crime thing, I have debated which particular spell to jam in there with retrace (the other being Worm Harvest). I do like the raven's suggestion for the more grindy matches as it gives me something to do with useless fetches in the lategame.

@ scrotality

Once I go for the red splash, 10 fetches will be the minimum I will consider running. Jamming a single retrace spell in the deck is a pretty cool way to ensure they are not dead draws in the lategame.

Thanks for all the comments, I am still struggling to find some of the cards I want for this deck, but I will test it as0is in a couple of hours during the FNM and post back with results.
