Dropbear -- thanks for the explanation, that all sounds quite reasonable. I guess I just personally hate not being able to do anything turn 1 in Constructed :)

My recommendation would be to consider using Xenagos, The Reveler . His +1 is excellent for getting the mana needed to drop, say, a Xenagod, or get the monstrosity off on Stormbreath Dragon. He would synergize pretty well with Nykthos.

Why are you running Temple of Triumph ? You aren't using an white mana. Boros Reckoner doesn't count.

Your deck will be much more consistent with 3 more basic Mountain to ensure that you don't clog your hand with enters-tapped lands.

NobodyPicksBulbasaur thats for the scry. If you would put aside time to have a look at some pro decklists, its a very common strategy in midrange decks. You can afford to wait a turn for mana in midrange, and the scry is invaluable.

A good site to check out is mtgpulse.com. Youd assume since pros are doing it, theres certainly some merit in also doing it.

@NobodyPicksBulbasaur probably the same reason mono-black decks run Temples of Silence and Temples of Deceit.

Mortars are definitely nice, but I've found that Magma Jet can be really crucial in this type of build. The scry 2 means that you can keep some subpar starting hands and plays really nicely off of Burning Tree emissary turn 2. You can also play it strategically with your first strikers.

I've tried this deck mono red, and I like your inclusion of xenagod and domri, they will definitely help close the game. The biggest trouble that I have had with this kind of deck is removal heavy matchups that have been dominating standard lately (U/W control and Mono Black Devotion). But your addition of a second god and the dictate may help get around this. I have also had trouble against early hand disruption and lifebane zombie taking my reckoners, but hopefully domri will help with that. My worst experiences were definitely against MBD: if they drop a Desecration Demon then you have no choice but to race, and a follow-up Gray Merchant of Asphodel completely blanks you.

Dragon Mantle also deserves a shoutout. One of these on your first strikers or stormbreath can do some serious damage with nykthos.

This deck is a difficult match up against black devotion decks, especially those who are running the new Master of the Feast in place of Desecration Demon . I play a strong U/B devotion deck (in my profile) in which I made that change and with the success I've had with it, I expect that it will catch on. Something to keep in mind. Anyhow, I do like the deck so +1 from me

If you could put 8 fanatic of mogis in this deck, how would you fit it?

I'm saying this because i see huge potential for Twinflame! I mean copy that Fanatic man!

It is castable through burningtree, striveable to increase devotion and has a neato trick:

Copy reckoner, make them fight each other and swing for 24 against your opponent (assuming dictate is in)

@Dropbear

I see where you're coming from, but I still disagree with putting in lands just to scry in this deck. I would consider this deck much closer to MUD than to MBD, and MUD doesn't play any temples because it can't afford to have lands enter tapped.

A deck like this wants to play spells every turn of the game in order to maximize its devotion. To facilitate that, you need to minimize the chances of having an opening hand containing multiple temples. If you feel that Scry is really that important, try running some copies of Magma Jet . You still get the Scry while catering to your aggressive strategy.

I like this deck idea. This can probably make it far into a SCG open after honing.

I actually agree with running the temples. This deck isn't the fastest aggressive deck and it doesn't run one-drops; the temples make sense because they're the only one-drops this deck runs.

The scry effect is much more powerful than it seems. It puts you one card ahead when you need to be one card ahead.

What he said.

I don't know why I'm the first to say this but I don't think I like Anger of the Gods in this deck. I can see it in some situations but I feel like it exiles all of your creatures but Dragon and Weird. I would turn at least two of them into Skullcrack because I feel like Grey Merchant and Sphinx's Revelation completely bust you.

Yah, Skullcrack would be GREAT here, no doubt. I kinda agree on Anger -- but it definitely has a place in the 'board if not the main. Might still be worth having as a 1-of in the main, but probably not.

Those temples are not in there for mana fixing, hence there's no point replacing them with mana fixing. Jussayin Jdvanliew

I actually think that Mutavault is stronger than Temple of Triumph . It feels like one of the major problem this deck may have is lack of pressure or board presence post wrath. Mutavault not only provides some much needed post wrath pressure, but also allows for early Aggro draws. Don't get me wrong, scry is great, but Mutavault is better.

Good luck! Cheers!

All the mana costs for my creatures are mostly double red if not triple red. This makes running colourless mana suicide. Simply running 4 colourless mana sources over 3 ruins this deck, so there is no way I'd swap out anything for a mutavault. Playing against control, you should always hold back, you never empty your hand against a deck that plays blue and white together. Hence, post wrath there is always something new for you to chuck on the board. Don't think of magic as a 'how fast can I bet my opponent' game, a lot of the time a game of magic can become a game of poker. You just have to play the deck right, and play your opponent right.
