Sideboard

A budget (~$50) Rakdos pirate list. A fairly simple deck focused on building up a small mass of pirates and hitting for lethal with the help of Dire Fleet Neckbreaker or Buccaneer's Bravado. It probably won't be winning you any GPs, but it's a fun list that can pull off turn 4 wins with a little luck.

All suggestions and critiques are welcome!

  • Daring Buccaneer a turn one drop that gets a pirate on the board and can fuel Fell Flagship later on.
  • Rigging Runner a turn one drop that gets a pirate on the board and can fuel Fell Flagship later on.
  • Dire Fleet Poisoner serves as a nice combat trick on a stick, and can combo nicely with Fathom Fleet Captain.
  • Fathom Fleet Captain a late-game mana dump that can keep churning out more pirates for us.
  • Kari Zev, Skyship Raider is a powerhouse card for that can chip in some significant damage, but is legendary and can't crew Fell Flagship, limiting how many we want to run.
  • Kitesail Freebooter is a fantastic value engine against opponents packing non-creature spells, but is unable to crew Fell Flagship and is significantly worse against creature strategies.
  • Ruin Raider helps us keep grinding out pirates into the mid and late game.
  • Dire Fleet Neckbreaker will often end the game the turn it comes down.
  • Claim / Fame can bring back most of our pirates against a removal-laden opponent, and works as a pump spell from the graveyard.
  • Lightning Strike is there to knock away some of our opponent's blockers or chip in those last few points of damage in a stalled board state.
  • Buccaneer's Bravado can come down on an unblocked pirate and win the game for us.
  • Fell Flagship is a surprisingly strong card in this deck (being able to crew it with summoning sick 1 and 2-drops really helps our speed).

Updates Add

Since all of our Pirates have rotated out of standard with the sunset of Ixalan, I've updated the deck to a new format - the aptly-named Pioneer! I've decided to stay true to the deck's origin and maintain it as a super-budget option (~$50) rather than dump a bunch of money into it, hopefully continuing to give new players an easy, cheap, and fun way to hop into Magic!
