@dieing25 Just swap out Phyrexian Obliterator (s) with Vampire Nighthawk OR Phyrexian Crusader OR Lifebane Zombie

Swap out Thoughtseize with Raven's Crime

and swap out Phyrexian Arena with Underworld Connections

And I don't know why Liliana of the Veil was in there, Because even I can't afford that shit lol.

And that should make things nice and cheap for you.

Instead of Victim of Night , why not Go for the Throat ?

Nice build, yo! I dig.

Have you considered Hero's Downfall for sideboard? I'm increasingly becoming a fan of it. Sure, it's one more mana, but being able to take out Lili or Karn is just extra special :D

scrotality I knew i was missing something for sure. Thank you so much dude lol.

And thanks. I've always liked mono-black because i think it is the only color that can pull it off and hold it's own against some pretty heafty decks out there, so I'll see how this fares once it's complete lol.

Hey no prob man! Seems like a strong build. Are there many Tron decks in your meta? If so you might want to sideboard some land kill to bork their urzas lol

September 1, 2014 1:27 p.m.

Caligula says... #8

Nah, Fortunately tron is pretty much non existent at my meta (Thank god)

Everyone seems to like the quirky builds like dredge, Twin/kiki, and pod, Lots of naya aggro too, So I'd have to SB out things like Wrench Mind and the likes.

Smiters suck.

It's nothin'. ; )

Hero's Downfall is bad in modern as far as my experience goes. It's too slow for what you want it to do. Use Dismember instead. Also, you may want to update your description.

Also, what does your meta consists of in specific, and of how much of each deck is there?

Love this. Mono-Black is my favorite play style to be honest. And their are so many options available to us as players in the modern meta. Have you considered Hex Parasite for Lili and Karn hate? I love Massacre Wurm in this deck. And if you could get a hand on 2 of her. I'd replace 2 Wrench Mind 's with Liliana of the Veil . Or perhaps even Liliana Vess so you can tutor what you need.

Scytec, I really like that Hex Parasite . I will definitely get my hands on a couple of those.. Lili on the other hand... I'm just praying for a reprint.

Vess could definitely work in here as well

Ya. I don't see veil coming back anytime soon. But I was really hoping to see a new Lili soon. The same three is making me sad. Haha. Though I am glad to see a new Sorin. Hex Parasite is pretty awesome. It has saved me countless times online. Unfortunately that is the only way I can afford to play modern. Haha.

Switched up Nyxathid for bloodghast, works well with pack rat. What do you think?

Song really ties it together! Pretty fun to find music that goes with your decks!

It looks like you could use a few more things to do on turn 1. I can't imagine you'd want more than 1 Phyrexian Arena out at once (as black cannot get rid of it easily), so maybe go down to 2 arenas and 2 Victim of Night in order to have a pair of Inquisition of Kozilek ? Maybe move the Damnation to the SB and up that count to 3, since seeing their hand and preventing their wincon/disruption from happening on time turn 1 is pretty good. It would make the turn 2 rat able to stick better and win, or at least you know what's coming. You can take out whatever you want though, I just feel like more targeted discard is better vs control and other decktypes in modern, plus your 2-drop slot is pretty full. Maybe just switching out IoKs or Duress with the set of Wrench Mind could work too, since I think your goal is just to get to the midgame as opposed to winning via hand discard like an 8-rack deck does. I really like the deck though! +1

Markbass What! Frank is a boss!

I actually enjoy suffocation quite a bit, seen them in Calgary, one of the best live shows I've been too

@KeenAdam totally missed this comment. Thanks man, i found it to be quite fitting as well =)

maybe 2 arena and add Waste Not it has ups because of your hand hate plan. It will give you mana to cast another wrench or draw you a card no life loss or make you a 2/2 or best case all of that x2.

September 4, 2014 12:58 p.m.

I'm curious, being a mono-black deck in modern, I expected to see some Liliana of the Veil . I'm just wondering why you didn't add her when she is usually an auto include for black decks.

September 5, 2014 11:39 a.m.

Caligula says... #22

CallMeCrazySam it's just the fact that I don't own lili that stops her from going in here =P

I might try out Liliana Vess

September 5, 2014 12:14 p.m.

Lol okay, that saves me from thinking that you are crazy. I think Liliana Vess is a bit too expensive mana-wise, but by all means, try her out. What about Vampire Hexmage in the board? It's great against Tron if you have not gotten rid of their Karn Liberated yet, and with your card advantage trading 1:1 is a great idea, and it's also great against opposing Liliana of the Veil s or just other Planeswalkers people may play with. As for Inquisition of Kozilek , it is such a great card in modern seeing as most decks run lower cost but effective spells (maybe not some combo decks, green devotion, or Tron) so the Inquisition of Kozilek may turn into a Thoughtseize without the loss of life. Don't get me wrong, Thoughtseize is great, I just think both should be in here. For the guy up above suggesting Waste Not , Waste Not isn't that great unless you are running a dedicated discard package like in 8 rack. Granted it is great with Thoughtseize and Wrench Mind , I just don't think their is enough discard to make full use of it.

September 5, 2014 12:25 p.m.

Caligula says... #24

Yeah Waste Not is pretty lackluster. But you are right, I do see how Inquisition of Kozilek could work out in here. I will get my hands on a couple and make some room for them.

Also, Vampire Hexmage looks like an SB option for sure.

Thanks for the recommendations.

September 5, 2014 12:35 p.m.

Since I can't edit

With Vampire Hexmage , just imagine playing against Tron and dropping this guy on turn 2. If you opponent was able to hit the lands for a turn 3 Karn Liberated then he/she faces a tough choice. Do they drop the Karn Liberated and exile one permanent or eat a card out of your hand before he is eaten by Vampire Hexmage or do they try and tough it out while he sits there and adds two to your devotion count? He'll most likely drop it, which is what you would usually want anyway, and you trade a two drop for a seven drop that is vital to their deck performance. Or you can just Hero's Downfall it. The only advantage Vampire Hexmage has to the Hero's Downfall is the devotion count but at the same time it cannot hit creatures. I suppose it just depends on what you would want or what is happening in your meta. As for the Damnation , I'm wondering why you are running a board wipe in a creature heavy deck, and it is just a one of, no more in the side. I guess you could use it if you are behind, but if you are generally behind you probably want to rethink your deck as a whole. As for Torpor Orb , if you have it out you are effectively silencing three of your creatures: Massacre Wurm , Geralf's Messenger , and Gray Merchant of Asphodel . I'm not sure how your deck fairs so you might need the Torpor Orb against the Pod decks or against Twin, but it might hurt you more than it would help. If I had this deck I would try and find room for Inquisition of Kozilek (maybe in place of Wrench Mind , even though it hits two cards for one, I feel that you choosing what to toss is better than your opponent) and put two more Surgical Extraction s in the board in place of the Torpor Orb s. But, your deck should be your own and the flavor should be something you like. Either way, I like the deck, I've always wanted to try mono black devotion in modern and my list would be a lot like yours and instead of building mono black I just went and built mono green.
