Red/Green Land Destruction

Modern Land Destruction RG (Gruul)

Couls

Sideboard

RAMP CARDS :

  • Ramp comes in the form of Arbor Elf and Utopia Sprawl. With the right draw, I can fire off a destruction spell on turn 2.
  • T1: Forest -> Arbor Elf
  • T2: Forest/Crag -> Utopia Sprawl on untapped Forest -> 4 Mana.

DESTRUCTION CARDS :

  • Wreak Havoc is great since it cannot be countered, and can deal with artifacts.
  • Reclaiming Vines is also in there for artifact/enchantments if needed... but primary focus is taking out lands.
  • Mwonvuli Acid-Moss is a great to support both the destruction and ramp aspect.
  • Stone Rain is a staple, and usually able to be cast on turn 2.
  • Molten Rain for extra damage
  • Roiling Terrain is one of the primary damage sources.

CREATURES :

  • Burning-Tree Emissary is a freebie to get an attacker/blocker out. Plus it can help exchange mana in a pinch.
  • Vexing Shusher helps against counterspells. Can sideboard with the Emissary if not playing against blue.
  • Deus of Calamity primary damage source, and fits the land destruct theme. Can get him out turn 3 with the right draw.
  • Detritivore is interesting. Lots of non-basics in Modern. Can serve as a uncounterable way of knocking out non-basic lands, which eventually turns into a damage source late game. Can sideboard with the Emmissary if opponent doesn't play non-basics.

PLAINSWALKER :

  • Chandra, the Firebrand +1 for getting rid of small creatures or plinking the enemy. -2 for doubling your destruction spells. Can get her out turn 2 with the right draw... Works great with Wreak Havoc.
  • Nissa, Sage Animist Early 2/2 Creature to Ramp, +1 for card draw, -2 for 4/4 Creature, -7 for alternate wincon.

SUPPORT CARDS :

  • Firespout board wipe against agro
  • Harmonize for card draw
  • Vines of Vastwood to protect your Shusher or Deus. The kicker also works great with Dues trample ability to knock out a land.

LAND BASE :

  • Forest - Needed for Utopia Sprawl
  • Mountain
  • Rootbound Crag - Cheap dual land option.

I play tested with the Fetch/Shock lands and it definitely helped due to the deck thinning... but it adds $120 in cost, which was out of my budget.

SIDE BOARD :

Any help, pointers or comments would be appreciated... Looking for ideas on how to accelerate to get the upper hand, make the deck more consistent, or point out any weaknesses.... or whatever else may be on your mind. Thanks.
