Mardu (RWB) has always been my favorite color combination. When Queen Marchesa was spoiled, I immediately loved her, because of her unique take on Mardu. Normally, Mardu is very aggressive and chock full of removal. Marchesa still likes the removal bit, but prefers to hang back and protect herself, until she can finish her opponents quickly with an army of tokens.

  • Removed Custodi Lich and Knights of the Black Rose With Marchesa as my commander, I can ensure that I am the monarch about 90% of the time. That level of certainty allows me to play "monarch matters" cards for the benefits. However, I had to cut these two. The Knights just weren't effective; just draining my opponents for 2 life if they stole the monarch. Snore The Lich was better, but its second ability triggers when I BECOME the monarch. If I play it when I'm already the monarch, which is often, it's just a 4/2 for 5 mana. Ouch.
  • Added Harsh Mentor While this card hasn't been the powerhouse in Modern and Legacy as once speculated, it's actually surprisingly effective in EDH. His ability is perfect against any combos that rely on activated abilities. Even if they would gain infinite life, the Mentor's ability triggers first!
  • Added Mathas, Fiend Seekerfoil Far from a powerhouse, the flavor of this guy is unreal! The queen enlists the help of a bounty hunter to help take out some of her rivals! His ability is unique and is more evidence that Mardu might just be one of the most political color combinations in EDH.
  • Removed Selfless Squire and added Teferi's Protection The Squire proved to be underwhelming. It would just sit in my hand, even if I took damage, because I always felt like there might be a better opportunity. The protection is stupidly good! A staple in white EDH immediately! This deck is all about protecting the queen (and me) and this one spell does just that to an absurd degree!
  • Removed Open the Vaults Since this deck relies on a lot of enchantments for protection, having a spell that put them directly on the battlefield from the graveyard seemed great! However, the fact that it did the same for my opponents is why I'm cutting this. There were many times when casting this helped them more than it helped me. (P.S. When I have the money, I'm adding Replenish instead.)
  • Added Tragic Arrogance This card is one of the latest to provide a Cataclysm *list* kind of effect, but it sets itself apart in a critical way. Normally, each player chooses what they get to keep, but Tragic Arrogance lets ME be the one to decide, leaving my opponents with their worst permanents and me with my best.
  • Removed Archetype of Courage The Archetype made the deck because A) it was an enchantment which helped Sphere of Safety and Open the Vaults and B) it gave my tokens a little extra value in combat, helping them survive, especially Marchesa and her Assassin tokens. (Deathtouch + first strike is a great combo!) However, giving a 1/1 first strike rarely does enough to keep it around.
  • Added Alms Collector Wow! It may not be as dumb as Teferi's Protection, but it's close! People hate on white and red in EDH because of their lack of card draw. Apparently, white's answer is: "I don't need my card draw. I'll just share yours." The Collector can definitely be abused but not really in this deck. It's mainly just to lock my opponents out of digging for answers and slowing them down so I can finish them off!
