Nice updates! Would you consider putting at least 1x Pithing Needle in the sideboard? I know I took a Maze's End turbo fog to FNM this week and was able to take first because no one had the land hate, or a way to stop the maze.

@Unforgivn_II:

I'll look into getting a couple at my LGS, certainly not buying them as I hate them so very much. Rather play with guildgates, I have guildgates. Simply not keen on them, but I guess it wouldnt hurt to test them out given I can find them in someone's trades folder.

The list didn't take that long... :D

@thePESSIMIST:

Any more high costing cards and I'll have to give up all pretense of this being a fast deck! I prefer Domri Rade for drawing creatures as he comes in quicker.

@willsm87:

If I ever have trouble against such decks, I'll be sure to dig one out of my binder. Until then I best see what my meta looks like this year first.

Probably take this to an FNM in three weeks, if the cards can be assembled. Will have to wait for delivery on some.

Xenagos, God of Revels is amazing in this deck. I have added him to my deck in my BOTG update. Check it out, Jund Standard (1st @ fnm x2 if anyone cares) I need some help figuring out my sideboard. Also, I think that two is a small number for Slaughter Games . It seems like you wouldn't draw it enough to have it matter.

I drew both once playing against control and removed both elspeth and aetherling Epicbatman. I lost that match due to time out, 25 minutes later.

Funny game, well more boring than funny anyway, yes xenagos is cooool.

Ironically all four of my Mistcutter Hydra 's were stuck at the bottom of the deck, if I had drew into just one of them....

Hi Schuesseled,

I really like how you always stick with your deck, kudos for that. I'm following it since the very beginning. I really like the more midrangey approach you take now.

However I'm curious how good Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx really is in this deck? I mean you do run many sources of devotion, but you seem to miss a way to refill your hand quickly. One of the reasons why the G/R devotion deck can utilize it's massive mana is Garruk, Caller of Beasts constantly filling their hand. Also I fear, that running out multiple BTEs opens you very vulnerable to the new awesome Bile Blight . Poof, mana gone, board gone, hand gone. I don't think that devotion is the right approach for creature based decks anymore. I can be wrong on this one though.

Another thing: I see you run 3 Ogre Battledriver , but doesn't Xenagos, God of Revels make him redundant? I'd rather play 3 Xenagos, cut the Ogre completely and add 2 more Domri Rade as he's the bread and butter for G/R/X monsters type of decks. Xenagos basically has the same function, he doesn't speed up every guy you play each turn, but +X/+X is way stronger than +2/+0 imho. Let me hear what your thoughts are on this matter, I'm really curious.

I'm going to at least take this current build to FNM at least once. I can't afford those card recommendations, pretty much at my limit with investments into this deck :P.

So domri will have to stay at 2 and xenagos badass that he is will too as well unless his price goes down.

I think Ogre Battledriver could do well, he's not as strong a card as xenagos, but keep in mind he gives xenagos haste, can give multiple creature drops haste, which can happen even with limited hand re-fillers.

But he's only a recent addition, i'm not sure how he'll play out Flame-Wreathed Pheonix or Polukranos, World Eater might take his spot.

Oh and with both the Ogre Battledriver and Xenagos, God of Revels out, any top deck is pure value. Swinging with a 6/4 Elvish Mystic . Yes please!

Putrefy says... #9

That's one thing you cannot like about magic: it's expensive :(

I see your reasoning behing Ogre Battledriver and Xenagos, God of Revels , never really thought about both of them interacting with other creatures.. That's actually pretty insane!

I hope you can keep your deck competitive even with limited funds.

I just purchased 3 Flame-Wreathed Pheonix on a whim Putrefy. I think there's a good chance that one could go up, so even if I don't want to use him, then I can sell it later.

This deck looks sweet. I really like the interactions between Kalonian Hydra and Xenagos, God of Revels .

Me too McFuzwuffers. I'll be adding FNM reports detailing how i get on at FNM every fortnight, starting hopefully on the 14th of feb maybe the 28th.

If you are interested in reading how I get on, hit subscribe down at the bottom of the page.

P.S You have a cool name.

The good thing about the interaction between Xenagos, God of Revels and Kalonian Hydra is that they are both epically strong cards on their own.

I hate Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx in three color decks, limited ramp and worthless against control decks. Along the same lines I prefer Manaweft Sliver or Voyaging Satyr to Elvish Mystic ( I actually prefer Sylvan Caryatid but you have made your feelings on that quite clear :P). I'd rather have the right fixing that the turn one green only dork. When I ran a similar build, I ran into mana issues quite a bit. I'd also really like to see a 3rd Domri Rade here if you have one. It seems too critical in terms of card advantage to be a 2 of. Have you tried Purphoros, God of the Forge , it seems like a good way to get the last couple points of damage through against a locked board, where as Xenagos, God of Revels seems like a "win more" card. But I of course love the idea and the deck, and like how you have incorperated the latest set.

@ armedpp Xenagos, God of Revels is anything but a win-more card. It's a threat that can only be answered by Detention Sphere or Fade into Antiquity (is this card even played?!) or Deglamer . It turns every creature you play into an immediate threat. Stormbreath Dragon off the top - sure 8 to your face! Kalonian Hydra off the top - 12 to you, Sir.

Just imagine having Xenagos, God of Revels , Domri Rade and Xenagos, The Reveler in play! Any creature with G/R mana-symbol turns on Xenagos and suddenly you beat them with a 6/5 indestructible guy!

With Xenagos you can kill out of no-where. Much like Ajani, Caller of the Pride . Any stalled board-state will quickly change when you put the Godly Xenagos into play, because it has an effect the turn you play it and a huge effect, that is!

"EOT bestow my Boon Satyr on Stormbreath Dragon , untap, play Xenagos, God of Revels , attack with Stormbreath Dragon , 16 to your face. GG."

Schuesseled says... #16

Yes, also Xenagos, God of Revels will be far easier to get devotion for than purphoros. He's sexy.

The shrine's only ever need to get me a little red or green mana, seriously anymore than 3, I'm probably not gonna need it. What there here for isn't insane ramp but colour fixing, three forests and a stormbreath dragon, no problem just tap add four red and 1 green because of the two BTE's in play.

@ Schuesseled Please do, I would love to see how this deck performs at FNM.

Im way ahead of you. Already subscribed.

And Xenagos, God of Revels , is VERY sexy.

It's very hard to deal with three colors Sylvan Caryatid

February 2, 2014 4:27 p.m.

Schuesseled says... #20

@dadadart Not really, I only have a splash of black for removal and Dreg Mangler , every black land is also red or green. And for my sideboard cards as well of course. I can't justify main boarding a wall to make it easier to cast spells that won't be in my deck 90% of the time.

Kornex2000 says... #21

I would suggest less 5 drops, maybe you could take some out to put in some Domri Rade or Xenagos, The Reveler

February 2, 2014 6:35 p.m.

Schuesseled says... #22

Yeah been thinking along the same lines. Plans are in the works to replace. Kalonian hydra and dreg mangler for 1 domri rafe 2 boon satyr and 3 anger of thw gods Kornex2000

February 2, 2014 6:55 p.m.

I like your deck a lot compared to mine. I did not think about Fanatic of Xenagos , which i may add to my deck. Kalonian Hydra is amazing because it can take the victory alone. it does have trample, but i dont know that i can spare the speed. i do own two, so i may flirt with the idea. I agreatly appreciate you linking your deck.

Schuesseled says... #24

@xTCBxNightmare Your welcome, although i do like Kalonian Hydra i've had to cut him from my deck to make room for Xenagos, God of Revels . Stormbreath Dragon had to stay too, as he destroys control. (and has haste).

I've been experimenting with combo's to try and give Kalonian Hydra haste, but i've come to the conclusion that I'm just better off running something else. Not that he isn't a strong creature, he's fantastic and I can't believe some mono-green decks would run Arbor Colossus over him.

the black is only for abrupt decay and putrefy so is it really worth the splash for black. Its always nice to have removal but is it really worth the headaches of not having red or green and having black lands. Just food for thought.
