Deck Tech
Hello, and welcome to Deck Tech. Here is where I am going to explain each cards worth in this deck, and whether or not it's position is in consideration. Without further ado, here is Deck Tech!
Wow this is a relic of me as an impressionable young magic player. What an interesting primer.
Creatures
First up are creatures. In a midrange deck, creatures are often the most important part, as you always want to get big ones out as fast as possible. Ramp creatures make this possible.
Atarka, World Render
: This guy is AMAZING!! 6/4, gives dragons double strike, and then, combined with a 1CMC
Titan's Strength
, you can destroy, especially with the trample.
Courser of Kruphix
: Let's me see wahat I am going to get, and allows me to get lands off the top of my deck.
Elvish Mystic
: Mana ramp in a midrange. Also chump block.
Arbor Colossus
: Has reach for all those dragons flying around, and also a pretty good monstrous.
Genesis Hydra
: A nice 2-for-1, and also a great manasink. Shout out to Reaper771 for the suggestion.
Polukranos, World Eater
: 5/5 for four, and has Monstrosity as a late-game mana sink.
Shaman of the Great Hunt
: Awesome 4/2 that buffs all your guys as they deal damage to players, and also a good card-draw engine.
Stormbreath Dragon
: Awesome 4/4, has pro white, and combos amazingly with
Atarka, World Render
.
Sylvan Caryatid
: Add whichever color of mana you need the most.
Xenagos, God of Revels
: Good for giving haste to
Atarka, World Render
, and making him do tons of damage.
Instant
Now on to the instants. Instants in this deck serve two purposes; Burn and Buff. If you have any ideas that would make this deck better, please suggest them!
Lightning Strike
: Burn spell, Kills
Sylvan Caryatid
and
Goblin Rabblemaster
.
Temur Battle Rage
: This spell adds double strike to any of your creatures! At instant speed!
Titan's Strength
: +3/+1 and scry.
Land
I am not very good at crafting manabases for decks, so this is the place I am willing to change second to most, only after the sideboard. It really does need help, and any at all is very much appreciated.
Temple of Abandon
: Scry land, keeps your lands right. Also helps topdeck.
Wooded Foothills
: FETCHLAND!!!!!
Enchantments
It almost isn't worth doing a section on enchantments, as there is only one, but I'll do one anyways. Enchantments are definitely my weak point, and all suggestions are welcome.
Frontier Siege
: Almost always used for ramp, as there aren't too many flyers in this deck.
Planeswalkers
Planeswalkers are very powerful wincons, I definitely need help here.
Xenagos, the Reveler
: Ramp, hasty satyrs, and a boss ultimate in midrange, this guy is great, as long as you can protect him.
Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
: Really awesome dude, great in a midrange and just works as a wincon in midrange with all our big dudes coming out. Another shout out to Reaper771 for the suggestion.
Sideboard
This is definitely the place I am most willing to change. The point of this sideboard is to change from midrange to aggro on a dime. I'm trying to include aggro-friendly creatures and spells to replace the likes of
Atarka, World Render
,
Stormbreath Dragon
, and
Polukranos, World Eater
. All suggestions welcome.
Goblin Rabblemaster
: Sideboard = Aggro. Aggro = Rabblemaster. Comes in for
Genesis Hydra
,
Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
, and one copy of
Atarka, World Render
.
Boon Satyr
: Amazing 3CMC for a 4/2, and also has flash for some handy End of Turn plays. Also has bestow to make those creatures bigger! Swaps in for the other copy of
Atarka, World Render
and
Dragon-Style Twins
.
Fanatic of Xenagos
: Fast 3 damage, and if tribute is payed or not, still a problem. Swaps in for
Sylvan Caryatid
and one
Temple of Abandon
.
Courser of Kruphix
: Also make a 4-of. Comes in for
Elvish Mystic
.
Stoke the Flames
: Awesome burn spell that can be convoked, and with Rabblemaster that's easy. Comes in for whatever you want.
Bassara Tower Archer
: Fast 2/1 with hexproof and reach, would like some suggestions for an alternate flying blocker. Comes in for
Arbor Colossus
.
Conclusion
Well there you have it! My Gruul deck, all layed out. Hope you enjoyed!
