Mainly description The mainly idea is to build a mill deck able to win fast, very difficoult for any mill deck. Usually the biggest problem of mill decks is that they are slow, very slow. So my deck bases its strategy on the benefits of mill, using easy but strong combos. There are many chances that I'm 5-20 during a turn and winning 5-0 the next turn: this can be possible using
Consuming Aberration
and
Artful Dodge
(who has an awesome flashback ability), but if I can't draw
Consuming Aberration
,
Wight of Precinct Six
is very useful, and cand do both defense and attack. My deck exploits
Visions of Beyond
and
Thought Scour
ability in order to give me an awesome draw advantage, useful in every situation. That's why I put on many mill cards (16 +
Thought Scour
),
Visions of Beyond
will increase my chances to draw a
Consuming Aberration
or a
Wight of Precinct Six
.Sideboard is useful in order to defense me with dangerous decks, like burns, tokens, and Eldrazi: 4x
Extirpate
and 4x
Surgical Extraction
are very useful with mill decks.
How it works

|
Early turns: I've got many ways to play at the beginning of the match: the best one is to play on the first turn a
Jace's Phantasm
, and in the second one one
Glimpse the Unthinkable
. Another great chance is to combo
Breaking
and
Hedron Crab
and a
Jace's Phantasm
. If I'm not lucky I will probably draw many milling source, so I can strengthen
Visions of Beyond
and be sure to draw an useful creature while milling with
Glimpse the Unthinkable
and/or
Mind Funeral
. Another nice creature that I can cast during early turns is
Hedron Crab
: if I've got 2 on the battlefield in the 2nd 3rd turn I can mill 6 card per turn.
During the match: If I'm not luck and I can't draw a
Jace's Phantasm
,
Wight of Precinct Six
will defense me this way, because when I cast it (2-3rd turn) I'm almost sure it is a 3/3 - 4/4, a very nice defense (it can do almost
Fog Bank
's work).
Visions of Beyond
helps me very much in order to find what I need, and I'm sure I will have my milling source during early turns. If during my first match I see that I can't defense myself there are many useful card in the sideboard. The most important spell during 4th-8th turns is vision of beyond. Anyway, I can lose something like 5-6 point, I can easilly recover my opponent in subsequent rounds.
During the defense I can mill my opponent's deck using
Breaking
,
Maddening Cacophony
,
Glimpse the Unthinkable
and mostly with
Mind Funeral
. But if I can play one
Jace's Phantasm
and I have in my hand
Glimpse the Unthinkable
/
Breaking
-
Ruin Crab
s that is perfect, I potentially have a 5/5 flying that can attack during turn 2.
How I win: My mill deck aims to win in less than 7/8 turns if I haven't many dangers. Usually the best way to win is to use
Consuming Aberration
and
Artful Dodge
, but I can win also using
Wight of Precinct Six
and
Artful Dodge
's flashback. If I've got the creature but no
Artful Dodge
I can... mill myself!, in order to use the flashback ability.
Anyway, my deck has many and many mill cards (16 powerful sorceries and 4
Hedron Crab
), I can win in 7-8 turns with my milling sources.
But there is also an opponent: so, if no one can win the match I defend myself using
Silent Arbiter
and my "mill" counters,(very useful
Extirpate
this way) waiting for (or milling for)
Artful Dodge
and
Consuming Aberration
. So i can wait my milling source.
"Order and no luck": Absolutely the most important thing in mill deck: there are too many strong/medium cards, and combine them together is very very very difficoult. It is impossible think to defeat the opponent just using "mill sources", you have to think to some alternatives: you can do that with a lot of order, and you must not need luck in order to win , every hand should be the ideal hand. For example, I can't combine
Avatar of Woe
in this kind of milling deck, because I can't be sure that the opponent will have more than ten creatures in his deck. Absolutely necessary think to that.
"Mill myself": In this deck I can also use an "automill" strategy, as Golgari's decks do: this is useful in order to draw
Artful Dodge
(considering that I'm pretty sure to have a
Wight of Precinct Six
or a
Consuming Aberration
in my hand or in the battlefield), then use its flashback ability. At the moment there are two cards that don't allow me to mill myself: one is
Mind Funeral
, the other one is
Mind Sculpt
(
Glimpse the Unthinkable
,
Hedron Crab
s and
Breaking
can do that);
Mind Funeral
is unreplacable.
The sideboard
"Undead" decks and similar - Grafdigger's cage: This kind of milling deck is very disadvantaged with undead or golgari decks, for example the ability unearth is very dangerous, as creatures like
Gravecrawler
are. With these deck I must mill not so much (15 cards maximum) until I draw it. So
Grafdigger's Cage
can help me this way, I've got three in my sideboard (50% of chances to draw it during fifth turn): I can replace 2x
Thought Scour
, 1x
Consuming Aberration
, one
Island
. So:
In: 2x
Grafdigger's Cage
and 2x
Fabricate
Out: 1x
Island
, 2x
Thought Scour
, 1x
Consuming Aberration
"Tokens" decks - Silent arbiter : Usually a mill deck can't cast many creatures, because it should mill the deck and eventually, use the milled cards in order to strengthen a creature, but what if there are 20 tokens?
Jace's Phantasm
s and
Wight of Precinct Six
can block powerful creatures, but they can't block 20 creatures: so, I can add 3/4
Silent Arbiter
. My opponent should find difficoult attack me with one creature per turn, and I can get time in order to mill my opponent. An example is the "Selesnya's tokens" decks, who can use permanent like
Honden of Life's Web
or
Trostani, Selesnya's Voice
's "populate" ability. Another bad card for my deck is
Army of the Damned
. Some similar cards that I'm considering are
Ensnaring Bridge
,
Norn's Annex
is no longer consider. So:
In: 2x
Silent Arbiter
and 2x
Fabricate
Out: 2x
Thought Scour
, 2x
Mind Sculpt
Dangerous spells: extirpate and surgical extraction
Extirpate
and
Surgical Extraction
are absolutely awesome (and expansive) in a mill deck. An awesome combo is, during turn 2, to have 2x
Hedron Crab
s, play a swamp and cast
Surgical Extraction
. With just two points I potentially can exile a very dangerous card. And, if I put on 4x
Surgical Extraction
and 3x
Extirpate
I have lot of chances to draw it when I need it. We can say the same about combo
Extirpate
with any other mill source, very powerful! The biggest problem is how to replace 7 cards... it generally changes from match to match.
Extirpate
and
Surgical Extraction
are awesome with eldrazi/affinity decks, if I can exile
Urza's Mine
/
Urza's Tower
or something like
Mycosynth Lattice
my opponent can't play its game!
Fabricate choice 4x
Silent Arbiter
, 4x
Witchbane Orb
, 4x
Grafdigger's Cage
= 12 sideboard cards. So I decided to put on my sideboard 2x
Fabricate
, useful with both these cards. I know that this choice slows my strategy, but it is a pondered choice: this method allow me to free 4 cards in my sideboard, useful in order to put 4x
Surgical Extraction
.
"Burn" and "discarding" decks - Witchbane orb
Another problem of mill decks is that they are toooo slow, like slowpoke. This deck should bo quick enough in order to maintain the draw in the early turns with a lot of deck, but there are some burns that are very strong and quick, and it is very arduous for a mill deck to win. We can say the same for descarding spells. So I can put on 3x
Witchbane Orb
s (as usually, 50% of chances to draw it during 5th turn), who helps me to maintain the draw while milling the opponent deck. Some examples of strengh and "too" dangerous spells are
Megrim
and
Lightning Bolt
, but also
Bonfire of the Damned
. So:
In: 2x
Witchbane Orb
2x
Fabricate
Out: 1x
Hedron Crab
, 1x
Artful Dodge
, 1x
Mind Sculpt
, 1x
Swamp
What I'm searching/waiting for
"Stronger counters":
Counters. I'm not satisfied by my counters, there is not a counter that done both
Doom Blade
and
Go for the Throat
's effects except for
Death's Approach
(who doesn't make me safety) and
Murder
(who costs too much mana/swamps in early turns): the best things could be something like
Abrupt Decay
, with black/blue colors. I'm waiting for something like that in future sets, but if there are some similar spells tell me! I'm considering also
Royal Assassin
. Another nice counter is
Arcane Denial
, if Wizards of the coast will reprint that I'll put that in my deck. It's drawing ability is awesome.
