Hello, and welcome to Roon, Maximal Warrior!, Once again I will discuss the Pros, Cons, and why you should play Roon of the Hidden Realm . But once again lets discuss my history with the General.

So a long way back I use to have a Rafiq of the Many deck, it was a Voltron deck based around enchantments. It was alright but eventually I decided to take it apart, then when Commander Anthology I came out, deciding to pick it up for some of the cards in there well I was taking things out of the decks I saw Roon and decided to build him since he seemed like he could be fun! As I went about building the deck I began to love more and more about Roon and his interactions with etbs and other effects!

"Living Large is for forms like mine, call me Rhinox" - Rhinox Maximal Science Officer

Who is Roon? Well Roon of the Hidden Realm is a 5 cost 4/4 costing having Vigilance Roon has an activated ability costing and tapping Roon to Exile another target creature until the next end step.

This ability is very good it allows us to reoccur ETBs, bounce opponent's creatures at the end of their turns to lock them out of returning until the end of the next turn.

Pros:

-Effect has lots of interactions

-Can lockdown opponents hard

-Can protect valuable creatures.

Cons:

-Cannot Protect Self

-Needs a Haste Source to use ability

-Needs to setup

"man, I gotta be a miracle worker!" - Rhinox, Maximal Science Officer

Now with Roon, our gameplan is going to be to get consistent value off our ETB Triggers, eventually resulting in a lockdown across the board for our opponents. Now this deck does contain combos, but they are not the main focus and most of them only result in infinite mana.

Now Roon's effect requires him to tap, thus we will need either a Haste Source from either Hall of the Bandit Lord , Lightning Greaves , or Swiftfoot Boots . Any of these allows Roon to come out ready to start flickering some stuff, and to also swing since he has vigilance he can also get attacks off before he starts flickering.

Roon is not alone in being able to flicker things though, we have Eldrazi Displacer , Brago, King Eternal , and Deadeye Navigator each of these cards can also aid in flicking our things or in Displacer's case also Flicker our opponents things. So since we have Deadeye and Displacer we are also running Peregrine Drake for the Deadeye Navigator + Peregrine Drake combo, this also works with Displacer if a land that can produce is on the field.

Now since we are Bant() are have some pretty strong etb effects and or cards that proc off etbs. I will go over a more in depth analysis later but I instead want to focus on our ability to constantly reoccur our permanents, and spells. This can be done through either Eternal Witness for everything and Archaeomancer for Instants and Sorceries, through flickering and other abuses we can keep our removal, counters, and anything else in our hand ready to be used again, and again. Also with Roon's effect specifically we can avoid board wipes on these two cards giving them strong protection from a lot of threats.

Perplexing Chimera will eventually become our ultimate abuse target, constantly stealing spells flickering it and then continuing to do so again and again with some thing like Seedborn Muse on the field with Chimera and Roon we can flicker it every turn and take one spell from each opponent. It gets better with Deadeye or Displacer where we can be flickering constantly preventing our opponents from casting any single target removal, creature, or utility spell.

Unfortunately though, if an opponent plays a board wipe we can't really escape that and it would destroy our lock, luckily we do have Counter spells to stop that, from the classical Counterspell to the abusable Mystic Snake . Of course a Supreme Verdict or a Boseiju, Who Shelters All cast boardwipe, can't be countered but that's why we have Venser, Shaper Savant providing us a way to keep our opponents' spells in their hands. Also once Venser is out on the field he is a prime, Displacer, or Deadeye target!

Now to discuss my card choices and why I picked them!

Angel of Serenity A hefty mana cost, but with the right flickering it can be used to permanently exile a whole slew of creatures an opponent has on the board or in the graveyard.

Avenger of Zendikar Good way to build a slew of token defenders which can be used with Craterhoof Behemoth to overrun our enemies.

Derevi, Empyrial Tactician The infamous Bant Bird Wizard. Derevi is a great flicker target since it can untap, anything we want or tap down our opponents permanents. Also if it survives a turn rotation we can start using its combat damage effect to get more untaps or tap downs.

Ephara, God of the Polis Not the best way to draw cards off of creatures returning to the battlefield but not very bad. I'm actually thinking of replacing this with, Guardian Project since that's a draw every etb of a unique named creature instead of on the next upkeep.

Fiend Hunter Much like Angel of Serenity you can use Fiend Hunter to permanently exile people's creatures on the field.

Glen Elendra Archmage Amazing Flicker target allows us to always keep a one negate on us at all times if we continually flicker her when she has her -1/-1 counter on her.

Karmic Guide Constant recursion of creatures we lose, also can be used with Revillark being bounced or killed to constantly keep reoccurring.

Lavinia of the Tenth Lockdown of all cmc 4 or less permanents with constant flickering. I haven't had the most success with this card but I think its still pretty good overall at least on paper.

Mulldrifter ETB Draw two cards is pretty strong, and with flickering it just gets stronger, that's also not counting how can avoid its death from casting it for its evoke cost.

Prime Speaker Zegana More ETB draw although it bases itself off of the highest power of a creature when it enters can still be used consistently through flickering to draw us even more cards.

Reveillark Usually used in many LTB combos, Lark also has the nice clause of "Leaves the Battlefield" which means Exile, Bounce, Killed we are getting its effect off, and using it with Flickering just keeps the value train going!

Seedborn Muse Allows us to always have a Roon, Deadeye, or Displacer flicker effect active each turn and all our mana untapped to interact with our opponents!

Mimic Vat Really just a way to reoccur value gets the job done!

So how do we win with Roon? Well there are several ways.

One is through Attrition constantly ETBing lockdown creatures and swinging in with Roon or grinding the game to halt well we build up countermagic or removal.

The Second way is through heavy disruption of resources.

This can be done in a few ways, on of the big ones is having Seedborn Muse , Deadeye Navigator , or Eldrazi Displacer , and Perplexing Chimera on the field. This allows us to constantly every turn have a suite of spell stealing abilities effectively allowing us to control our opponent's turn.

We can also substitute Chimera for Woodfall Primus or Acidic Slime allowing us each turn on our opponent's upkeep to chip away at their Mana Base and Permanents until they have nothing left. This can be a little slow but with Panharnomicon out we could easily remove 2 lands, or 2 Mana Rocks at a time.

Not to mention the both of these are able to interact with Aura Shards to remove pesky artifacts and enchantments with the Chimera lock, or to get an additional Permanent removal with the Primus or Slime Lock. Also benefits from Panharnomicon as well.

The explosive way is through the Deadeye Navigator + Peregrine Drake combo(can substitute in Displacer here if you have a Colorless Producing Land). With the above combo we have infinite mana allowing us on our turn to completely annihilate our opponents' mana base with Slime or Primus, or always have a way to have infinite flickers for Chimera.

Also through these infinite flickers we can gather an immense amount of card advantage through, Soul of the Harvest , Coiling Oracle , or Prime Speaker Zegana .

Guardian Project is a Card I really believe I'm going to need as another massive draw engine.

I could also put in some dorks, and more mana rocks but through ETB abuse I tend to build up a pretty healthy basis of lands so I'm not 100% sure if I'd need much else from that.

I also think a Mass Haste source such as Concordant Crossroads or Akroma's Memorial would allow me to execute, a mass swing with Avenger of Zendikar 's tokens and Craterhoof Behemoth .

Well there you have , Roon, Maximal Warrior the deck has served me well and I really enjoy playing it! I hope you enjoyed reading this list and I hope to hear feedback and ways I can improve this deck!
