First of all, about the title. I sent my friend a text message about a deck I just built. Specifically, I typed "RUG monsters" and then my autocorrect changed it to (RUG Lobsters). Finding it too funny to change, I ran with it. Behold, the RUG lobsters and their planeswalker buddies.
So I'm attempting to mix up my 3 favorite colors. This deck was based on the standard R/G monsters deck, however, blue was splashed in.
Cyclonic Rift is one of the best reasons to splash blue in this deck. This deck can utilize it's ramp to overload the spell, allowing it to deal with threats Mizzium Mortars couldn't deal with alone.
Prophet of Kruphix
is a wonderful creature in this deck. She has great synergy with monstrous abilities, besides the obvious potential of flashing in creatures during your opponent's turn. She can even allow creature plays on your turn while allowing a Cyclonic Rift on your opponent's turn.
Kiora, the Crashing Wave. I love this card. It's absolutely fantastic against a plethora of threats. She works great alongside the other planeswalkers in this deck, so much so that during a match, I had Domri and Kiora both achieve their ultimates at the same time!
Now that you know why I splash blue, take a look at a few of the other cards.
Polukranos, World Eater. He's a premier threat in this deck, being both removal and a huge beatstick.
Stormbreath Dragon. Nothing that I can say hasn't already been said about this guy.
Elvish Mystic
,
Sylvan Caryatid
, and Courser of Kruphix are necessary additions to this deck.
Chandra, Pyromaster
is a unique and powerful planeswalker. She has a lot of applications, however, in this deck, her -0 can often win games.
Domri Rade
, Courser of Kruphix, and the various temples allow her ability to become more powerful, as they give the knowledge of what's on the top of your deck. She can also kill a variety of creatures, including the forever annoying
Lifebane Zombie
.
Domri Rade
is my favorite planeswalker of all time. He definitely earned this title, as removal, card advantage, and an awesome ultimate are quite a package in a 3 mana-cost planeswalker.
Xenagos, the Reveler
. He's good everywhere, but he shines against control and other midrange decks.
Lastly,
Ghor-Clan Rampager
. Awesome card is awesome.
Sideboard cards:
AEtherling is sideboarded against control matches. If a particularly worthy opponent manages to get you into the "topdeck mode", AEtherling will save your nerdy ass. 8 unblockable!!!
Negate is a good card against heavy control matches. It can replace the Mizzium Mortars to counter planeswalkers, removal, and sweepers.
Turn / Burn is quite the underrated card. It replaces the mortars in a lot of match-ups. It can deal with Boros Reckoner, Desecration Demon, master of the feasts... actually it would be easier to list the cards that this particular spell cannot deal with...
Mistcutter Hydra is such an amazing hate card that it needs three spots in the sideboard. Great against monoblue and various forms of control. Play it after a Supreme Verdict to punch control players in the face.
Turn / Burn is great against fatties and doubles as instant speed removal.
Prognostic Sphinx
is something I will experiment with against decks heavy with removal. I've seen good use of it against me.
Arbor Colossus
is a great card in certain situations. He's never spectacular, but he'll swat dragons, demons, and angels out of the sky.
Prime Speaker Zegana is another experiment. She has a ton of potential as well as a lot of conditions for her to meet to live up to this potential.
Progenitor Mimic is great against creature decks.
[[pithing needle] is amazing early and late game against a lot of threats.
Simic Charm is good as a trick against control decks.
Specific match-ups:
Esper Contol-
This can be tricky. I've really progressed in my ability to fight these colors, but as always, a skilled control player can gain the upper-hand. Don't unload your hand unless you want them to Supreme Verdict. Negate is your buddy here. Though it can't touch the dreaded verdict, use it against their Sphinx's Revelation, Elspeth, Sun's Champion, and Jace, Architect of Thought. If you draw into your [pithing needle]], be sure to name a planeswalker or AEtherling, depending on the circumstances. Mistcutter Hydra and AEtherling will help you here.
Aggro-
This is another tricky match-up. Use Courser of Kruphix or
Sylvan Caryatid
defensively until you can either eliminate their threats with a Mizzium Mortars or play threats of your own.
Midrange-
It all depends on the colors here, but I usually don't sideboard much. I've found that
Prophet of Kruphix
changes games if allowed to stay on the board. Cyclonic Rift can also win you the game if you stall until the overload becomes possible.
Monoblack devotion-
Stupid broken deck is broken. Turn / Burn works against demons. 6/6 flyers do not appreciate being turned into a 0/1 and then blocked by something insignificant.
Prognostic Sphinx
might be good here, I really haven't had the chance to try it. Feed Polukranos, World Eater a healthy dose of Pack Rat before it gets out of hand. Black getting rid of your creatures with excessive amounts of removal? Your guess is as good as mine.
Bant walkers-
This deck usually has the upper-hand here. Mistcutter Hydra and Stormbreath Dragon dodge a lot of removal and allow you to get past their defenses. As always, Negate their powerful spells.
