im going to change the Farseek to Nature's Lore because it is far superior. it'll bring out your duals and doesn't come in tapped. basically, with a vorinclex out it mana ramps and doesn't cost a thing(: you should make the switch too

Nature's Lore isn't in Modern, thus I can't play it in my Modern deck. If I could play it, I would, given that it is ridiculously good.

At FNM recently, I've been having a bad run, and in every game I've lost, at some point I've thought "I wish I had some spot removal". I've been recently considering adding white for Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite , and this addition of white would also give me the wonderful gift that is Path to Exile . Should I go ahead with white, and if so, what should I take out to add Path? Norn would replace Balefire Dragon .

If you do, I would take out both Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger and maybe a Garruk Wildspeaker to put in Path to Exile as., while VVoH is good, he seems like win-more, and yes, can be great for mana dumps, doesn't fit the turn. 3 fatty curve; Garruk is good, and can help in stickier situations, but spot removal I feel could be better than a chump or 2 extra mana sometimes. Thoughts?

I'm not sure. I see what you're saying about Vorinclex, and I'll consider removing him, but I'm not convinced. The amount of times he's got me out of trouble is amazing. If you look at any creature based deck, there will often be a curve topper that just wins you the game, like Hellrider in aggro. Vorinclex isn't there to be dropped on turn 3, he's there to back up whatever I drop on turn 3. He is also ridiculous in a stalemate as your opponent basically gets 1 turn every time you get 2.

Just think about how many times Garruk has kept me in a game long enough for me to drop a fatty. He makes a token, defends himself with it, then ramps into a fatty before finishing the game with an Overrun , all by himself. He's definitely staying.

So far I'm thinking

-4 Balefire Dragon
-1 Primeval Titan
-2 ???

+3 Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite
+4 Path to Exile

Fair enough, but the other 2 things have to come from somewhere... Maybe drop 1 Inferno Titan and a Garruk Wildspeaker ?

October 26, 2013 5:09 p.m.

megawurmple says... #8

Nope. As I said earlier, I'm not removing any Garruk Wildspeaker and Inferno Titan is just ridiculous for board control, as well has having good synergy with Norn. Maybe just take out 1 Bonfire of the Damned and run 3 Path to Exile .

I've played this deck against an Urzatron and became quickly stuck against Platinum Angel or things like this, you clearly need more removals.Maybe Prey Upon can be handy (using Kessig Wolf Run if needed to kill very big creatures).

lordnapalm That's another reason I want to add white so that I can run Path to Exile .

TitansFTW, yes that's a good way to get rid of those pesky biggies.

Nice deck. Quite fun.

a Garruk, Caller of Beasts would be a strong addition here also have you thought about doing defender ramp instead? Overgrown Battlement - Axebane Guardian - Sylvan Caryatid makes for serious ramp, i use them in a mono green deck. On turn four i've been able to tap for thirteen mana

Loving this deck , +1 with a small suggestion,

3 Kessig Wolf Run seems excessive, have you given any thought to Inkmoth Nexus ? You can pull the nexus and a Kessig out with Prime Time, and basically win on the next turn with a X/1 flying infect with all the mana-ramping that you do.

Maybe:

-1 Kessig Wolf Run

+1 Inkmoth Nexus

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

PooPlayer I don't run defender ramp for two reasons:

  1. It's too slow. With the ramp I have at the moment, I can consistently drop a Titan on turn 3, maybe even an Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite . While defender ramp gets you more mana on turn 4 than my current ramp, I want 6 or 7 mana on turn 3, which defender ramp can't get.
  2. My friend KrosanTusker runs defender ramp in casual (see it here, its hilarious) and I don't want to infringe on his idea.

As for Garruk, Caller of Beasts , he could be useful, but most of the time I'd rather have something else. He's harder to get to than my creatures as Somberwald Sage can't help to pay for him, he can't drop an Inferno Titan or Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite with his -3 ability, and I don't really need to dig for more creatures as this is a pretty quick deck: I normally hope for the game to be over by turn 5.

leafswish I might do just that. This deck started off very casual, which is why Inkmoth Nexus isn't here, but as it is starting to become more competitive I think I'll put a couple in.

Elliote50 Don't forget to +1 if you like the deck!

After extensive playtesting, I have discovered that Inkmoth Nexus is almost entirely superfluous in this deck. With or without it, I win consistently on turn 5, and when I hit a turn 3 Primeval Titan , I'd rather spend my mana on turn 4 ramping into a fatty, as opposed to pumping an Inkmoth Nexus . That, and I have a personal vendetta against infect. For the aforementioned reasons, I've decided to remove it.

How would you feel about Lotus Cobra or Oracle of Mul Daya . It's a shame there's no Burgeoning or Exploration allowed.

December 27, 2013 6:53 p.m.

megawurmple says... #18

Lotus Cobra would definitely be worth it if I ran Fetch Lands. However, as I don't want to spend that kind of money, I feel it isn't worth it; it can only ramp for 1 every turn, unless I have a Primeval Titan in which case I don't need extra mana. Besides, I have no use for the mana when Prime Time fetches lands for me.

Oracle of Mul Daya is a bit too slow. I can't play her before turn 3, by which point I want a card that can do more than just ramp (thus Garruk Wildspeaker ). Besides, she has the downside of letting my opponent see everything I draw.

Do you think my land count is correct? That's a question I've had trouble answering myself recently.

December 27, 2013 7:19 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #19

I'm guessing yes. It looks solid. You're basically guaranteed a T1 forest in a 7 card hand, which means Arbor Elf is going to be useful as soon as it's played (well after summoning sickness) like 99% of the time. It all seems to add up.... yeh.

December 27, 2013 7:32 p.m.

Only thing I might suggest is dropping one Kessig Wolf Run for another colored land.

Lurking Predators would put pressure on them and accelerate the deck

Dallie says... #23

I often found myself with two land openers, and I don't think that you, as a ramp deck, want that. I would suggest finding cuts (possibly 1 Arbor Elf and 1 Somberwald Sage ) for two additional lands. I would add two Sacred Foundry s in their place.

December 28, 2013 5:28 a.m.

megawurmple says... #24

PooPlayer Although Lurking Predators is a decent card, it is too slow for my liking and relies heavily on chance, which I'm not a huge fan of. I also can't ramp into it with Somberwald Sage . I'd rather just play a creature.

Dallie I agree that I could do with a bit more land, I don't think 24 is necessary. I'll probably go up to 23. The first thing I'd take out is Farseek . What do you think?

December 28, 2013 8:18 a.m.

Dallie says... #25

TitansFTW: Farseek is good because you get fixing, ramp, and it's not as easy to "counter" as eg. Arbor Elf . Farseek will also make you less likely to draw land, which kind of negates the need for more land. If you had a playset of Farseek s in there, in place of a ramp creature, I think you could do with 23-24 land (I'm biased towards 24, as I usually play control, but 23 might work just as well).
