Lorthos is in here because he's a badass, and there's plenty of mana and card advantage to support him. It sounds crazy, but he actually generally makes an appearance around turn 6. 8/8 octopi look pretty scary on turn 6, as it turns out.

hand disruption hurts this deck, but if it manages to get running, the mana is easy enough to amass, and Roil Elemental will happily take control of all your opponent's creatures if left unchecked. Quest for Ancient Secrets is actually important, because with all the cantrips and land fetching going on, it's actually pretty easy to mill yourself down to slim pickin's by turn 15 or so.
