Artifact (1)

Has your meta experienced power creep? Are combo players taking all of the fun out of magic? Are you something of a troll? Than let me introduce you to the wonderful world of Ruric Thar, the Unbowed, the breaker of competitive decks.

Overview

Ruric Thar, the Unbowed forces players to chose spells very carefully and has the ability to stop many competitive decks dead in their tracks. He’s big, he’s mean, and if someone plays a non-creature spell, he’s coming for them.

Ramp

The name of the game is to get Ruric Thar, the Unbowed out as quickly as possible. to do this we will use:

Mana Dorks

Arbor Elf, Birds of Paradise, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Llanowar Elves, Priest of Titania (remember she counts herself), Shaman of Forgotten Ways, and Sylvan Caryatid. Slot in Somberwald Sage for a great 3 mana dork.

More Sources of Mana

Play Dockside Extortionist once your opponents drop any rocks or other artifacts in the first few turns. Orcish Lumberjack lets you turn your forests into triple mana. Turn life into a resource with Treasonous Ogre. Wrenn and Six lets you lather, rinse, and repeat your fetch lands and is obscene when Exploration is on the field. Xenagos, the Reveler is a mixed mana Gaea's Cradle. Carpet of Flowers dominates if anyone is playing blue.

Stax

Collector Ouphe turns off everyones mana rocks, likewise forNull Rod. Manglehorn delays all of your opponents artifacts. Root Maze delays their artifacts and lands. Runic Armasaur gains you card advantage whenever someone cracks a fetch land. Damping Sphere stops storm players. Thorn of Amethyst is often enough of a tax to stop a combo player. Same for Trinisphere and Cindervines. Blood Moon and Magus of the Moon will screw up the mana fixing your opponents attempt. Price of Glory will make control players think twice when casting on your turn. Stranglehold stops your opponents from searching for the right answer, Possibility Storm messes up anyones plans for control.

Winning

Ruric Thar, the Unbowed is our main beat down win condition, but we can do a lot to help him out.

Craterhoof Behemoth is an excellent tutor for Finale of Devastation, and is often enough to take someone out.

Shaman of Forgotten Ways 2nd activated ability is absolutely devastating if one of your opponents don’t play many creatures and will kill them if you activate it when their board is empty.

Targeting either Zealous Conscripts or Hyrax Tower Scout with either Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker or Splinter Twin will give you an infinite number of tokens and let you swing out at everyone in a single turn.

Goblin Sharpshooter and Splinter Twin interact in a very interesting way. First have Goblin Sharpshooter on the battlefield with either haste or without summoning sickness and any other 1/1 creature under anyones control. First cast Splinter Twin on Goblin Sharpshooter. Then tap Goblin Sharpshooter #1 to make a 2nd Goblin Sharpshooter. Tap Goblin Sharpshooter #2 and ping any 1/1 creature that isn’t the original Goblin Sharpshooter, killing it, untapping both Goblin Sharpshooter’s. Tap your original Goblin Sharpshooter to make a 3rd Goblin Sharpshooter. Tap Goblin Sharpshooter #2 targeting Goblin Sharpshooter #3. In response, tap Goblin Sharpshooter #3 to deal 1 damage to any opponent. The damage will resolve, Goblin Sharpshooter #3 will die, untapping Goblin Sharpshooter # 1 and 2. This loop can be repeated to kill the entire table.
