Hey Entari0! Nice start you have here on your deck. So far it looks like a mono-black devotion list. The best card in this deck archetype is Phyrexian Obliterator; but it costs upwards of $25. If you are serious enough about this deck, condider investing in this deck becuse playing it can shift the game in your favor immediately. Some more budget suggestions include Gatekeeper of Malakir, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Dismember, and many others. Good luck with this build!

Thanks a lot jrogers16 for your suggestions, I even managed to fit in a Phyrexian Obliterator in without going over my budget. Definitely not a finished product yet, but getting there.

You're playing too much high CMC stuff. A deck with so many 5 and 6-drops (or any at all) doesn't stand a chance against any serious Modern deck. Don't pklay Archfiend of Depravity, Butcher of Malakir, Shrike Harpy, Grave Exchange and Indulgent Tormentor - hell, you shouldn't even run 4x Massacre Wurm even though it's the backbone of the deck. With your current list, you're very, very likely to start the game with a couple lands and a TON of 4+ CMC cards in hand, which would force you to play only land for 2 or 3 turns - that is, long enough to get you killed.

What you want is more utility cards to help you stay alive until you drop a Wurm on the battlefield. Hand disruption is absolutely necessary - Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, Duress, even Despise if it's the only one you can afford. Your removal suite needs improvement too - Dismember is a great card, but it requires you to pay life in order to be efficient, so don't run a full 4. Put some Victim of Night, Go for the Throat, Smother, Ultimate Price and/or Deathmark in there. None of them costs too much money, and they're all great at what black does best - killing dudes. Drown in Sorrow might help, too.

Don't play Dash Hopes. It lets your opponent choose if they want it to resolve or not, which in practice means it'll only counter useless enemy spells - if they're casting something that'll really help them beat you, they'll gladly pay the 5 life anyway. Again, what you want is stuff that keeps you alive intil turn 6, and Dash Hopes does very little to help you with that. I'd suggest Sign in Blood or Night's Whisper for card draw, or even Imp's Mischief if you really want to catch the opponent by surprise.

Finally, instead of Butcher of Malakir or Dictate of Erebos, play Grave Pact. It's cheaper to cast than both and does the same work (as well as being harder to destroy than the Butcher).

Hope this helps!

I agree with square711, you should go with cheaper stuff. Additionally, you could splash white for Athreos, God of Passage, Orzhov Charm, High Priest of Penance, etc.

If you're running mono black, then Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is always worth looking into, ESPECIALLY since a lot of the cards you run involve or more. You might want to look into some of the devotion to black cards too, like Grey Merchant of Asphodel and Erebos, God of the Dead (who, really, are the only good black devotion cards, although Marshmist Titan as a cheap creature might appeal to you?).

Since the main creatures of the deck have relatively high toughness, you might also want Languish as a board sweeper.

Let me know what you think of my suggestions :)

Meant Gray Merchant of Asphodel by the way- no idea why its linked to a deck

In theme with the punisher mechanic prevalent here, I'd say Painful Quandary over Dictate of Erebos, and for early game Black Cat is never something an opponent wants to be facing down

maybe you should cut something to put in more Phyrexian obliterators .Im a afan of Shelroded , but dont know maybe an obliteratos is better than her

AlsoLanguish for board sweeper

ummm..........Phyrexian Obliterator is far, far better than Sheoldred, Whispering One

This deck needs Malicious Affliction to handle beaters and early threats, and maybe Disciple of Bolas to speed things up a little by putting threats in your hand, and late game gaining you back some necessary life.

And as previously recommended, Languish with an on board Wurm is almost GG against aggro, eliminates creature threats control packs (you'll have to time that better, obviously) and deters midrange from playing too many creatures.

Splash a little white for some flicker effects or blue for Rite of Replication on Massacre Wurm. It's overkill to the fourth degree, but it's either they counter rite or lose 7/10 times.

try Abyssal Persecutor. with all the sac effects it likely won't kill you

Great deck idea.

I haven't read all the suggestions but since in the descriptions you say the ideal is to play Killing Wave for 4 mana I would definitely play Damnation instead.

Languish can also be a good (more on budget) choice. But if you can I would maybe play 2 of each

With Killing Wave you are giving your opponent the opption to kill only his worst creatures and keep the best ones for some extra life paying.

In my experience giving your opponent options is always a bad move.

SOOooo... I have cut Sheoldred, Whispering One in favor of another Phyrexian Obliterator. I also cut 4 swamps in favor of 2 Languish and 2 Rite of Replication. And I cut another 4 in favor of Temple of Deceit

and to Bigode00, the idea with Massacre Wurm and Killing Wave is to drop Killing Wave for 3 as the x, so the opponent looses each creature, and 2 life with it, or pays 3 life per creature. they are in a majr predicament either way.

i would suggest a couple more u/b lands, even just the check ones from innistrad, drop a couple swamps for them. otherwise you wont be able to reliably cast rite

Just so you know, cruel control means grixis (UBR) control with Cruel Ultimatum.
