How about Greater Harvester? It's pretty good :P. Jk but why flayer?

Flayer is in a lot of ways the staple of this deck. Having a consistent 4/4 with trample for 2 is great, but being able to filter what we draw is even more powerful. He helps ensure that we have the 4B necessary to cast Obliterator, and helps get the Bloodghasts from our deck into the grave which inevitably stacks devotion on our board for a devastating Gary.

Love the concept, even that expensive green bully is not here, great. I have printed the deck, and am going to test it today 4 fun :-) cant wait.

Haha right, try to avoid putting guy in my builds. Bloodghast is just a better choice in this build. I just put it all together physically last week and so far it's super sweet. You may have to make some adjustments according to the meta at your lgs but the core is there for ya

Hello there, super fun to play, love it even more! I have one idea, maybe there is no room because all of the cards are better, but i feel a lot of synergy - Deadly Allure - for the first, using it for bloodghast to take out bigger threat and than taking back ghast just by playing land looks nice, you can use like not targeting two removals if it was played from hand, it!s another card for Liliana to discard and could by used again, you can get it to grave by Grim Flayer and use it than and most important - you can target your Obliterator and wreck them no matter if they want to :-)) and it's alternative removal for threats like bogles and whatever .. maybe one copy for test could do some work :-)

Deadly Allure was actually the original reason I splashed green. Seemed super awesome with obliterator. I ended up cutting it because it was the weakest card in my deck but cutting a Thoughtseize for it would be a possibility. Certainly on flavor :)

I don't see a lot of competitive Golgari builds. I enjoy seeing less common brews in Modern; playing Jund, GR Tron, and Bant Eldrazi over and over again gets bland. Nicely done, I like this a lot.

Much appreciated DrayDray, it has taken a lot of reflecting and playtesting to get it to this stage

With all this heavy devotion, why no Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx?
January 15, 2017 9:24 p.m.
SineroKirinashi, so in previous versions I tried running Nykthos but I found that it hurt more times then it helped. It was tough getting enough black mana to cast obliterators and other spells when running both Nykthos and Arena, and there's nothing this deck really needs to ramp into. Turn 3 Obliterator is technically possible with Nykthos in this deck, but not likely and not needed. All this deck wants to do is just ride that beautiful curve to victory

Hey, cool deck have you thought about adding Lure?
January 16, 2017 3:41 a.m.
Thanks Sgt_St0n3r, while Lure is certainly on flavor with Phyrexian Obliterator it doesn't work so well with the rest of the creatures. Also, if the opponent destroys our enchanted creature they've effectively just 2 for 1'd us. Thanks for the suggestion tho!

I really like this deck. not often I look at something and think, 'I can't think of much I'd do different'. I'd probably swap Whip of Erebos for a second Phyrexian Arena in my meta, or run Asceticism in its slot. Have you considered a blacker variant with the shrine back in and Profane Command taking the place of the Gray Merchant of Asphodel? Most of that is just preference and local meta. Seriously love it.

Thanks lagotripha, glad you like the deck! I've been building mono(ish) black decks almost exclusively for about the past year. Profane Command with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is sooo awesome in decks that run heavier on the devotion theme. It's one of the most underrated command cards for sure. Unfortunately neither can effectively fit in this shell, but I am a fan. Certainly depending on your local meta there are a couple slots you could substitute cards for. In my experience, the draw filtering with Grim Flayer is usually enough, but Phyrexian Arena is almost always a welcomed sight. Whip of Erebos can go a long way in this deck. If you're not whipping back Garys or Obliterators, just spamming Bloodghast attacks every turn can be really powerful and put you back in the game if you're behind.

How has this deck been doing at your LGS with the printing of Fatal Push? Has your record been changing since then? What kind of record do you go usually each week with this build?

Excile2127, thanks! Glad you like the deck! Not sure what Pharika, God of Affliction would do for this build but Erebos, God of the Dead could be good. The issue is where she would fit and what would be replaced. Phyrexian Obliterator is the focus of this deck so I wouldn't cut one and still run Arena. I for sure do not want another Arena as it doesn't tap for mana without Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. If anything I'd find a spot for a Traverse the Ulvenwald to be able to tutor it, or another relevant threat up, but again the issue is what would get cut. Although there is just 2 cards utilizing devotion, those 2 Garys are extremely potent and close out the game on the spot so I don't feel much of a need to go beyond that. Perhaps a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx would do me some good but I can't imagine myself really cutting the Ghost Quarter in the current meta. I've just physically been able to put this build together so I'm sure it will see some tweaking the more I play it!
